Patti Solis Doyle Steps Down As Clinton Campaign Manager

10 Feb 2008 08:34 pm

A sudden switching of quarterbacks in the middle of the playoffs is not what any campaign needs; there's no question that Patti Solis Doyle's resignation will produce a spate of negative stories that no campaign likes to handle.

Was Solis Doyle, who has served in Hillaryland since 1992, shown the door? Or did she decide to leave?

Hillary Clinton's inner circle tends to make decisions based collaboratively, and interviews with campaign advisers and aides suggest that the departure was both a needed turning of the page and a recognition by Solis Doyle that she could best serve her family, and Clinton, by taking a different role.

"In part, this was Patti's choice. She knew that when things start to get funky, you have to make, for appearance sake, some changes," a senior campaign adviser who was briefed on the decision and who is close to Solis Doyle said.

Importantly, aides stressed that Solis Doyle will begin to travel with Clinton, arguably giving her even greater access to the candidate's ear. She plans to spend time helping Clinton in Texas, where she has close ties, and will appear as a surrogate on Clinton's behalf.

One campaign adviser, asserting that Clinton still has enormous confidence in Solis Doyle, noted that Clinton has gone out of her way to praise Solis Doyle in campaign conference calls since Iowa.

In way, though, the departure was anti-climactic. Solis Doyle, whose serve to Clinton began in 1992, had survived three separate coup attempts, the latest one being shortly after Iowa, when Clinton considered asking Williams to assume the title of "campaign coordinator." Twice, advisers to Bill Clinton have tried to oust her -- one in January, before the campaign officially began, and once in April, after Barack Obama raised more money than the vaunted Clinton machine.

The chief complaints were several. One was that Solis Doyle's insistence that Clinton not begin to run for president until the she formally decided to run had put her at a tremendous fundraising disadvantage. Another was that Solis Doyle, a native of Chicago, did not fully anticipate the threat that Barack Obama would pose and therefore did not come up with a strategy to contain his candidate. A third was that Solis Doyle was not adept at managing what amounted to a 500 person corporation. A fourth was that, in managing the corporation, the care and feeding of important Democrats -- the large universe of Clinton advisers outside the campaign -- fell by the wayside.

Clinton heard these complaints -- some of them having merit, others not -- and stuck by Solis Doyle. Solis had as many admirers, including much of the senior staff she hired, including communications director Howard Wolfson, chief field planner Karen Hicks, and deputy campaign manager Mike Henry among them.

Campaign advisers said that Doyle, who had spent 18-hour days in Iowa for a month, took the loss in Iowa personally. She was visibly unhappy and did not show up at the campaign's headquarters in Virginia the day after the defeat. Since then, Williams has been a larger and larger presence, even working from Solis Doyle's office when Solis Doyle was absent.

Williams participated in Solis Doyle's wedding and is said to be as close to Clinton as Solis Doyle is -- the type of staffer who can channel Clinton's voice and not be questioned by subordinates.

A second friend of Solis Doyle said that the two "had been working toward this transition."

People familiar with the decision cited as a factor that Solis Doyle has very young children and did not expect the active phase of the primary campaign to last this long, and that she had always anticipated transitioning to a different role in the spring. She was dead tired and missed her family.

Advisers admit to some tensions between Solis Doyle and the larger circle of advisers who Hillary Clinton consulted with after Iowa, including advisers to Bill Clinton who began to take a more prominent role.

The final decision, aides said, was made early this morning.

The timing is unusual. After Tuesday, Clinton will essentially be tied with Barack Obama, delegate-wise. She's just come off her biggest fundraising week ever. Clinton is thought to have an edge in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Answering questions about a campaign shake-up, even if it wasn't a shake-up, is not what the campaign wanted to be doing right now.

You're really buying the line that she "wants to spend more time with her family"?

Answering questions about a campaign shake-up, even if it wasn't a shake-up, is not what the campaign wanted to be doing right now.

How is this not fundamentally a shakeup? Even in the broadest definition of the word, this was a shake-up. And it seems like, given she'll continue to travel w/Clinton and continue to consult, fairly messy still. But then, they seem to have split duties (Solis Doyle & Williams that is) so persumably they will have come to some understanding on how this work from here on out.

Wasn't she the child actor who played Punky Brewster?

"After Tuesday, Clinton will essentially be tied with Barack Obama, delegate-wise."

Um, if the polls are to be believed, only if you include "superdelegates". And why would you do something like that?

"Clinton is thought to have an edge in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas."

First, thought by whom?

Second, this is a delegate contest. If Obama continues to load up on pledged delegates in the other contests, then Clinton will need not just moral victories, but rather blowout wins in all of three of those states to catch up. Do the unnamed people who think Clinton has an edge in those states also think she is on her way to blowout wins?

In short, I am pretty darn sure the "superdelegates" and money folks are starting to do the math and wondering if Clinton can turn this around. I assume those people are the intended audience for this firing (and let's not kid ourselves about this: Solis was fired). And the message behind the firing is that the Clinton Campaign recognizes the problems with their current strategy, and they are going to try to address those problems.

Solis is old news. The campaign will just move on. I wish Jim Webb would take a stand.

The timing is unusual. After Tuesday, Clinton will essentially be tied with Barack Obama, delegate-wise. She's just come off her biggest fundraising week ever. Clinton is thought to have an edge in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Yes! This has been the best week ever for Clinton! Who could dispute that!

And people say that Obama supporters are drinking the Kool-Aid. Yowzah.

Good try Marc - I'm sure the superdelgates are not impressed with the way Hillary has run her campaign.

How much further down can she go? The average voter is thinking gosh, she ran out money and had to loan herself $5 Mil just to come out even on Super Tuesday, she lost the next 5 primaries (counting the Virgin Islands) in a landslide AND she had to replace her campaign manager because things were going so badly and they didn't think the contest would last this long. Not confidence building to say the least.

So she's finally tapped into the internet to raise some money. Welcome to the 21st Century - but again she's way behind the learning curve - not ahead of it. That's not something I want in President - already had 8 years of it - thank you.

Wow. I've lost interest in defending Marc. It's like the Germans said about knowing that World War Two in Europe was coming to an end; that they knew the war would soon be over because the Reich's glorious victories kept getting closer and closer to Berlin.

The not-a-shakeup shakeup (so "firing" is off the table, even though it's obviously what she would do in this situation and obviously what happened?) is one more strand coming apart, one more fray.

Barack Obama is defeating Hillary Clinton. He's doing it incrementally but he's doing it. For all the praise heaped upon them by the pundits, surely there can be little question that the Obama campaign has completely outplayed the Clinton team at virtually every stage of the game. A campaign based on hubris is slowly disintegrating in the face of a campaign based on community, on the ability of ordinary people to change the world no matter how long the odds might sometimes look if we work together. The Obama campaign is the embodiment of the Obama promise, of the possibility for "the audacity of hope" to move from being an idealist's words to being a clarion call for generational, social, and political realignment and even reawakening.

The contest is nowhere near over, but the state of play right now is clear. One camp is convincing people that they can be a part of something both inspiring and real. Accusing the Obama movement of being easily duped chumps hopped up on false hopes isn't idealistic or realistic. It's just dismal politics, and at this point the entire Clinton campaign is the single more pure reminder this side of John McCain of every reason that Americans, independents and Republicans included, want a fresh start to the twenty-first century.

the departure was both a needed turning of the page and a recognition by Solis Doyle that she could best serve her family, and Clinton, by taking a different role.

Best serve her family? I'm sorry, but what does that mean here?

Doyle is still working full time, traveling for a presidential campaign, so it's not like she's going to have much more time to be at home. So how is she better serving her family by moving to a subordinate position in the same organization? What do they have to do with it at all? It's kind of spooky line.

Here's a real story: According to the Baltimore Sun:

Over the last seven years, Clinton had raised $175 million for her reelection and her presidential campaign. But Solis Doyle didn't tell Clinton that there was next to no cash on hand until after the New Hampshire primary.

"We were lying about money," a source said. "The cash on hand was nothing."

In turn, Clinton didn't tell Solis Doyle that she was lending her own money to keep the campaign afloat. Solis Doyle found out third-hand.
---end of article citation

Now if this is how Hillary runs a campaign, how can she be expected to lead a White House? Apparently, there is no trust within the Clinton camp, only lying, deception, etc. Plus, why did Hillary not tell anyone about the campaign loan? Was she trying to keep it a secret and violate campaign finance laws? I would not trust any fundraising figures from the Clintons again.

Remember, also, that even Bill Clinton's White House was not run very well. So this myth that at least Hillary is a competent manager is just that: a big fat myth.

A campaign based on hubris is slowly disintegrating in the face of a campaign based on community, on the ability of ordinary people to change the world no matter how long the odds might sometimes look if we work together.

This may sound like naive idealism, but the fact of the matter is that you're right, V. Today, in a working class, white, post-industrial city of 25,000 in the middle of Ohio, a group of about 50 people gathered at the local library to talk about how to get the word out about Obama. I don't dispute that Hillary has fans and supporters, but she relied on name-recognition and regional political support to win the primary. Obama is getting people - real, live people - to give up their time and money to try to convince their friends and neighbors to vote for Obama. That's why you see the shift in this race. It's not the media. It's the fact that Obama is good at organizing communities - the difference now is that he's not doing it in Chicago, he's doing it across the country.

The cynical part of me (i.e the part of me that has been trained, for better or worse, to wonder about the Clintons' motives) has noticed that the Clintons have a lot invested lately in the notion that their campaign in flailing. Between the 5 mil, Saturday's blowouts and Solis-Doyle's resignation, the campaign is seemingly content to allow the pundits think they are in crisis mode. They are also smart enough to realize that -- absent Obama getting a massive burst of momentum -- they are going to win some primaries in the near future. This allows them to create a comeback narrative of Hillary picking herself off the canvas. The media will gobble that up and it creates new momentum on her behalf.

Looks like the unrest and disorganization within the Clinton campaign is worse than imagined. Can she really weather the pro-Obama storm until March 4?

Dude, you're seriously starting to read like Hugh Hewitt. Or the Iraqi Minister of Information. Clinton is getting absolutely slaughtered on a front her campaign never anticipated being a front and you're putting out a "wanted to spend more time with her family" spin while touting Clinton's strong hand? Seriously, this site is reading like a candidate's in house blog.

I think that there is another potential reason for this change. SInce this is going to be an awful Clinton month, they are going to have their backs to the wall in TX and OH and will probably go very harshly negative right after the wisconsin primary. Having a black campaign manager will help give them cover for the next wave of race-tinged politics about to come. I hope I am wrong, however.

Firing the campaign manager is like firing the jockey because the horse is lame.

Why are you Clinton supporters continuing to give her money? She obviously has plenty of money of her own. Let the Clintons waste their money on this hopeless campaign. Why throw away yours?

Is this demonstration of high-handedness, bickering, dishonesty and Clintonesque shenanigans surprising? There were 8 years for us to wrestle with as the damage to the Democratic party took place. Is our country not worth more than another season of trouble in the white house? If Hillary cannot control her little election team what would the nation be facing with her in the presidential role? Are we not worthy of more than that?

Thank you for the reference to the Iraqi Minister of Information (above). That is exactly what ran through my head when I read this post. I googled his name- Mr. Naji Al-Hadithi meet Marc Ambinder.

What I don't understand is why they released this on a day when they were getting thumped again.

If they win, it will get buried amidst the good news. Now it becomes the icing of the narrative of the weekend. It is a hook for reporters to build their stories around.

As for Marc and his prognosticating, it shows there is hope for all of us little folks who do it for free.

"Spend more time with her family." Puh-lease. Marc, you know politicos, you know what "family people" operatives are. You must. They care about as much about their kids as they do furniture. That's why many of them never had any.

I am a Democrat who happens to know plenty of Democratic operatives. They either have no children or have their spouses take care of them or even drag them around with them when need be to fun places like statehouse offices (afternoon) and fundraising dinners (evening).

I don't know Solis so I suppose I'm being unfair. But for ALL the operatives I know, being closer to family is only an issue when they fail and need shoulders to cry on. The selfishness of these people only ends when THEY happen to be in need. The smart ones never have kids.

I think that the way candidates are handling their campaigns says much about the way they will handle the Presidency.

Obama has found innovative ways to raise jaw dropping sums of money to reach specified goals and Clinton ran into debt...in spite of the fact that she should have needed much less money than Obama since she had the unbelievable advantages of immediate name recognition and an extremely well-liked former President for a spouse.

Obama has organized an immensely successful grass roots campaign all over the country and Clinton was incapable of choosing, on the first try, the right person for the most important position in her campaign. Reminds me of Brownie, Wolfowitz and Gonzales. Part of being a good President is choosing the best people for important positions.

I think the voters in this country have concrete evidence showing it is Obama who will not only be ready to lead on Day One of the Presidency, but who will also be able to do so effectively. Hillary doesn't look so ready right now.

Dear MarcAmbinder, You are a right wing knee jerk. You only post negative comments about Mrs. Clinton. You must have an agenda for doing this. Let me tell you, she is going win the White house bid. You are going to be very sad. However, you are a very sad and negative person anyway. You must not be able to sleep at night.

"Solis Doyle was not adept at managing what amounted to a 500 person corporation. A fourth was that, in managing the corporation, the care and feeding of important Democrats -- the large universe of Clinton advisers outside the campaign -- fell by the wayside."

Hm, isn't HR Clinton responsible for an operation that has had these problems for so long? And isn't running a staff of around 500 people while keeping outside power centers happy pretty much what the White House has to do? Isn't this the minimum standard for a functioning Presidency?

Press accounts like this -- if accepted -- are extremely damaging to HR Clinton's main justification for being elected President.

Well, with that kind of intelligent, clear, and reasoned analysis of the above post, it seems downright baffling that Clinton supporters are having a difficult time convincing others of her merit.

Pretty funny that anyone could read this as an anti-Clinton post.

The media is so predictable. There is nothing to say about Obama, because he has no track record because he hasn't been in politics long enough!OPEN YOUR EYES! OBAMA IS OVERRATED! THERE'S NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT HIM BECAUSE HE HAS NO HISTORY, NO TRACK RECORD!! WOULD YOU HIRE SOMEONE WITH NO WORK HISTORY? HELL NO. WAKE UP,WAKE UP, WAKE UP, AMERICA, BEFORE YOU MAKE ANOTHER HUGE MISTAKE!!

Paul, you sound just like some of the Hillary supporters around here! I agree that they can be a bit silly in their obsessive repostings of tired talking points, but mocking them like that is sort of...gauche.

I love how everyone on the blogs always only sees things through their own candidates propaganda. This is a serious shake-up in the Clinton camp. That said, Obama still does not know what will happen to the Florida and Michigan delegates. I would imagine that the one thing that the Obama momentum could do is let them put their guard down or their eye off the ball. The Clintons have already done that early in the campaign when they didn't size up the threat Obama posed accurately, the Obama campaign if they get a February filled with victories could be suprised in March. Caucuses are very unrepresentative of the true electorate. People with responsibilities, jobs, kids, etc. are unlikely to have the time to get out to caucus, while young people are fired up and willing to go caucus. Obama has ussed this to his advantage, but this is not an accurate depiction of the kind of voters who will turn out in the general election. If Clinton take Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and then ends up winning Florida since the 3 candidates were on that ballot, she could pose a significant threat. Unfortunately for all the idealist Obama supporters what we are all engaged in is politics. In politics there is only one strategy: winning. This thing is far from over. In some ways it is as though we are watching two trains heading straight for eachother and waiting to find out if one of them will still be accepting passengers after they collide at full speed. Luckily the Republican train ran off the rails long ago, so as long as one of our trains is still running we will win.

"It's not about the money." Translation: it's about the money.

"Leaving to spend more time with your family." Translation: I REALLY screwed up.

I think I finally understand the Hillary commercial with the parachutist plummeting to earth: it was Patti Solis Doyle representing the state of the Clinton campaign.

The way her campaign has been run does beg the question as to how effective an executive HRC would be.

"That said, Obama still does not know what will happen to the Florida and Michigan delegates."

I don't know much, but if the Clinton campaign tries to win the nomination on the backs of the delegates from Florida and Michigan, we will have a serious problem. Remember, we were around in 2000 when Gore lost Florida to Bush via the Supreme Court. Now Obama might lose the nomination based upon two primary elections where it was agreed beforehand he couldn't campaign (much less count the result)? His name wasn't even on Michigan's ballot!

If the Democratic party takes this nomination from Obama based upon those two states, I don't know that I will ever vote again. Honestly...

If Hillary is having trouble running her campaign how can we expect her to run the White House? I guess hubby will do it! Yikes!

Black Power!! Obama '08.

That white girl has simply got to go away to bake some cookies or something. Oh wait she doesnt bake. lol

I have kids, and a job, and I went to the caucus in Washington this weekend. It took me roughly 5 minutes to walk there, 5 minutes to check in and write down which candidate I supported and 5 minutes to walk back home. My wife actually stayed about an hour. Some friends of ours watched our kids for the 15 minutes I was gone. From our block, of the 4 families with kids (not including us), 3 of them had both parents there (with and without their kids). The fourth is a Republican family. In all, over half of the people on our block came to the caucus.

People are coming to the caucuses because they are excited about Barack Obama. It's the same reason he's raising money hand over fist. What this country needs is a great leader, somebody who can inspire the country to come together, and somebody who can inspire the world to work with us. It's true that he has no executive-branch experience. Are we to understand that Hillary does? Because of being first lady? Maybe it was her sweeping health-care reform that has solved all our problems.

Barack Obama has shown through this campaign that he knows how to execute effectively, and I believe that he will surround himself with highly-capable, competent people. People all over the country are excited by the potential of his being our next President, not just young people with no responsibilities.

Andrew

It's just a way to bring Michelle Williams to the forefront. Attention is given to Patti Solis Doyle, a Hispanic woman, and Michelle Williams, a black woman equally as being top advisors to Hillary.

This contrasts with the CULT CANDIDACY which features (Adolph Hitler look alike) David Axelrod, and PLOUFFE! (you're a frog, again), two chainsmoking old CHICAGO SOUTH SIDE hacks who have been swimming in the political muck over there since Bill Daley was running the show.

This blof is going downhill fast and it is obvious from the postings over the last few days. The readers have been pointing this out in their comments and Marc seems to not only have gone blind and deaf but also appears to be eating the droppings from the HRC gravy train.
Assume for the sake of theorizing that Obama raised about 1.3 times what Hillary raised from January 2006 to the beginning of February.
And assume also that he spent 0.75 times what the HRC campaign spent from January 06 to Feb. 07.
Then show me how the fucking hell she had to dig into her pocket to stave off an across the board Feb 5th demolition. Is someone siphoning the money into his/her pocket? Corruption, embezzlement..something stinks here and we all know it.
If she represents the top 75% of the kind of politicians we elect, then no wonder about those deficits and national debt.

It is very concerning that a candidate with so much experience (HRC) at running a campaign (Bill and Hills) has so poorly run her own. Where's all the experience we have been hearing about. Experience is only valuable if you can implement it sucessfully. What troubles me the most about the Clinton campaign is that she only surrounds herself with faithful loyalist who have been with her since the Arkansas days. The trouble with that strategy is that these advisors (like lobbyists) only tell the candidate what they want to hear, not what they need to hear (ie: we're out of money).

HRC's campaign reminds me of the Bush administration. Bush only surrounds himself with loyalists, and as soon as the loyalist tries to offer up the truth, they are cast to the wolves. I see such strong parallels between the leadership styles of Bush and HRC that it is alarming to me.

How Sen. Obama has run his campaign is very indicative of how he would lead as president: With confidence, with innovation, with input from all of us, with eloquence and with brilliance.

Team Billary had to shake up their campaign after placing 3rd in Iowa, loan themselves $5,000,000 and now this. I thought Hillary was supposed to be, "ready on day 1".

Hillary has been protecting the rights of women for the past 35 years. I was EXTREMELY enthusiastic when she mentioned the other night that bringing back the ERA Amendment to the forefront of discussion was one of her priorities.

Hilary Fever - Catch it!!

"She knew that when things start to get funky, you have to make, for appearance sake, some changes," a senior campaign adviser who was briefed on the decision and who is close to Solis Doyle said.

Funky? As in smelly? The word carries all the Clintonian vagueness we've come to expect. In fact, "I want to help people get out of their funk," got Bill in a bind back in 1995.

This has Willie's fingerprints all over it. They can't really shitcan her as long as she's still Mexican-American and a woman -- the embodiment of Hillary's core constituency. So, even though she's "dead tired" and out of the loop, they'll keep her around for Texas. Yeah, I can see how tactics like this can take on a foul smell.

Remember how Hillary tried to trash Obama because he didn't view his role in the White House as head of the beauracracy? Hill then went on to say that one of her priorities would be to run the federal goverment like a hands-on operating officer.

Well, if she can't run a "corporation of 500," how the hell is she going to effectively manage a "corporation" with millions of employees?

Just another example of how her vapid assertions of experience and readiness make Obama's talk of transformation and hope look like the hardest headed realism.

Marc, I like your blog and it's very fair. I find every political site is inundated with the same kind of comments here. Crazy how all this talk of hope, change, and inspiration is inspiring all this venom, isn't it?

PS - If we're concerned about management and finances I suggest people look into Obama's burn rate because he has gone through a LOT of money and not spent it all wisely. I wonder how much cash was poured into a South Carolina race that wasn't close. He's lucky his supporters are disproportionately from the wealthier classes compared to Hillary's.

Samuel Blackburn: Decent troll attempt.

Apart from the fact that the phrase "Black Power" hasn't been uttered by an actual black person since the '70s, the fact that NO CLINTON DETRACTORS are playing the gender card against her, and you kinda showed your cards but subconsciously putting "black" in your fake name.

But a decent tactical move, I guess, in trying to smear Obama supporters. I give you 4 out of 10.

If the Democratic party takes this nomination from Obama based upon those two states, I don't know that I will ever vote again. Honestly...

This is the truest thing I've heard. If the Clintons attempt to use the Florida and Michigan delegates the democratic electorate will be so divided the rebuplicans will win and they should... remember we thought we had it sewn up in 2004 dont be so sure....

The key here is you know nothing about the Solis Doyle family Mr. David Jones. So, before you speak you might want to have your facts straight! Both Jim and Patti are hands on parents and both work. Unlike those people you think they are they are very involved in their children's lives. How many parent do you know that have careers like hers or his and one parent is home every night with their children. They are far from stupid for having children.

This blog presents mostly salient points and good reasoning. There's a litany of reasons to support Obama and distrust the Clinton campaign. But let's not waste time preaching to the choir. We all need to sign up on Obama's website, call voters in Texas and Ohio, contribute what we can, and help insure that hope becomes reality. If you, or your Obama supporting friends speak Spanish you may be of even greater assistance.

No, I don't work for the campaign. I'm part of Obama's demographic; 40+, liberal, college educated white male. Reading 'Dreams From My Father' originally inspired me over a year ago.

No one is without faults and issues. But this man is a principled leader with the background and work ethic to help unite this country and lead the world toward greater peace and cooperation.

He's lucky his supporters are disproportionately from the wealthier classes compared to Hillary's.

Um, you do know Hillary has more max donors (who gave 2,300 for the primary) than Obama does, right?

Hint: people who drop $2300 for an election? Generally not middle-class.

Hillary, you cannot manage a campaign and finances? How can you manager a country and be ready on day one? With all your supposed experience? That really beats me

d g:
I suggest people look into Obama's burn rate because he has gone through a LOT of money and not spent it all wisely. I wonder how much cash was poured into a South Carolina race that wasn't close.

Earth to d g: This is a race for delegates. You're correct that South Carolina "wasn't close," though you seem to have conveniently forgotten that polls had Clinton far ahead there until shortly before the primary. Regardless, in the race for delegates, Obama's 55%-27% win (in which he immediately netted 13 delegates over Clinton) was in fact much more valuable than a 50.5%-49.5% win would have been. So your example of an "unwise" expenditure was in fact... wise.

Your failure to understand that simple fact does not do wonders for your credibility.

Me, I presume Obama's burn rate has been considerable--and I've given him $200 thus far. But there's nothing wrong with a high burn rate, if you win. And don't look now, but Obama is winning.

Robert Ethan:
The new campaign manager is Maggie Williams, not Michelle Williams. Michelle Williams is the tragic widowish ex to the late Heath Ledger.

Clinton is ahead in polls in Texas, Ohio and others.

I bet Hillary Clinton would make most of you haters look like idiots if you went one on one with her so just shut up.

And "Black Power". Give me a break. Obama's dad must not have belived that since Barack's mom is white.

I am so sick of all this trash talk about Hillary. Support who you want to support. If you all are so confident he is going to win, then why are you wasting your time talking crap about Hillary?

Get a life. . .

I'm concerned about the possibility of many illegal immigrants voting for Hillary in Texas. I know there are thousands of fake SS and charges of identity theft in Texas. Any one on here from Texas? Are yu hearing anything about proper identification etc?

Solis Doyle is months away from rewriting history (if HRC in fact won the democratic nominee) and her best reason for leaving is: I want to spend more time with my family? Come on.

Obama's father was not born African American. He was Kenyan and immigrated to the U.S.

And Obama is a descendent of slave owners, not slaves, through his mother.

But so what? Clinton is better on the issues.

The first couple of posts are retarded. This is a very well written and neutral article. Also the truth is obama has only been on the scene since 2004 and hasn’t passed any revolutionary legislation. Essentially he made a good speech in the 2004 national convention, he’s black and good looking, he speaks so well (chris rock bring in the pain stand up routine comes to mind) and his ambiguous nature allows the anti-hillary support to make him out into anything they want him to be. When your vague you can be everything to everybody. I use to like obama more than hillary but when I started to examine why I began to realize that the media has just been shoving him down my throat. They use to call him the rock star on the campaign trail. I am so sick of the media interfering with our democary, I like to think I’m a reasonably educated person and to think that I would vote for a first term senator who hasn’t proven himself in anything has me in awe of the power of network TV like MSNBC which is clearly rooting for obama.

To Samuel Blackburn:
"...black power; white girl...baking cookies..."

Please. Your comments and their intent are out of order. I support Mr. Obama and know that any demeaning references to race/gender would not be embraced.

Hillary is a skunk, pure and simple.

To raregar67: I guess it takes one to know one and I can smell you from here

To Mike: rock on. . .

How anyone can believe that someone who has ONLY 4 years of experience can lead our country needs to put the crack pipe down. . .

Do you all rember Obama and followers referring to Obama as being like Martin Luther King, Jr. ? Well, I just found out that Rev Jim Jones of The Peoples Temple was also compared to King, and that he won The Glade Martin Luther King, Jr, Humanitarian Award..In attendance was former California Jerry Brown and members of Carters Transition Team..NAACP then Pres. Joe Hall praised Jones for his inspiring words giving hope to those in need..Also, Jones was a politician. We all know what happened to Jones followers .Do your research people!! Dont take my word for it!1 Get your Kool aid ready!!!

if you want to know where Barack stands on the issues, download his "Blueprint for Change" and he'll let you know.

Solis Doyle has a 9 yr old and a 5 yr old. look up the excellent article on her in La Latina. There are still 9 months to go in this campaign and she has ben putting in 18 hour days for a very long time. Many women out there with very young children know that sometimes the sacrifice of this knd of job can have a real detrimental effect on their children, so I believe she's made a choice, knowing she's splitting the hairs too thin and not being able to give 100% to either job and both are suffering, so she chose the most important job to give the most attention to. She can still fly out to campaign from time to time and work from home, but know she's leaving her former job in good hands, since Williams was HRC's White House Cheif when Bill was President.
In any case, this contest is going to go to the convention and be a real dogfight.
By the way, I'm a 70 year old South Carolinian and I personally called the DNC in Wash to protest the theft of the votes from Michigan and Florida both before their primaries and after. Sen Obama chose to take his name from the Mich ballot but not the Florida one, but Hillary was the only candidate to go their after their primary and thank them for voting. I'm with Julian Bond of the NAACP. these votes should count and their delegates seated. We are talking about 3plus MILLION people! They have already voted and the cost of a do-over should not be taken out of their pockets. We're supposed to live in a democracy for God's sake--the process is already complicatd beyond belief. Does it need to be more shredded?
And I am mad as hell because the media has been spinning this election and doing their best to determine it's outcome with their edited bits of sound bites and so-called paid expert pundits. Is anyone using this wonderful tool called the internet to do their research and find out as much about the issues as possible from as many sources as they can. I've lived through several presidential campaigns in my lifetime, and I can still go back to find out things that I should've known about way back when I first started to vote.
WAKE UP PEOPLE-DO YOUR RESEARCH! Then make the best choice you know how. But believe this--EVERY vote should count--its the American way--and God bless us all!

I almost forgot--the Senator from Florida has the very best idea on how to rotate the primaries so that every state will get a chance to be in a bloc that is first, and so on and so on.

I'm an independent voter and I have not made up my mind yet. However, I do have concerns about how people, Democrat's in particular, are looking at the candidates.

The whole country knows the negatives about Hillary Clinton. What about Obama's negatives? I suggest people really take a hard look at his background - www.unfilteredopinion.com

I'm not saying not to vote for Obama. I'm just saying read every thing you can about him and then make your decision. Don't just read his book and go to his web site. Check out the other stuff. Is it true? I don't know, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

For example:

1) I have no problem with some one going to his church (www.tucc.org). But I do have a problem with a person running for President attending a church that bills itself as "unashamedly black" with a "non-negotiable commitment to Africa".

Obama supporter or not, you have to admit that if that was a White candidate attending a church that was "unashamedly white" it would be all over the news.

2) His church's magazine gives a Lifetime Achievement Award to the racist Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam. Obama says he doesn't agree with the award, but why would you stay at a church that gives the award. By staying, you are basically sanctioning their decision. If he "really" did not like it, trust me the church would not have given the award.

3) What is the extent of Obama's relationship with Farrakhan. A friend pointed out to me that the Illinois State Senate seat that Obama held covered the Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. This neighborhood is dominated by Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. NO ONE wins that State Senate seat with out the blessing of Farrakhan.

4) Does he really have Nation of Islam members on his Senate and campaign staff. I would have a problem wih that.

5) How is Obama about change? Doesn't every politician running for office say that? If Obama is so much about "change", why is his top campaign staff and advisors the same old Washington insiders from previous Democratic regimes?

All of the candidates have flaws, some more than others. I'm just asking you to read all you can about the candidates before you vote for them. Do not vote for Obama because he inspires you. Vote for Obama because he has the right plan with the right details to get the job done. Inspiration alone, is not going to get a darn thing passed with the 435 members of Congress. That's trench warfare.

I guess I should identify myself as an African-American since this campaign is shaping up to be about race also.

Why do you think Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan and the others have been so quiet and not seen on TV as much? Some White people hate them so much and they don't want Obama to get painted with that brush.

Female surrogates usually go down in flames--it is the nature of the job

For anyone who has every worked for a major elected official...the Patti Solis-Doyle exit scenario fallout is clear. Solis was fired, but has to behave as though she left on her own. There is unspoken understanding among staffers who work for high profiled elected officials that you leave smiling and lying about why you left if you ever want to work in this town again. The reason Solis-Doyle lasted so long is that elected officials honor loyalty above competence any day. Also Hillary has a reputation for being NOT the nicest of bosses...thus similar to most politicians, Hillary found one person who could function as her right hand. Solis-Doyle was the one chosen to run the campaign with an iron fist and to keep the infighting among staff to a low roar. Elected officials always find a surrogate to deal with their fellow employees. This surrogate maintains a protective barrier between the Boss and the other employees. This is particularly needed by elected officials ---they simply cannot afford to have a disgruntled employee? Legislative and campaign staffers have access to all sorts of confidential information about the politician's day to day life. Should a staffer feel mistreated by the official, there is no telling what they could leak or say publicly about their employer. However if they are angry at the boss’s surrogate, then they often tell themselves the surrogate is the bitch or SOB and surely the Boss doesn’t know they are being mistreated. It’s a rationalization that works for everybody. If the truth be told most of the people working for major politicians and who want a long term career in politics--- don’t want a throw down with the boss… because the old career is would end in a flash and no other elected official would hire you, especially if your former boss is a Clinton. It took an earthquake to dislodge Solis-Doyle from that campaign…no matter the continuous poor management decisions. That’s why her twin (in level of years and experience with Hillary) Maggie Williams was brought it. Solis Doyle may travel with Hillary for the Texas and Ohio vote and to save face. However, for all intent and purposes she is gone from the Clinton inner circle and will never be trusted in the same way again. The next time you see her after the election or Hillary’s defeat is as a consultant on Latino affairs. Her community will embrace her, but the Clintons will only to the extent it keeps her from spilling what she knows…and she will figure out another career and write the tell all book when Hillary retires. It’s the price you pay for playing the game so close to the flame. The real problem is that most of the people like Solis Doyle can’t handle the power and they make more enemies among the staff then need be. It’s the ego thing about being the gate-keeper. The ride is great…but she is gone…her saving grace is that she knows too much for the Clintons to totally dump

Doyle must have brain tumors too --for Backing Obama---who was separated from Curious George at birth!!! bananas anyone!!!
