Here's a first look at the centerpiece of the AFL-CIO's multi million dollar campaign to bracket Sen. John McCain ahead of the general election.

Television ads, radio ads, print ads, Internet ads, canvassing, testimonials, literature and surrogate appearances are planned. Incidentally, although a figure of $53m has been tossed about, that number is what the AFL is planning to devote to the 2008 campaign in total, not solely to bracketing Sen. McCain.

AFL-CIO political director Karen Ackerman will brief reporters on a noon conference call today.

And by "bracket" McCain you mean exactly...What?

I *think* English is my first language, and I read a lot of political material, but I've never seen this usage.

Then again, you're the only person I know who uses "optics" to mean "perception" so unabashedly, which makes you kind of painful to read, despite the quality of your commentary.

Let's keep in mind the AFL-CIO's real reason for doing this:

"Looking toward the general election, labor strategists were alarmed by polls and focus groups of undecided union members that showed McCain doing well in match-ups with either Democratic candidate, said Karen Ackerman, political director of the AFL-CIO."

Either Obama or Clinton will need to carry union households by solid margins to win Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Related to this, McCain leads both Obama and Clinton in both MI and PA:

Now the MI numbers might be the result of ticked off Dems who are unhappy about their votes not counting at the convention. The PA numbers are more interesting, given how Clinton and Obama are going to spend the next 6 weeks there informing voters that the other candidate is unqualified to be POTUS.

This is great. Somebody's gotta be hitting McCain during this period where we don't have a nominee yet. You know the DNC can't do it, with Howard Dean hardly raising any money. I think it's awesome that the AFL is stepping up, and i think this will really hurt McCain in states that matter this fall.

Obama used to be for ethics reform. He used to be against union advertising and even criticized John Edwards for it way back in Iowa.

I guess all that is gone now.
