Conservatives V. McCain

02 Feb 2008 04:46 pm

It's kind of easy for conservatives to swear they'd never vote for McCain when he's still facing two opponents with at least an outside chance of beating him...

But here's betting that at least one of these folks...Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity -- will find it in their financial interest to saddle back up if and when McCain becomes the nominee.

There may be disagreement about who is a real "conservative", but it's crystal clear that this is shaping up to be the Far Right V. McCain.
Limbaugh is the Wizard of Oz of the Far Right, the great and all-powerful voice of Talk Radio, commanding an army of angry listeners...not voters. He's proving to be omnipotent on the radio, impotent at the voting booth.
Roger Ailes started the GOP down this road when he and Lee Atwater were young turks working for Nixon. They pushed for a strategy of confrontation, of winning by dividing, and signaling that the GOP was the real home for angry white men.
Be careful what you wish for: Now the GOP is being held hostage by Ailes, Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, O'Reilly, and a number of other warmongers who have never served a day in the military.
As with Kennedy's support of Obama, it would be great to see a few more of the major figures of the conservative movement step forward, step up, and support McCain.
When will the GOP sever its ties with Talk Radio? After Super Tuesday, if it goes well for McCain, he should challenge Limbaugh to a debate. He would be a hit overnight with the independents and moderates he needs - and a lot of "conservatives" would love him for it.

Financial interest? Isn't a Clinton Presidency the best possibility for angry right-wing radio? A Clinton Presidency that is caused by a failure that Rush opposed?

I'm a conservative and I won't vote for McCain in November.

I simply don't trust him. Look how the man lied about one of his opponents two days before the Florida primary.

Also, conservative talk radio may find some things to support McCain against Hillary but it will be very tepid support.

I just get this sense that GOP establishment who is rallying around McCain has one of those red "take a number" machines that you see at bakery's and deli's and they've told us (the GOP masses) that McCain's number has been called up. It's pathetic. McCain 2008 = Dole 1996

Let's hope it doesn't come to that and the GOP elects the brightest candidate and the one with the most intelligence to compete against the Dems in November....that is Mitt Romney.
