» Clinton Felt “Snubbed” By Obama at SOTU from Election Geek Blog 2008 Election News 24/7 Comments (28)
Yes, Marc, you are indeed part of a much larger problem when it comes to the nature of political coverage in this country. Thanks for pointing that out.
Gee...it's good to know that the media is focusing on the issues that Americans care most about, like the economy, healthcare, Iraq, ... oh, I forgot, the public cares more about the "snub." There are soldiers dying in Iraq, which Hillary Clinton shares partial responsibility for, and the media focuses on the "snub." Many people lack adequate healthcare, but hey, who cares, there's the "snub." Many people are losing their homes, but hey, who cares...I'm sure these people would rather fixate on the "snub" whether they have a home or not. I do not care whether the snub was real or coincidence. Does it really matter? If it was real, then fine...Obama's human too, and Hillary and Bill have been taking some pretty mean shots at him, including trying to marginalize him on racial terms. When the media plays this stuff up, they lose the right to complain about any lack of seriousness or results in our political system. They lose the right to complain that Americans do not fully understand the issues, vote on only superficial reasons, or that the candidates themselves are lacking in election after election. They lose the right to complain that candidates use petty and demeaning tactics. Notice also how Hillary is using this to try to divide people once again. Now that's a big story: the fact that Hillary is a singularly divisive figure in American politics, and hence is crippled in her ability to accomplish meaningful change if she were elected.
wow, when i saw her speak, i could gag. everytime i start to think, ok, MAYBE i could vote for her, she does something that makes me think, NO WAY. it's obvious in the video, she isn't reaching out to Obama, she's reaching out to Kennedy, and it's also obvious that McCaskill is just on the other side of Ted Kennedy and of course that's who Obama is talking to. it's pretty pathetic, she's trying to use this for political gain.
Yawn. I'll check back later for something interesting.
Hillary plays the victim yet again. She always gets good mileage out of that.
Obama is a thin skinned prick. For the optics, he should have shook Clinton's hand and gave her a nice pat on the shoulder.
Hoping that Obama keeps quiet today and leaves Hillary to dominate the news tonight with her twin peaks of absurdity in snubgate and Floridian fantasy. Generally I don't have all that much faith in the judgment of people not following this as closely as I am, but I'm confident that 90% of people will see this for exactly what it is--Clinton trying to divert attention away from anything and everything of actual importance.
""Well Chris, I reached out my hand in friendship and unity, and my hand is still reaching out. And I look forward to shaking his hand when I see him at the debate in California." VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT
HIllary is trying to push "The Snub"story as the reincarnation of "the cry." This is a power play for female votes using the scorned woman tactice that has so often worked for her. Halperin, serious "journalist" that he is, has decided last night that this was the top story on "The Page," not McCain's victory, not Rudy dropping out, not even Hillary's beauty contest victory. The only person in the media who is giving this its proper context is Maureen Dowd, who gives the whole story in her Wednesday column: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/30/opinion/30dowd.html?hp The rest of the media is involved in an insidious, under the radar campaign to stop Obama's momentum with a manufactures controversey. These corporate media institutional vioces must rescue Hillary for the sake of their profits for the next 4 years that will be much higher under the circus of Billary than the unity of Obama. The Obama campaign needs to be very vigalent about what is going on. This story, however trivial it may seem, is about ten times more important than Florida in terms of what will happen super tuesday. Iflow information female voters have are fooled into thinking that Hillary is being beat up upon unfairly, we will see a repeat of NH with a huge gender triabalistic backlash. Already yesterday "the snub"was used to ignore the Sebelius endorsement. Big media wants to hide Obama's female endorsements because they are complicit in the slanderous narrative being pushed to make Hillary the beneficiary of a gender backlash by Feb 5th. People like Halperin are trying to make this about as many news cycles as possible because they don't really care to have an honest campaign about the issues, they prefer circus sideshows because they don't love their country enough to practice their jobs responsibly.
I see that John Edwards is scheduling a major speech on poverty issues in New Orleans. What's the old saying about trees falling in the forest if nobody's there? Too bad the political airtime will be focusing on matters important to the country, like the "snub." What a wasted opportunity this election bodes to be.
Noam Sheiber picks up an why this is so dangerous for Obama. A "clinton backlash" backlash: http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/01/29/a-clinton-backlash-backlash.aspx All this snub stuff is trying to reprise the conditions right before New Hampshire. Obama needs to be super gracious now that HIllary is in "victim" mode. He can't be the same as when she was in "attack" mode. He needs to watch his body language at tomorrow's debate. Give her a very warm handshake. Maybe even give her a huig for the cameras. Call John and Hillary over to lock arms and hold them above his head in a sign of unity. Right now, Obama doesn't need to score points against Hillary. He needs to outclass her. It may seem silly to have to do this, but with the media as they are, and large swaths of female voters prone to voting based on perceived slights to Hillary, he has to aggressively play nice. Many voters have short memories and the nastiness of the Clintons will be far receded from many casual Feb 5th voers memories and if women are thinking about how everybody is being mean to poor old HIllary, you could see a huge female tribalistic surge for Hillary. Obama needs to keep speaking positively to female voters. Carloline Kennedy's endorsement opens the door, but he needs to seal the deal. Keep talking about being raised by a single mom. Keep talking about women's issues. Keep saying nice things about Hillary. Be as nice to her as possible when the cameras are rolling. This is a critical time for Obama. A gender backlash at this stage could sink his campaign, but this is eactly what the Hillary campaign is trying to orchestrate.
This isn't a big deal. Nor was the "you're likable enough, Hillary" comment. But the media focus relentlessly on these petty issues, and they certainly haven't given the Clintons a pass on this type of coverage. I do wonder, though, if, moments like these do show us insight into the man's temperament and character. I've got no problem with someone's having a temper. Hillary's is supposedly legendary. So was Eisenhower's. And Truman's. And Reagan's. But you've got to keep your emotions in check in public if there's a chance the particular emotion you're about to display might hurt you. People can make cracks about Hillary's fake tears all they like. But even if they're correct -- and the tears were indeed fake -- I'd say this displays a mastery of emotion important in a leader. It's important to have a president whose not going to let his emotions get the best of him, and engage in some petty BS likely to harm our relations with this or that other power.
Yet another opportunity for Hillary's inauthenticity to shine through again. God the Clintons make me nauseous. It pisses me off that this non-event will make a difference next Tuesday, but I fear it will. It's such bullshit.
Regarding the land deal in Chicago: this is old news, which Barack Obama clearly and publicly spoke about more than one year ago: http://www.suntimes.com/news/124171,CST-NWS-obama05.article. Beware the Clinton politics of division...I agree with RKA's comments that Obama must be gracious in the debate tomorrow.
all the young guys are upset, LOL.
Ambinder missed a big story a couple days ago, and instead offers this crap. In this entry he discusses a question someone asked McCain concerning one of his staff members who's a former cabinet-level official with the MexicanGovernment. Yes, you read that right: one of John McCain's staff members - the director of his HispanicOutreach - is a dual citizen who's a former cabinet-level official with the MexicanGovernment. Why didn't Ambinder point that out in his post on the question, and why wasn't it Ambinder himself who asked the question? Here's the question; hopefully someone will ask a better version: youtube.com/watch?v=9KSzu_lgaX8
Did I really just get analysis from a "body language expert"? Her body language indicates to me that she's making this crap up as she goes along. Do you get royalties every times somebody mentions this story? Just trying to figure out what's going on.
You have got to be kidding. First, this is all old. The "snub" ranks right up there with celebrity gawking. And seriously, Obama wanted to give Hillary and Kennedy space. This is more a polite gesture than some dramatic moment. Second, I am more concerned about the media cronyism and political cronyism of McCain and his Reform Institute than Rezco.
What are we TMZ now? Reading for meaning in a blurry picture taken without the involved parties consent or knowledge? Why don't we post a picture of Brittney Spears and see if we can figure out what her psychiatric diagnosis is? This is so irritating and all the journalists who are covering this are just fanning the flames. Also, HRC is capitalizing on this moment. She reached for TED KENNEDY'S hand, NOT Obama's.
Gutter politics......
Are we really surprised to see Obama behave this way? He always comes off as a snarky, arrogant creep.
All American people face up Obama did what he did and got caught lied to all of the American people on National Televisions station. I won't to vote for a person that can tell me truth and admit he or she was wrong see that all of the media stations is play this down as nothing but if another party step out of line it a big issue same on all of the media.
I won't to vote for a person that can tell me truth and admit he or she was wrong see that all of the media stations is play this down as nothing but if another party step out of line it a big issue same on all of the media. WTF does that mean? English is your second language isn't it> Yo must be one of those downmarket Latino voters.
I try not to watch political news on television, so I missed the coverage presented here. Damn! I'm glad I took the time to watch. What a stupid move by Barack. I'll say it, loud and proud: I think Hillary is awesome! I have painful memories of watching Kerry failing to react to media and Republican taunts. He was always a day late and a dollar short. Not Hillary. Barack made a(nother) rookie mistake and she was on him like a pit bull. She is an awesome campaigner. From a tactical perspective, Barack keeps setting himself up to fail. Oh, let us count the ways... he calls Edwards a hypocrite for not stopping outside groups from campaigning for him, setting himself up to look like a hypocrite now. He condemns Hillary for taking money from someone unsavory, setting himself up to look like a hypocrite for taking money from Rezko. He votes "present" on four abortion bills to avoid controversy, setting himself up to look like a coward now. He falsely claims to not support universal/single payer health care, only to be embarrassed by video showing him saying the opposite. He insults the Democratic voters of Florida, a state he would desperately need in the general election. And so on, and so on. All you boys who are soooo bothered by Hillary's success (oh, she makes you gag, poor babies!) need to remember one thing: with each successive election, women and latino men are making up an ever-increasing proportion of Democratic voters, and we support Hillary over Barack by a large margin. You may think the world revolves around your opinion - it certainly used to, and as far as the media is concerned, it still does - but in the real world, those days are long gone.
Sure, Ciccina...Latino chicks are taking over. Riiiight. Are we talking about the illegals from Mexico? Haven't you heard? You're being deported.
Sorry Ken, I'm Italian-American, and I could only HOPE that someone would try to deport me to Italy - I would take them up on it in a heartbeat. Nice effort, though - I didn't know they could teach troglodytes to type nowadays. Way to use those opposable thumbs!
I am pretty disgusted with Obama at this point. Snubbing Hillary is bad enough, but what about the lies he has been telling about her, such as those he delivered to his crowd in Denver yesterday. Hillary is trying to set the record straight on her facts blog that is linked from hillaryhub.com but these two lies really disgust me. Obama needs to be honest with the American people. So far, he's not doing so well on that front. Here are the most serious of his distortions: Sen. Obama then misrepresents Hillary’s position on diplomacy. Hillary criticized Sen. Obama for pre-committing to a personal meeting in his first year with "with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea." She never said that a president should only meet with America's friends. She also promised vigorous diplomatic efforts with all countries, friend and foe. Sen. Obama accuses Hillary of changing her policy on torture due to ‘the politics of the moment.’ He couldn’t be more wrong. Hillary met with retired generals, talked with experienced military officers, and read reports commissioned by the Defense Intelligence Agency. She concluded that 'torture cannot be part of American policy, period.'
