McCain On Obama

19 Feb 2008 09:08 pm

From his Wisconsin victory speech:

"I will fight every day in this campaign to make sure that Americans are not deceived by an eloquent and empty call for change that promises no more than a holiday from history and a return to the false promises and failed philosophy that trusts in government more than the people."

Wow, how inspiring. Makes me want to volunteer.

A holiday from history? What am I missing?

Someone should fuck this son of a bitch with a shoe in the ass

I like holidays!

Ok, here we go, Obama cultists and their proverbial elegance and dense political arguments... It's a new kind of politics.

What a jerk. Problem for him is that Obama's "empty call for change" is exactly what most voters are desperate for. He won;t win unless he gets it.

Marc, take "if"'s comment off. It insults this site.

Obama has never even ran a corner store, how is he going to run the white house?

What a jerk.

Matt is right: whatever the merits, this is not a winning line for McCain.

Also, perhaps an administrator can delete if's comments?

Sarah P., in all fairness, "if" could be a Huckabee supporter for all we know.

I seriously doubt it, Tractarian. I am a Huckabee voter.

What has McCain run, exactly? I don't see any executive experience in his background, either.

Or in Hillary's, for that matter. If executive experience is the test, I guess you better make a late push for Huckabee.

McCain looked and sounded like a 80 year old grandpa talking same old shit at a family gathering while no one except his wife paying attention, with the youngsters thinking what the f**k is grandpa talking about, he is out of touch with reality and sounds retarded.

Oh, and "holiday from history" is a sound expression from many of us - american patriots who know we no longer live in the pre-9/11 world. Especially when a candidate is willing to befriends with the Ahmadinejads and Chavez of this world.

Try to google it. You'll see it's not exactly an "empty line". But I guess that understandig a metaphor will be to much to Obama followers who only read facebook.

Case closed. :)

I am going to repost again. Apparently we have different perspectives and levels of investment in and of where our country is today. I am not in any way an Obama supporter. I haven't voted yet and I have yet to decide between Hillary and Barack.
By the way, why do I hate McCain, I have 2 elder brothers...ok, One in Iraq (Pete) and one in Afghanistan (Paul). Paul is due home next month. You have to see my parents fidgeting.
I posted as "if" cos I honestly don't know if I have the ability or will to go to a McCain camp and heckle him
That son of a bitch has the got to say 10000 yrs in Iraq.

McCain is the past. He is Bush-Cheney on steriods. He is more pro-war than Bush-Cheney.

He is as clueless as they come.

He talked for 11 minutes and mentioned economy only once in passing. Economy is the top issue for more than 60% people and clueless McCain says nothing about it execpt that the jobs that are gone are not going to come back.

I really wish Romney was still in the race. McCain is getting whopped in almost all 50 states.

Today's SurveyUSA poll gives Obama 50-42 lead over McCain in freaking Texas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might find this strange, Sarah, but I found your comments (that Obama wants to "befriends with" the leaders of Iran and Venezuela, that his supporters "only read facebook" and somehow aren't "american patriots") far more insulting and vile than if's.

We feel for you and your parents. Ignorant people like Sarah are the root cause of the problems created by this admin. They do not have a clue about how terrorism increases and spreads. These ignorants only want to send other people's son and daughters to die in a fraudulent war. The good thing is sensible people are have woken up finally.

Did you notice who was there on stage with Mccain? It was Mike DeWine.. another looser from Ohio who represents past!

MY FRIENDS, McCain represents old and past in every possible way.

On the face of it pretty poor rhetoric. Doesn't stand a chance against Obama's soaring and substantive anthems to the American people.

"Holiday from history" is the empty rhetoric of an ignorant, imperialist world view. Many of us - true patriots - understand that the failed policies of the Bush adminstration and his neocon enablers have only created more problems for this great country. McCain represents more of the same failed policies, a further decline in U.S. power and prestige. We will be spending decades cleaning up after Bush - both domestically and internationally.

Oh what has happened to that shining city upon a hill?

Good lord, to think five years ago I had a bit of affection for McCain. What a graceless, flip-flopping, unprincipled pile you have become - and by the way, ease up on the botox that you are sharing with your very, very, very patriotic trophy wife.

It's awkward when you give a speech and can't move your eyes or eyebrows...

Sarah P., I have never been on facebook.

McCain's implied argument is a doubletake on a single logical fallacy, and I hope you can see why. It tries to use the true statement "you shouldn't trust government more than the people" to bolster the following unrelated claims:

(1) Obama is insincere and will fail to deliver on his promises (could be true, but has nothing to do with trusting government over people), and

(2) it does not matter whether the people in government are honest or good, because government itself is dishonest and bad (patently untrue, since the government is only as good and honest as the people who are in it).

He needed the specious "government versus people" hook for a simple reason: it is a well-worn right-wing tactic to blame government generally, rather than the people who run it. McCain is the people who run it, and every indication is that Obama is sincere about changing how the government is run. Change means McCain and his friends have to go - not exactly an "empty" sentiment when it comes to John McCain.

Yes, John McCain is going to need to start playing his cards, as they are currently stacked against him:

Obama vs. McCain- The Internet Indicators:

It's interesting to hear McCain's "attack" on Obama. Let's face it, McCain vs. Obama will not be a race about policy and issues like the Clinton vs. Obama race. The Republicans and Democrats are on opposite sides of the fence in terms of policy. You either want universal healthcare or you don't; you want the war in Iraq to go on for 100 years or you don't; you want to raise taxes for the wealthy or you don't, etc.
So instead of talking policy, McCain is using what George Lakoff (author of Don't Think of an Elephant) calls framing. TK points this out in his post when he explains how McCain is telling us that government is incompetent and can't deliver. But luckily we can figure out how to respond to this type of framing. For example, has McCain forgotten that the military is part of the government and most people, especially McCain, have deep trust in our military.
Obama, and even Clinton for that matter, will be able to swat aside these old Republican frames. Once again, McCain is playing the same old game, which most of us have figured out.
