The governor of Pennsylvania says that white conservatives might not vote for a black guy like Obama.

Oh and the white conservatives LOVE Hillary! Ed Rendell is such a tool.
If this kind of thing doesn't serve as the final nail in Hillary's coffin, I don't know what will. Talk about galvanizing supporters and coaxing fence-sitters to favor Obama... The more Hillary slips, the more brain farts she and her supporters unleash upon the public. Check out Bill's 'Obama is "smoke and mirrors"' line in the Politico.
Ahh, good ol' Fast Eddie. There's no way PA goes red in November, even if (as the saying goes) the state is Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Alabama in between. The unions are just too strong in the state for it to tilt Republican.
Tinisoli: excellent point about Bill. When I read that "smoke and mirrors" line, I thought: he has now crossed the line (if he hadn't already) where he will no longer be able to speak with *any* credibility in favor of Obama in the general election (if he is the nominee). A sad thing to have to say about the most recent Democratic president.
Just what I was thinking...putting in Maggie as campaign manager is cover for the Clintons' next round of racially-tinged politics that is going to start right around now that we are beginning a stretch of time in which black voters will be less important in the upcoming contests.
I guess since rendell isn't running again he can afford to offend all of those black voters who have worked so hard to get him and keep him office. and really, who is he talking about? conservative white dems? the ones who voted for casey? why would they pick hillary over obama? white dems should balk at his assertions! come on obama--take on the rust belt! tell the truth. talk about job creation. talk about what you will do for these conservative white dems because although many of them voted for bush, they have truly suffered under his administration. tell them how the war is killing them in other ways. take it to rendell, who has called these honest people bigots--even though they voted for him, a non-catholic, pro-choice new yorker! hillary--get control of your surrogates if you can. do you really want an overly motivated philadelphia & vicinity?
A political reporter more interested in context might also have mentioned that Gov. Rendell is a prominent supporter of -- wait for it -- Hillary Clinton. So, with that in mind, it's doesn't appear to be so much a savvy, "tough love" assessment from the governor of a large, diverse state as it appears to be more race-baiting from a Clinton surrogate. It's funny how you stripped out that little factoid from your capsule summary of the linked source.
Rendell says he's going to deliver Pa. for Hillary. As a former resident of the state's best city, the more people in the 'Burgh hear Rendell hawking for HRC, the more likely they are to vote for Obama.
Well there goes Hillary plan to save Penn when McCain names Ridge his running mate.
Both Ed Rendell and white conservatives are brain dead morons.
I know many white conservatives and other voters who won't vote for a calcultating, cynical B****. So now Ed and I are even.
Very funny how people get so bent out of shape on a daily basis. I am mighty sick and tired of the constant thought police saying you cant talk about this, you cant talk about that, you cant mention blacks support Obama, you cant mention they vote for him, you cant mention that white conservatives may still harbor racist views. It is NOT race baiting to mention any of these things. Its not gender baiting to mention that a lot of women like Hillary, a lot of women vote for Hillary, and a lot of white and black males may still harbor feelings that women cant be president. Its not Irish baiting to say that Irish voted for JFK. Its not Catholic baiting to say that Catholics supported JFK. Its not Catholic baiting to say that many Catholics didnt like JFK. Its not religion baiting to say that many religious people didnt like Kerry. And on and on and on. None of it is baiting anyone. Agree or disagree with the statement if you wish, but for gosh sakes lets stop trying to silence people in this free society.
Oh how brave of you Betty! A calculating cynical b**** even! There is no equivalence between Rendell's comment and your nasty, vulgar comment.
Right, Ed...because there are no white voters in Iowa, Nebraska, Maine, Idaho, Kansas, Washington, North Dakota...
Jammer, saying that a comment is stupid isn't an attempt at censorship. Pot, kettle, black. Don't silence us, either. It was a stupid comment coming from THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE IN QUESTION. Its political motivations are so naked, however, that it's impossible to take such a statement on face value. And you know that.
Jammer,
Even if you think that Rendell's statement has some UN-PC truth to it, it is utterly irrelevant to Barack Obama. Rendell was saying that some white conservatives chose to vote for him rather than a black republican. Just because there are some conservative republican voters who will choose a white democrat over a black republican does not mean that white democrats will necessarily choose a white republican (especially this year) over a black democrat. His argument might be applicable if Colin Powell were running, but it is not terribly relevant to Barack Obama. The other thing to keep in mind is that Barack Obama is not just any old black politician. The same rules don't necessarily apply to him. While there are some who are going to portray Rendell's comments as an unspeakable truth, the fact of the matter is that they are democstrably false on the merits. It's one thing to make a comment that appeals to bigotry. It's quite another to make a comment that appeals to bigotry that is just dumb and false. Eddie Rendell needs to spend a little more time at the foot of Bill Clinton, who can teach him how to play racial politics with a little more subtlety and a lot more brains.
Wow, that's some f'd up logic, Fast Eddie. And as far as Bill's "Smoke and Mirrors" comment today... my knee-jerk reaction wasn't that he was talking of stagecraft. My reaction was that he was talking about drugs. Bill just doesn't do anything by accident, you know? It's becoming increasingly difficult for me to remember a time when I respected him, and leapt to his defense.
In Marc's defense, I think he probably writes this blog for an audience that already knows Rendell is in the Hillary camp. I don't think he was trying to hide anything by not mentioning that fact, especially considering the title.
When it comes to politics Ed knows his stuff. He is right here. A lot of working class whites and over 65 whites will not vote for an African American as President. They just won't.
When I read that "smoke and mirrors" line, I thought: he has now crossed the line (if he hadn't already) where he will no longer be able to speak with *any* credibility in favor of Obama in the general election (if he is the nominee). Too young to remember Vice President George H.W. "Voodoo Economics" Bush?
"Right, Ed...because there are no white voters in Iowa, Nebraska, Maine, Idaho, Kansas, Washington, North Dakota..." ... news flash, Democrats win Democratic primaries 100% of the time. So these red states wins mean zero in the general. Secondly, a small slice of liberal activists carry a lot of weight, and they have no problems voting for an African American, but they carry little weight in the general.
Prince Hamlet: Good one. I'm not too young; I voted in that election, but I had forgotten that line. It would be interesting to look back and see how GWB dealt with that comment in the general; I don't remember that either. However, it was a comment on a particular policy prescription that Reagan had put forward, not a thoroughgoing repudiation of the man. WJC is basically saying he thinks Obama is an empty suit. I don't see how he can later put a positive spin on that.
The return of Dick Head Flatts! Now, don't go pinning your sorry ass racist politics on others, Dick Head.
