Crowd Size Update

02 Feb 2008 04:49 pm

HRC gets 10,000+ in San Jose, per her campaign and law enforcement. (The local paper put it at 4000).

Obama gets 15,000 in Ada County (Boise), Idaho. That's 7 times the number who caucused in Idaho in 2004.

Obama gets 20,000 in Minneapolis, which is way more than the 6000 one correspondent e-mailed.

McCain gets 1,000 in Birmingham.

Obama gets 20,000 in Minneapolis, not 6,000. The Target arena filled up in a day.

I am quite sure that Minneapolis # is wrong. My mom tried to get tickets but they were sold out, and the stadium definitely seats way more than 6,000. This diary suggests there were over 20,000 tickets sold.

And Obama goes to Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis where the Rams play tonight, which seats 70,000.

Will he fill that?

Minnesota is wrong. It is close to 20,000.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. He got over 13K in Denver, which is about the same size, so I'd have to believe he got close to that in Minnesota.

It looks pretty full.

Yea, I'm pretty sure that you're figure for Obama in Minneapolis is wrong. We're at the event and it seems that Brian's figure of approx 20k is closer than 6k (although 20k seems too high as well).

Live blog of event here.

Marc never reads or responds to his comments, but here's another shot from a MN site:

Barack Obama fans are lining up by the thousands to see their candidate at an afternoon rally at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

Obama's Minnesota campaign says 10,000 were on the waiting list after 20,000 free tickets sold out. Several hundred also were standing in line without tickets, hoping to get in.

Indeed, he doesn't respond...somewhat annoying. But at least he allows comments, unlike Sullivan. So that's at least something, I suppose.

2008central - thanks for the liveblog link. It's terrific.

And actually, I'd rather having no comments than ones the blogger completely ignores. It's not like Marc is overrun with comments. Sullivan at least seems to read his emails because he often posts them.

See? You're not even listening. Poop. Monkey butt.

I think Marc is getting a bad wrap. I think that it is sometime difficult to know when you have comments on a blog. That has been my experience.

Obama had about 3500 in Albuquerque, and 5000 in Santa Fe yesterday. Pretty good crowds indeed.

The target center has a capacity of 20,500 for basketball. I would expect that the fire marshall held the capacity at this number today. I arrived about 90 minutes before the doors opened and I would expect 4,000 were in line before me. The stream of people coming behind me in line never stopped. I expect thousands were turned away today.

Actually only 4K for HRC in San Jose.

Why link to facts when you can just make shit up? Does Ambers have editors.... does he at least have an intern to factcheck?

LAME.

McCain got 1,000 in Birmingham.

By comparison, I was at a Barack rally in Birmingham that drew 11,000 people.

An estimated 5000 Idahoans turned out for the caucuses in 2004: http://www.idahostatesman.com/newsupdates/story/283059.html

So jack that number down to 3 times as many.

The Obama campaign website says "nearly 20,000 in Minneapolis" -- the photos show a packed arena.

Thank you for updating the figures, Marc.

I know four people who I never in my wildest dreams would have thought would ever vote for Obama who changed their minds in the last week. One, an avid Clinton fan, switched last weekend after he decided he didn't like the way the Clintons were handling the "race," to use his words. The others are members of my ex-girlfriend's Republican family, who said they can't help but be inspired by Obama and are ready for - wait for it - CHANGE!
One of these people lives in Cali, one in St. Paul, one in NYC and one in Va., where I live and will be enthusiastically voting for Obama in a little over a week.
Go Barack! w00t!

YES WE CAN
end Clintonian hypocricy

YES WE CAN
end Clintonian racism

YES WE CAN
end the Clinton dynasty

Intrade has Hillary up a couple of points. Bettors must have heard about the Gallup tracking poll showing her lead has widened to seven points over Obama.

I live in Idaho and was lucky enough to attend the Obama's event in Boise this morning. It was packed and local media reported 13-14000 in attendance with an unknown number unable to get in. The Idaho Democratic Party is currently on cloud nine with the level of interest they are getting but even after moving many of the local caucuses to larger venues there is continuing concern that not everyone will be able to participate on Tuesday. We are expecting that the Boise area will come out in enormous numbers for Obama but much less certain how the rest of the state will work out!

Obama blew Boise away this morning. Cece (ex-Gov. Cecil Andrus) in his intor said "Damn, this is a crowd"! (13,00+) Barack was smart, witty, and spoke to the issues. When he smiled people liked to come out of their seats.

Amazing. Never thought I would live to see the words, quote, "YES WE CAN end Clintonian racism".

Indeed what a vicious campaing he is running that at the end of day (or very near it) his supporters can pronouce the Clintons as racists.

If the Clintons can be so branded, imagine what can happen to us ordinary folks.

Obama is NOT a good man.

Obama NEVER insinuated the Clinton's were racists, nor have I seen any such innuendo in his campaign. Bill Clinton brought this charge upon himself by foolishly comparing Obama's win in South Carolina with Jesse Jackson's. There were other choices much more historically relevant. The whole purpose of that comment was to portray Obama as a "black" candidate. Racist? No. Stupid? Darn tootin'.

We were at the Obama rally in Minneapolis. The was very nearly a full house, only a few upper deck seats remained. 20 K sounds about right.

UPDATE: 20K ppl show up for Barack in St. Louis!

If crowd size determined elections John Kerry would be president. Hopefully Team O has a way to turn these people into Super Tuesday voters.

is this history being made or what?

is this history being made or what?

I saw on C-SPAN and in a local paper that Obama's appearance in Missouri today had 20,000 in attendance.

Bill Clinton, campaigning in smaller cities, got 3000 and 1000 in the same state.

And Ron Paul drew 3000 in Denver. As long as you're keeping track of that twerp McCain, who will never be able to fill an arena, you might as well mention someone else who can still draw a bigger crowd.

I remember a man by the name of John Kennedy who inspired a nation to dream, and challenged us to not ask what our country could do for us, but what we could do for our country. Great leaders challenge us to dream, and to act upon those dreams so that we can move forward. Unfortunately, Hillary is a well meaning person whose time to lead has passed. Obama is the new JFK, the individual who dares us to dream, and to come together to try and solve some of the most vexing problems in our nation's history. The right wing reactionaries want us to stop dreaming, and to be quiet, and go back inside our little cottages, and let them run this country into the ground. To hell with Cheney, Bush, Mcain, and all of their cronies. Their time has passed. It's time for a new beginning in America.
