Clinton Campaign Becomes Transparent, Briefly

07 Feb 2008 04:49 pm

Every so often, the Clinton campaign opens the door to its inner sanctum every so briefly, allowing reporters a glance at the thinking. The transparency is deliberate and selective. Today, reporters were invited to listen to the authentic, weekly conference call with major donors. (Reporters were not invited to listen to the same call the week after Barack Obama won South Carolina).

A hoarse-voiced Terry McAullife started things off by announcing that the campaign had raised 7.5M online since the beginning of the month and 6.4 million in the last 30 hours. "That has surprised me, and I'm the ultimate optimist," he said.

And, then "Hillary stepped up to the plate," he said, referring to her self-loan of $5M last month.

"By the way, all of our staff are going one hundred percent paid," he said, in reference to news reports that the senior staff had volunteered to work for free.

Chief strategist Mark Penn briefed the donors on the Feb 5 results, noting that Clinton wound up winning Massachusetts and New Jersey by double digit margins. He said he estimated that the campaign had approximately 53% of the delegates it needs to win the nomination. (With Florida and Michigan factored in, the number would rise only slightly -- to 54%.) Penn conceded that there'd be "bumps int he road over the next week or two" --- he's referring to the Potomac primary next week and the Louisiana Democratic caucus (although Clinton today won the endorsement of Sen. Blanche Lincoln). But "we have double digit leads in Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania."

Finance chief Jonathan Mantz next updated the donors on dates for upcoming fundraisers -- by my count, he listed at least a dozen high-dollar events scheduled for the next three weeks.

Then questions -- and perhaps because the donors knew that reporters were listening, they were softballs.

New York biggie Alan Patricoff said that Clinton's self-contribution "really showed people that she was prepared to go to the line," and that he'd had several donors call him and mention the same thing.

Former Amb. Ed Romero, who until a few weeks ago was finance chair for Gov. Bill Richardson's campaign, said, that he, too, "had a call from one of my guys who said, "if she's in, I'm in."

Another donor asked for more events with Chelsea, which prompted Penn to note that Clinton won the votes of the youngest demographic -- 18 to 29 year olds -- in California and Massachusetts.

Dallas's Debbie Branson, a former president of the state trial bar, implored the campaign to send Clinton down to Texas pronto. "Y'all need to get to Texas... Texans are not afraid of a strong, independent woman... we need you to get here."

Blanche Lincoln represents Arkansas, not Louisiana. But you knew that, right?

New York biggie Alan Patricoff said that Clinton's self-contribution "really showed people that she was prepared to go to the line,"

Right, because up until now, we weren't quite sure how much Hillary really wanted to be president.

These are Clinton's donors, huh? I think I prefer Obama's.

What a cheap stunt. "If she's in, I'm in"? I guess her campaigning for the presidency for almost four years isn't enough to show you that she's in. I guess her dirty tricks machine in Nevada and SC wasn't enough to show you that she was in. It took some cheap, orchestrated stunt like this. Great observation, guy.

Hillary's campaign style reminds me of Mitt Romney. You can't really tell what's real and what's phony.

Since they were on the phone I'm assuming they didn't have to memorize their lines, but instead just read from the script.

What good would Blanche Lincoln's endorsement do in Louisiana? She's from Arkansas, and they already voted. Did you mean Mary Landrieu?

Anybody ask about this???http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=4257358&page=1

Today several readers have written expressing skepticism and outright incredulity about my earlier assertion that Robert Ethan, Obama-hater and regular “poster” to Mr. Ambien’s blog, is only 11 inches tall. In fact, I interviewed Mr. Ethan three years ago for my internet radio show “Weird World Wonders” (since defunct), and have, due to the mass of unsolicited email I have since received, reviewed my files from that time. First, rest assured: Mr. Ethan really does stand at only 11 inches tall, and he weighed, at that time, exactly 6 pounds and 10 ounces.

Having been inundated with several inquiries about the remarkable physiology of Mr. Ethan, as well as his lifestyle and history, I will attempt to answer some of them here.

“Where does Robert Ethan shop for clothing?”

All of Robert Ethan’s clothes are tailored especially for him by his wife, Mrs. Dottie Ethan, herself a dwarf and, as such, considerably taller than her husband. A fine seamstress, Mrs. Ethan has sewn dozens of custom sized suits, shirts, drawers, and the like for Robert. “I really hit a goldmine,” she reported, “when I stumbled across some old Bavarian doll clothes at a shop in northern Massachusetts, and was able to replicate the patterns for Robert. He looks especially commanding in three-piece suits, but also likes to lounge in regular T-shirts and sweats, like the rest of us.” Mrs. Ethan is able to find many casual outfits for her husband in the infants and children’s sections of department stores.

“Does Mr. Ethan own any pets?”

As you can imagine, normal domestic dogs and cats pose a danger to Mr. Ethan. In fact, even gerbils and mice are considered too risky for their household. Thus he contents himself with the companionship of a pair of cheerful yellow canaries, safely ensconced within the confines of their cage.

“Can Robert Ethan sire children?”

No, he cannot. Naturally, this was never discussed openly with the Ethans, but in checking with a doctor acquaintance of mine, he pointed out that, due to complicated medical reasons, conception was virtually impossible in such a case.

Interestingly, in relation to this question, Dottie confided to me over a cup of coffee that Robert Ethan cannot stand to be touched. Apparently his size provokes unsolicited affection from women and men who, upon first seeing him, are seized with an irresistible urge to fondle his tiny frame. Naturally, he has since developed a positive hatred of any form of human physical contact.

The Clinton Campaign Poverty Pimped the media to run a FREE national fund-raising drive! The question has to be is the media just that brain dead that they can't see through an obvious stunt or are they complicity. The FACT that Marc "conveniently" omitted Terry McAuliffe admitting it was stunt answers that question.

From the Politico:

Clinton claims a money surge, plans ads

Terry McAuliffe told donors and reporters on a conference call that the campaign has raised $7.5 million online this month, more than $6 million of it in the last 24 hours.

The message: She's alive and kicking.

Interestingly, the campaign's spin is that Clinton's loan to the campaign -- taken by many as a sign of desperation -- was an effective fundraising tactic, encouraging people to donate.

"They said, 'I didn’t know you needed money, I thought you had all the money you need,'" McAuliffe said.

They should really televise that call on the Hallmark Channel.

oh, wait...

An "effective fund-raising tactic?" Charming! Tony Soprano would be proud! Come to think of it, I think Tony had a few more principles, twisted though they may have been, than Team Clinton. PS: I live a floor below one of the Clinton campaign people mentioned in the conference. He is SHOCKED,SHOCKED thar my spouse and I support OBAMA!

The whole thing sounds like a publicity stunt to me. A pretty transparent one too.

They expect us to think that they didn't know that post-Super Tuesday fundraising was going well yesterday when they announced that their staff was going to go without pay and that Hillary was loaning the campaign $5 million?

In the words of the wannabe co-president, "GIVE ME A BREAK!"

DID ANYONE ASK TO SEE THEIR TAX RETURNS?

i think that obama will win but thats just my opinion b/c he has the quality and face it america we arent ready for a woman president. she cried over a question what will happen when terrorists come will she be crying in her office? another personal hucbee is really good i think he could win but he doesnt have the money and now its about the money.

So they had a candid conference call...with the national press listening? I'll bet it was as free-ranging and open as a Brezhnev-era Duma session.

Why didn't they just let everyone listen? It was obviously a kabuki play, but why do we need journalists to report it to us? In the investment world, conference calls with analysts are almost always open for the public to listen.

my personal guess is that obama is going to win he has the stuff to get it all the way and hucbee as well but he doesnt have the money. clinton well there is a story on her she cried over a question and face it america we arent ready for a woman president when terrorists come over will she be in her office crying why me why me... well i say no clinton. :(

On Saturday, we have a primary, not a caucus.

Did these claims of a fund-raising surge sound very different from the ones the Edwards campaign was making just before he dropped out?

Did these claims of a fund-raising surge sound very different from the ones the Edwards campaign was making just before he dropped out?

She LOST the votes of the 18-29 demographic in her OWN state. Moreover, she didn't crack 60% in her OWN state. More Moreover, she only cracked 60% in one state, TN, while Senator Obama surpassed 60% in 8.

Every little bit of this campaign seems choreographed somehow and there isn't even a single reason to believe this kind of deliberate shaping of public opinion will stop if she's elected. I feel as if her voters are heading toward a cliff with blindfolds on and, no matter how loud I scream, they're not going to hear me in enough time to stop. Scary still, there's a chance the rest of us will be falling off with them.

1.Trilby, thank you. Thank you very much. I now have a new found understanding of, and empathy for, robert ethan.
2.I typically hate conspiracy theories, but I'm thinking of starting a new one anyway. It involves the coincidence of the end of the self-funded campaign of Mittens Romney and the apparent beginning of the self-funded segment of the HRC campaign. Hmm? Maybe it could get some legs here? Can I hear some plausible ideas of how to move this thing forward?

When they invited you to be a part of the call, did they provide copies of the scripts those folks were evidently reading?

It speaks volumes that you were so willing to fall for this stunt. They did this to raise fervor amongst their supporters to fundraise.

THAT's why Obama didn't do it - because it's cheap publicity that he didn't need. And to even compare it to that is so stupid - he'd just won a landslide victory; why would he need reporters on his conference calls? Obama outraised her even without all this transparent nonsense.

I smell a rat. Nowhere have they said that a substantial margin of the raised money is available for the primary and isn't big donors double-dipping by making general election contributions. This is like Mitt Romney's phony post-New Hampshire fundraising that saw him claim $4 million, though it was later revealed that 3/4 of that total was earmarked for the general election.

But then again, I always seem to smell a rat when Terry McAuliffe and Mark Penn are involved. What happened to that rumored campaign shakeup that was going to send those hacks packing?

Timothy H.

Every little bit of what campaign seems choreographed? All of them? or just Hillary's?
Don't you think they are choreographed?
No more or less than the ballet.
People spend hours or days rehearsing debate appearances or didn't you know that?
stump speeches are written and tested and workshopped and focus grouped and each time they give it is a rehearsal for the next.
Barack has speech writers and so did JFK or didn't you know that?
Do you think that barack just casually told people that his campaign raised 32 million dollars or do you think maybe that information was meant to handle a news cycle or drive a stake through the heart of Hillary's campaign? or was it meant to position him as nearing invincible?
Obama voters cry about every little bit of news they do not choreograph.
Superdelegates? thats the system: that's how its built. They are mostly elected officials. The electorate is split and the superdelegates are kind of split too.
Is obama bitching loud enough about a system that he knew about before he announced? does he want to change the rules?
Kennedy and kerry are superdelegates so does obama feel they should have to vote for Hillary because Massachusetts did or does he only want to control/choreograph how other candidates' superdelegates vote?

You smell a rat? Why can't the axis of hillary raise money just as quickly as the axis of Obama?
is it because in your fairy tale obama is jimmy stewert and prince charming and he kisses you and you wake up and write him a check but Hillary is the evil step mom who dies in the end?
Our fairy tale has a happy ending for Hillary and she's jimmy stewart and we run and help her keep the bank open and it's a wonderful life.
obama supporters can't change a light bulb without 29 people going on line to call hillary names.

Hillary gets constant jabs from the left, right, upper, lower and all corners, but all you haters like it or not, she is still standing tall. She is a true WOMAN, a TRUE american woman who will withstand all the harshness of her critics and put up a fight till the finish. I am with her as with millions of other Americans who voted for her. We do not buy in the Obama hype. We ignore all the negativity surrounding her campaign bec. most of them come from men who oppress and despise successful women. Their egos can't accept a strong, brilliant and powerful woman. Just read Playboy to satify your repressed souls and leave Hillary alone. Who cares if you vote for Mc Cain or Obama? Just leave our Hillary alone people. I contributed $100 to her campaign today and I feel proud.

@KAPS: You're making me afraid for my menopausal years.

OBAMA DODGING DEBATES!

Barack runs from Hillary Clinton challenge to debate one on one. I would say MANO A MANO, but I have reservations about according THAT HOLOGRAM WITH OUTSIZED EARS the distinction of manhood.

Maybe if they allow him to have his campaign manager, his speech writer, and a few fact checkers HOLDING HIS HANDS at the debate he might consent.

Can't have too much protection from a 130 pound 60 year old New York matron. After all, he no longer has his HOMEBOYS, John, Dennis, and Bill, to save his sorry ass.

Michael C. -- glad to see you aren't playing into the stereotype of Clinton supporters as paranoid. :)

It's nothing against Hillary, and if it IS primary money, she looks even better than the story is being played, because the math right now is so far against her. According to Johnathan Alter, 70% of her donor base has already given the maximum amount, making it much harder for her to fund-raise, as she can't mobilize those who have already given to give more the same way Obama can.

Not to be nasty, but maybe you should operate under the assumption that not everyone is out to make your candidate look bad.

Though as for Mark Penn and Terry McAuliffe, they inspire a lot of mistrust for me, since everytime I see them on TV or read their memos, the distortion of the truth in search of spin is rather astounding.

To name but a single example, see Mark Penn's almost-infamous "where's the bounce" memo after the Iowa caucus. Written about a day after, it argued disingenuously that Obama's bounce was nowhere to be found in the polling data, and that he was still 10 points back. Mark Penn is a professional pollster, I am not, but even I could read the polls well enough to realize that most of them had been taken largely BEFORE the Iowa caucus. It was empty and dishonest spin, and that's all. As it of course turned out, Obama closed the gap in New Hampshire (and you could argue pulled ahead only to see Hillary surge in the last day). It's not because of his association with Hillary that I mistrust Penn, it's because basically every time he opens he mouth I need a decoder ring to figure out what he's saying.

Take a look at two things-- Clinton's fundraising sources, and the people who staff her campaign.

That's all we need to know about where she is coming from.

Go, Obama !

news reports: "the more voters get to know Obama, the more they seem to like him."

well, i got to know obama. and liked him. at least for 6 months. and the more i REALLY got to know him, i got bored. he really has nothing. and he knows it. and he knows he has a race against time- to get the nomination before anyone gets bored with him, too. after the inspiring words, reality sinks in. he is untested and just overly ambitious - having the gall to run as president with almost nothing to run on! i'll take mccain or clinton anytime. i dont want inspiration. i want work done.

Mrs. Clinton running out of funds - desperatley needs free TV time - proposes debate a week:

The number of debates Obama and Mrs Clinton have already participated in so far is more than the number of debates in any previous Democratic primary.

Mrs. Clinton and her supporters are really afraid that if Obama spends more time with the voters they will get to know him better, because when people get to know him better the prefer him to Mrs. Clinton.

Mrs. Clinton, you have had more than your fair share of time in the limelight and voters know you well. We have been aware of your favorite song about the White House: "I just can't wait to be IN" (sung to the tune of "I just can't wait to be KING"). Now give us a chance to know Obama. Trying to keep him away from us. How sad!

It is also sad to see your husband tailing Obama wherever he goes to speak. Sad because it does not help, your husband gets way fewer people to listen to him. And day be day your husband's legacy is being ruined. Soon he will be known as "The Tail that could not Wag".

According to Johnathan Alter, 70% of her donor base has already given the maximum amount, making it much harder for her to fund-raise...

Nonsense. Hillary's fundraising surge in the last 48 hours demonstrate Alter is wrong: there's no rule against adding people to your "base" of contributors, and hundreds of thousands of people -- many of them women -- and many of them sobered by the possibility the party may settle on a candidate sure to get clocked by centrist John McCain -- are flocking to Hillary's website to make donations. Folks, if you're not bamboozled by the kumbaya chorus, and you realize as I do that John McCain is an extremely viable candidate who will pummel Barack Obama in a general election (I shudder to think of how the former would do in a debate against McCain), you should go to Hillary's site and make a donation.

McCain will crush obie--

Then, by all means, let Clinton release the details of her new fundraising and prove me wrong. I'd rather see it for myself than take Terry McAuliffe's word for how extraordinary it is. Again, if she really has raised another $7.5 mil for the primary, it's a huge accomplishment for her. I just haven't seen anything to make me believe that she has.

obama is full of air. if will smith or morgan freeman ran, they would have more 'substance' to run on than obama. if clinton is seen as ambitious, obama is much worse. he runs on hope simply because he has nothing to run on. why does anybody believe anything this guy says? mccain or clinton anytime.

Only Darth Vader can crush OB1-Wan Kenobi

The questions and comments just keep pouring in regarding Robert Ethan and his astounding recorded height of just 11 inches. I will try to answer them as best I can according to my memory and notes of the man.

He Pingping is widely considered the world’s smallest man, standing at a mere 2 ft., 4 in. Why should we believe your account that robert ethan is only 11 inches tall?

Note that He Pingping has applied to the Guinness Book of World Records as world’s shortest adult male, while Robert Ethan, conversely, shuns the spotlight. In fact, my interview with him was hampered by Mr. Ethan’s bristling response to any direct questions about his height. I learned much from his wife, Dottie, who told me, for example, that when the Ethans travel, Dottie bundles Robert into a picnic hamper, to avoid the ridicule and curiosity of the public.

Because of his extreme hypersensitivity to questions about his size, which led to rather vitriolic responses on his part, I had to resort to using round-about methods in interviewing Ethan, such as in this exchange:

Trilby: "What do you like to do when you’re off work?"

Ethan: "I usually enjoy a good martini at the end of the day."

Trilby: "What’s your recipe for a good martini?"

Ethan: "Well, I take a good thimbleful of dry gin, stir in just a smidgeon of dry vermouth, and finish it off with a slice of lemon."

Trilby: "How much lemon?"

Ethan: "A slice about the size of your clipped pinky nail."

In short (ha ha), as long as I treated Robert Ethan as "normal," we got along.

Given the tiny size of robert ethan's vocal cords, was it hard to understand him?

Strangely enough, Mr. Ethan possesses a robust baritone voice. You might wonder how this is possible in such a pipsqueak. In the immortal words of Brian Wilson, "God only knows."

Why do you capitalize robert ethan’s name? He always goes lowercase.

Journalistic haste – and mere habit on my part. In robert ethan’s book "small is better," so it’s only natural that he would prefer the lowercase. My apologies.

Is it possible that you were tricked, and that robert ethan is in fact a very precocious small child?

No. At the time of my interview, robert ethan was 46 years old --- ironically, the very same age as that political man-of-the-hour he so fulsomely loathes.

ATTENTION HILLARY SUPPORTERS ! SPECIAL NOTICE:

Due to the under-handed tactics and inner-party polarization of Hillary Clinton, millions of Obama supporters WILL NOT support her should she become the nominee. This, in part, is due to the fact that many feel that she is already trying to cheat her way to the nomination by claiming victory in Michigan and Florida. Hillary Clinton has totally alienated even her own party members. This is sad....but true. She will not win the Presidency without full Democratic support. Your continued support for Clinton is actually a vote for McCain. Sorry.....these are just the facts! The really sad thing is....we used to like the Clintons !

One new slick Clinton tactic is the request for weekly debates. The Clintons know that when Obama spends time in a state....they get to know him and he does well. So if they can disrupt his campaign schedule they'd feel successful. And if he refuses....they'll act like he's in hiding from the debates. THE TRICKS NEVER END !!!!!! bUT IT'S ALL IN VAIN.....she'll never win the presidency without Dem support.....WAKE UP AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it's time for the Clintons to bow out for the good of the country. they seem now willing to tear apart the democratic party. that's sad. the people have spoken with there votes and money. time to play lets make a deal instead of thinking of ways to split the base. lotsa love to all my leftys and citizens.

What's most disturbing here is that, even if this wasn't just a fundraising publicity stunt, knowing what we know about the Clintons, it is so easy to think that it was. Hillary is the candidate who cried wolf. We just don't know when we can believe her. Obviously not a good trait in a leader.

Michael Sweeney-

But can you see that to a hillary supporter ploufe and Axelrod also seem wildly misleading and less than honest brokers of information.
I don't care for penn's sweaty upper lip and I don't think his new book is amazing either but they are like coaches at halftime asserting only the spin. I do love Hillary though. And I do have concerns about Obama but his supporters as represented here are bigtime scary: I hope they all aren't so full of hate.
If I loved obama I would probably cheer ploufe and JJ Jr and maybe even axelrod. I laugh as they jockey and spin.

Michael C. --

Glad to see you don't care for Penn either. He's done more harm than good to her campaign, and if she cans him this week (as the rumor goes) and brings on Carville, she'll be both a better candidate and President.

But you're absolutely right -- taking anything these self-interested staffers say at face value is foolish, no matter whose campaign they work for.

Also couldn't agree more about some of the people on these comments (both Obama and Clinton supporters) -- they scare the crap out of me. Handy rule of thumb: before you post, people, ask yourself "is this something that I would be proud to associate with the campaign I support?" Personally, I think Hillary Clinton would be a disaster for the Democratic Party, but I recognize that both she and her supporters deserve my respect and civility.

she'll never win the presidency without Dem support.....WAKE UP AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greg Jones: Most objective analysis I've read indicates Clinton holds down Democratic voters better than Obama vis a vis McCain. Also, polls show that the overwhelming majority of Democratic voters are happy with the choices we have available this year. Your cheap threats aren't borne out by opinion polls, although they are indicative of the kind of hyperpartisan BS one encounters on the web.

Nice innovate use of caps and exclamation points, by the way.

Michael Sweeney- I don't hate Penn: I think his job is to serve his candidate. I think he does that better behind the cameras and closed doors than in front. He does spin. but a lot of his spin I agree with because I think hillary is so great.
Axelrod is a disaster on camera just like penn and so these guys must be really great in the background.
I really love carville but I love him because he is the most loyal spinner in the history of spinning. great on camera. but I think he often made the point that people doing his kind of job are of a time or era and his is from before. And
he always spoke or hunger or need to win and he and matelin don't possess that anymore. None of them are cute and cuddly like george S. and Carville. But I think they do serve their candidates. I think axelrod is one of those people who hate the clintons and I do think this is a hitch in his campaign: they spend a lot of time as cross purposes to get the hillary haters: I just think they are poisonous: the comments of greg tate here being an example.
I'd be really positive about obama if hillary wasn't an option but I think he has what might be horrible weaknesses of a kerry-like almost gore-like nature in the general. I hope I am wrong.

This is where Robert Ethan has been? I missed you; you crazy bastard! Ben Smith's blog has been too sane without your batsh*t insane rantings.

Bottom Line:

Like all of you. I know that health care is the most critical, and important issue facing the American people. Now, and in the coming elections. And like the vast majority of the American people, I want HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law NOW! "Single payer, Tax Supported, Not For Profit, True Universal Health Care" free for all as a right. Like every other developed country in the world has. See: http://www.house.gov/conyers/news_hr676.htm

“HR 676:
For church goers: less money to insur. companies and more to the church- lots more.
Srs on Medicare: save way over $100/wk. Because no more medigap, long term care & dental insur. needed. No more drug bills.”

But if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our current politicians to get HR 676 passed into law before the elections. We will have to identify, and replace all the politicians standing in the way of passage of HR 676. And, I think the best first place to start is with the politicians that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bills for the kids. Passed by congress four times.

But what about the President. It was Bush after all that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by congress to assure more health coverage for Americas kids. So which of the presidential hopefuls do I think will be most supportive of implementing the demand of the majority of the American people to have HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law immediately!

We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents. But none of the top Presidential candidates directly support HR 676, the only true Universal Health Care plan. So I am supporting Hillary Clinton. She is the only top candidate that has ever actually fought for universal health care before.

I have enormous admiration, and respect for Hillary Clinton. She fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds back in 1993. To prevent this disastrous health care crisis that is now devastating the American people, and America. She fought so hard for the American people that she risk almost completely destroying her husbands presidency. I haven't forgotten her heroic effort. If any Presidential hopeful for universal health care deserves my support, it's her.

Also, if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our government to give us HR 676 which we all so desperately need NOW! Then we will need the most skilled politician we can get on our side to broker the best health care plan for the American people that we can get. Though it will be less than we need, and less than we deserve. The politician I think to best do this is Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are probably the most skilled politicians in American history.

The insurance industry, and medical industry that has been ripping you off, and killing you has given Hillary Clinton so much money because they fear her. They have also given Barack Obama so much money because they fear Hillary Clinton. They think they can manipulate Barack Obama against the best interest of the American people better than they can manipulate Hillary Clinton. There is no race issue with Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are the poster family for how African Americans want white people to be towards African Americans.

As always, African Americans are suffering, and dieing in this health care crisis at a much higher rate than any other group in America. The last time there was any significant drop in the African American death rate was when Bill Clinton was president.

My fellow Americans, you are dieing needlessly at an astounding rate. In higher numbers than any other people in the developed world. Rich, and poor a like. Insured, and uninsured. Young, and old. Men, women, children, and babies. And we the American people must stop it. And fix it NOW! Keep Fighting!!! Never! give up hope. There are millions of lives at stake. Bless you all... You are doing great!

Hillary now has to BUY the Presidency: a "good investment" of "my own money," in her own words. At the same time, by threatening not to have the funds to pay her staff, she is able to get Americans to open their meagre purses and give her megabucks, despite that fact that she and Bill have multimillions in their bank accounts. Now with insufficient funds to buy airtime she is pressuring Obama to debate every week to get hereself more media attention than she can on her own. JUST SAY NO. She is thoroughly calculating and mean-spirited. She is never desperate, because she knows all the smear and steal games that have kept the Clinton dynasty still in possession of the Democratic machine. It is not Hillary we hate. It is her tactics.

It is a great endorsement. Every delegate (in this case super delegate) counts.

I am glad that more and more people recognize and get courage to stand for Hillary, the best candidate in this primary race.

HIllary 08. :)

I have a question --

Sen Clinton has been in the Senate since 2001 and before that she was first lady since 1992

Her income and holdings in 1992 was under a million dollars

SHE SAID THE $5 MILLION WAS "MY MONEY" - so is it a fair question - where did she get the money to loan herself??

She did not make enough from her books -- which is the only other possible income source

AND if the money was from Pres Clinton - isn't it fair and reasonable that the donors from the Clinton library and his financial returns are made available?

BECAUSE THE QUESTION IS - WHO IS FUNDING HILLARY TO FUND HERSELF?

Isn't this a reasonable inquiry?

jacksmith,

I'm looking very carefully for where Barack Obama took money from the healthcare and insurance industries and seem to be having trouble finding it. Any help? I'm "die-ing" to find out.

Another Overeducated White Guy For Obama

I gaurantee that if we nominate Hillary, the Republicans win the White House. All these people that say Obama would get beat up by Republicans are just spinning fear. All the polls show Hillary nearly or does lose to McCain. Hell, the way she has been acting, I'd probably not vote for her either.

anyone curious why she 'loaned' her campaign the money. are her donors giving her money as a loan? Hey Billary, can i 'loan' you my vote?
Oligarchy =DEMONcracy. Billary put the crown DOWN!

i like the Mitt/Clinton comparison. So many things are contrived with her campaign. They think we are all that stupid? Give us a little credit, why don't cha. It's like an after-school special. Imagine 4/8 years of this stuff. Bush doesn't even play for being this stupid.

The Obama cultists get progressively more erratic as time goes by. Very similar to the Deanies from 2004. I suspect a lot of them are one and the same. Four years older but no smarter. Eventually the campaign collapses under it's own delusional hyperbole.

Hopefully they don't give Obama a position of authority afterwards, to engender a similar MASSIVE SCREWUP AS HO HO THE CLOWN HAS BLUNDERED THE DNC INTO.

Dear Democrats,

We are at a stalemate. Cut the #'s a hundred ways- super tuesday was a push when it comes to the #'s (popular, delegates, demographic strongholds) One thing I think he did not discuss enough, however, is electability. it is not good for dems to get ugly and a longer race for the dems provides a vacuum for GOP party to galvanize behind mccain. But what also is very important is that while Hillary does draw from the dem sweet spot demographically, she galvanizes the Right so much that if she were to go toe to toe with mccain- she will lose. Especially when it comes to her resume and voting record. And I don't think 2 months or the summer will change that. Not to mention she doesn't have the funds...nor will she even if becoming the nominee. So as much as I think this forum, and the conversations around the country amongst dems, is healthy discourse and valid, I think dems should be on the offensive with mccain, especially obama. By drawing his distinctions with mccain, Obama will highlight hillary's deficiencies as a real contender....but not in such a head on manner. What is most interesting to me is the democratic party's blinders. Exit polls from super tuesday are interesting when they probe WHY people voted for their candidate:
Obama: change
Hillary: experience
Mccain: 60 percent said "bc he can win"
The dem party needs to start thinking macro so that its about taking back the white house and winning, as the reps are. To do this, I think its essential to view the current stalemate as a disservice to the greater goal. Hillary's a great candidate, but she's compromised in many immutable ways that a few weeks of campaigning will not mitigate and only further the stalemate and allow the gop to solidify. Obama has the momentum, the reach, the funds, the message and most importantly- the resume to to offer stark contrast to mccain that could unseat the rep stranglehold. We need to press the electability issue. Plain and simple. If Hillary was the American she claims to be, she would follow Mitt's lead and get out of the way. Otherwise we should all save our breath and start discussing how we get out of the 100 year war which mccain promises.

Riles: you are a funny guy: Hillary is a good american whether she does what you want her to or not. You are really suggesting that if she were a good democrat she would do whaqt you order or suggest here which is also bizarre of you because even if we desperately disagree with republicans they are also good americans.

Obama is not ahead the way mc cain is. Hillary is not behind the way romney was. It was almost numerically impossible in republican race to get nomination for romney.

Hillary is against the war and McCain is for the war. does it need to be more stark than that?
Hillary is pro-choice and McCain is anti-choice: is that stark enough for you?

let the debates happen, let people vote, let the process continue: it is only feb 8th.
I can understand why obama wants people not to run against him and why you create this phony argument about patriotism: he's got some soft spots and can't close the deal.
In this way, I agree with obama supporters: no more debates. looking at these candidates side by side and listening to them answer questions from journalists is not fair to Obama. He shouldn't have to lose anymore debates or answer any more questions. Even lowering himself to standing on stage next to a woman with half of all democratic voters behind her is definately a ridiculas idea: he's better than that.
The less they know about obama and the less we know about the positions he does or doesn't take the better it is, right? transparency is bad now

Hillary was for the war before she was against the war.

Obama is very rude, corrupt, shameless person. He is a divider rather than uniter .

He has been playing race card(Now he got he wanted, almost all African-Americans vote for him in every state), and playing games of JFK, MLK, Regan, now Ted Kennedy..

What next? Bush? YES.

Indeed He is just like another inexperienced, divisive BUSH, we American should block the his way to White House!

Frankly speaking, her ability to lead from Day 1 is dead. If she can't mange her own primary campaign, with money in the 9-figure area, how in heaven's name can she manage a natinaol budget in the trillions? This decision is getting easier by the day. Obama Ya'll.

Here's my question: Does the fact that she "loaned" the money to herself mean that donors to the Clinton campaign will be repaying the loan, rather than funding additional efforts? Why didn't she just give it? I find this very odd, and I'm surprised no one's asked this question. I would have a hard time giving to the campaign if that was the case. Is there an obvious reason that I'm not thinking of to explain why she wouldn't just fund herself outright? Have there been any articles about this?

Why won't Hillybilly release their tax returns so the American people can see where their new-found wealth came from?

The answer is too obvious: they are hiding their shady deals.

We've had enough of the disbarred lawyer and his carpetbagger wife.

Let's get someone honest and who is not scandal plagued to run the country.

Obama '08.

Nevermind the tax records, they will not release the Diane Blair Papers detailing the controversial 1992 Clinton Campaign, until 2009 because the papers must be "checked for quality control". By the way, the investigator Diane Blair is now deceased so she would never be able to tell us if the papers had been "cleaned up". For more info visit http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=3825609
