Obama's Snatching Up The Superdelegates

22 Feb 2008 04:11 pm

Per the Nation, Sen. Russ Feingold says he's very likely to vote for Obama at the convention.

Since Wisconsin, Obama has gained the support of 10 superdelegates by my counting: 2 DNC members from New Jersey, two congressmen from Wisconsin, Jason Rae, four supers from Ohio and Pennsylvania, and Rep Chet Edwards and Lloyd Doggett of Texas.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, if I recall correctly, has picked up two.

Comments (24)

for whom does the bell toll? it tolls for hillary...

I presume you, as with everyone else, are operating off the list at DemConWatch. In any event, I don't think that count is quite right. One of the NJ supers -- Dana Redd -- was a switch from Clinton, so that cuts into her +2.

According to AP's math in a story going around this afternoon, Obama is +27 (+25 for Obama, -2 for Clinton) over the past two weeks.

Going by the invaluable list at http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/01/superdelegate-list.html it appears that Obama has picked up 13 since Wednesday morning. Clinton picked up one today.

If we extend the count to Tuesday, those numbers become 14-3 Obama-Clinton.

Obama's speech (October, 2002):

Good afternoon. Let me begin by saying that although this has been billed as an anti-war rally, I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances.

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union, and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil. I don't oppose all wars.

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain.

I don't oppose all wars.

After September 11th, after witnessing the carnage and destruction, the dust and the tears, I supported this Administration's pledge to hunt down and root out those who would slaughter innocents in the name of intolerance, and I would willingly take up arms myself to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

I don't oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.

What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income - to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression.

That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.

Now let me be clear - I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity.

He's a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars.

So for those of us who seek a more just and secure world for our children, let us send a clear message to the president today. You want a fight, President Bush? Let's finish the fight with Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, through effective, coordinated intelligence, and a shutting down of the financial networks that support terrorism, and a homeland security program that involves more than color-coded warnings.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure that the UN inspectors can do their work, and that we vigorously enforce a non-proliferation treaty, and that former enemies and current allies like Russia safeguard and ultimately eliminate their stores of nuclear material, and that nations like Pakistan and India never use the terrible weapons already in their possession, and that the arms merchants in our own country stop feeding the countless wars that rage across the globe.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure our so-called allies in the Middle East, the Saudis and the Egyptians, stop oppressing their own people, and suppressing dissent, and tolerating corruption and inequality, and mismanaging their economies so that their youth grow up without education, without prospects, without hope, the ready recruits of terrorist cells.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to wean ourselves off Middle East oil, through an energy policy that doesn't simply serve the interests of Exxon and Mobil.

Those are the battles that we need to fight. Those are the battles that we willingly join. The battles against ignorance and intolerance. Corruption and greed. Poverty and despair.

The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. We may have occasion in our lifetime to once again rise up in defense of our freedom, and pay the wages of war. But we ought not - we will not - travel down that hellish path blindly. Nor should we allow those who would march off and pay the ultimate sacrifice, who would prove the full measure of devotion with their blood, to make such an awful sacrifice in vain.

Let's turn the page,

VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!

This is turning into a perfect storm of Obamamentum. Hillary practically conceded last night, so maybe the end really is near.

According to AP here he's up 25 and she's down 2 in the past couple of weeks.

2 DNC members from New Jersey
Two congressmen from Wisconsin
Jason Rae
Four supers from Ohio and Pennsylvania
Rep Chet Edwards and Lloyd Doggett of Texas

That adds up to 11, dude.

I have heard that the superdelegates may shift all to Hillary if Larry Sinclair proves to be telling the truth. He will be coming to New York on Feb. 26 for a lie detector test. He has alleged that Obama did drugs and had a physical relationship with him. This will be very interesting to see. If he passes the test this story will break in the main stream media. I am looking forward to seeing who is telling the truth here. His videos and interviews have been posted on youtube.

Mike,
Are you insane?

I'm cracking up at Mike's post right now. Seriously man, you start your Friday off w/ a nice dose of acid?

You have heard of the story that the media seems to be suppressing. This is it. They are waiting for enough evidence before reporting it. This is what Bill O'Reilly was talking about when the McCain discussion was underway. Politics and scandal seems to go hand in hand.

This just in: Larry Sinclair has taken the lie detector test today earlier than expected. WhiteHousedotcom will be reporting it on Monday or Tuesday. It will be very interesting to see if he is telling the truth. This guy definitely has guts. I expect Obama to address this if Sinclair passes the test. I would like to see who is telling the truth here.

Hey Mark, They released Rezko's 'clout 'list today and guess who is on it? Reference the Chic Trib..I believe this is just the beginning of whats to come.

Hey, Mike, huge fan of your work. I liked it way before you went mainstream, when you were all hip and underground and went by "Jesse."

Keep on keepin' on, my man.

Haha, not me Jeff Larson. Sounds like a Clinton supporter trying to use my goods in the primary when i'm already looking to the general against Obama.

He's right though, right now it looks like neither Clinton or Obama will be able to win without super delegates. Obama will be leading substantially, of course, so I fully expect the supers not to over-rule the voters. That is unless there is some major Obama scandal that gives them cover.

It would be a shame though. There is so much dirt on Obama that's been piling up i'm looking forward to him being the Dem nominee. The MSM hasn't touched it because up until now its all been puff pieces about the race angle.

That's going to change. It will be Rezko non-stop and gotcha pieces accusing him of hypocrisy.

Obama the Anti Christ? http://www.barackobamaantichrist.blogspot.com. There are 116,000 Google matches for Obama in-experienced Washington rookie as the Antichrist candidate, Pundits” referring to Obama as “the messiah.” the antichrist is also to be a “false messiah,” who tricks everybody Obama supporters "creepy" and "cult-like" Summary: CNN's Costello said audience response at an Obama rally is "a scene some increasingly find not inspirational, but 'creepy,' " quoting columnists who have likened Obama supporters to members of a cult or described their enthusiasm as "creepy." On-screen text during Costello's report read: "OBAMA-MANIA BACKLASH" and "PASSION 'CULT-LIKE' TO SOME." Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer similarly cited other writers to make the same assertion: "ABC's Jake Tapper notes the 'Helter-Skelter cult-ish qualities' of 'Obama worshipers,' what Joel Stein of the Los Angeles Times calls 'the Cult of Obama. We’ve been wondering what’s up with this whole “Obama ‘08!” Media circus, because the guy hasn’t actually done anything but win his first Senate race after Republican Jack Ryan had to drop out. Something to think about before voting for Obama whose wife never proud to be an American until now, or so she says. The Anti-Christ will be a world leader who would come under the disguise of being a world uniter, preach world peace, and would be such a very likeable and unassuming figure; he will achieve all of that. Basically the Anti-Christ is going to kill us with kindness and reveal himself when he gets to the position he wants. That’s close to Osama’s platform; people are beginning to believe it’s him.” The biggest trick the devil ever pulled is convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

1.- He will come as a man of Peace (Obama promises peace in Iraq, defeat for the US)
2.- He will come mounted on a white Female horse(Obama mother is white who had 6 African husbands)
3.- He will come to deceive( Obama says he's a Christian but in fact he was born a Muslim, practices the Islamic religion, prays Friday’s facing Mecca)
4.- He will make himself the most powerful man on earth, if elected
5.- He will try to destroy the Jewish People and Israel( Obama has said he loves the Arabs specially the Palestinians, hates Israel and Jews. Admires Hitler, Osama etc)
6.- He will present himself as good and righteous but in fact he's Satan himself. Violence is in his heart
7.- Obama will help Al Qaida in its evil projects.
8.- Barack Hussein Obama is the “King of the South” predicted in the Bible.(Daniel .11, Kenya is south of Jerusalem)
9.- Obama comes to implant muslim Sharia Law upon America.

Barack “Hussein” Obama scares the bejesus out of me! Why? He’s a smooth talker and, seems to be coated with Teflon. Sadly, the most obvious disqualifier in our new world of terror, a middle-eastern name, is the one people seem the most willing to ignore.

Its no suprise that Black superdelegates are changing to racist obama, why? SKIN COLOR PEROID! they loose ALL credibility as a politican for the people when doing so. I urge voters to keep them in mind when their seats come up for re-election. They are a perfect example of the CHANGE NEEDED OBAMA touts. These black politicans CANNOT be trusted! Black voters are choosing black candidate based on skin color not merit and not what he can do to help our failing country. What a serious shame...we are giving away another election. Thank the media! Obamas speeches address just black voters. The same person who claims he is not running on race? It sure isn’t experience or who is best to run this country. Don’t believe it will work in the general election He truly had divided voters since SC win. No one is so naive as not to think that black resentment towards whites could render Senator Obama unelectable. NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE MEDIA TO SCRUTINIZE OBAMA LIKE THEY HAVE DONE TO EVERYOTHER NON-BLACK CANDIDATE. MEDIA HAS FAILED AMERICAN VOTERS

Is Obama the resurrected body of zombie Ronald Reagan? Signs point to YES!

What a shame. Ambinder never looks at his comments, and he's letting this blog be a tool for smears.

Those are smears? I thought Marc was holding a contest for best Hillary Fan Fiction.

Thanks for 411 Mike.

This Larry Sinclair guy seems honest. We'll see. I don't write anything off. I hope to hear more about it soon. Apparently he took the polygraph lie detector test last night.

Superdelegates aren't the only thing Obama is snapping up.

http://acropolisreview.com/2008/02/endorsements-of-barack-obama.html

Just a note, if the states were awarded as they are in the general election this would be the tally the pundits would be talking about. An Obama win on March 4th would be if he swept all 4 states and a Clinton win would be if she won Ohio and Texas. The number in brackets is including Michigan and Florida.
Now:
Obama 190 electoral college votes
Clinton 161 (195)
Obama win March 4th:
Obama 251
Clinton 161 (195)
Clinton win March 4th:
Obama 197
Clinton 214 (249)

The voters are speaking loud and clear.

Primaries or caucuses have already been held in 36 of 50 states. Obama is ahead in the popular vote, and has won twice as many contests as Hillary Clinton. He also leads Clinton in pledged delegates. His appeal among independent voters makes him a formidable general election candidate.

But if Clinton is nominated, the race will be too close to call against McCain.

Enough is enough. We are a coalition of voters urging the Democratic superdelegates to support Barack Obama.

www.votersforobama.com

Take five minutes and call or e-mail an undecided super delegate in your state.

Working together, we can make a difference by letting superdelegates know how many of their constituents want Obama to be the Democratic presidential nominee.
