A reader wonders whether "lash" was too strong a word to use in the context of Sen. McCain's interaction with E. Bumiller. Perhaps it was. Generally, a Republican candidate's bandinage with a Times' report can help him, but the subject of the McCain-Kerry ticket is one that makes conservatives very nervous, and one that many want to know much more about. The questions will continue. Perhaps "lash" was not the best verb to describe McCain's reaction. My initial reaction to the video was that the nominee presumptive was peeved. Translated into journalese, that's "clearly irritated."

I was a little surpised when elizebeth asked mccain why he was so mad. I didn't think he was but perhaps this was one of those times when you had to be there to see it. Or, perhaps elizabeth was the one peeved at mccain and it came out with a nasty question? Either way, it really wasn't much of a snit by either of them.
Good for the reporter for asking questions. Now can we get them to ask Senator Clinton some real questions. http://showusthereturns.blogspot.com/
I think lash was a good description. It's not so much that he didn't like the question, it's that he didn't like where it was going.
I'd say "lashed" was spot on.
Ha. Like Marc would actually have any idea what "a reader wonders"
I think "exploded in rage" is the way I'd describe his reaction.
Wow. This is right up there with one of Bill Clinton's epic blow ups that never happened but were described as such in the media. This is such silliness. You call this angry?! I would have described it as "McCain gets annoyed with Times reporter wasting his time". McCain angry would be a lot more interesting to watch. An angry McCain would probably turn into the incredible hulk and destroy things.
So certain elements of the press are all up for some McCain baiting, and they are going to keep badgering him with questions which are designed to make him look bad. "Have you stop beating your wife?" It's curious to me that we expect him never to get fed up and call people on it. This is representative government. The candidates are people too. Anyone with any cojones would have seen what she was trying to do there. She was being a jerk to a guy who is extraordinarily open to the press. And some twisted beltway types are going to be delighted with this event as if it is news. "Ohhh did you hear that mom!?!" Like some poor 12 year old. Grow up already!
I'm with Jesse and Bob. When McCain gets angry, we'll know. There will be swearing.
Macain is the best canidate to be president of the USA
It is a shame really.... I guess we truly get what we deserve.
I'm the last one to go running to a Republican's defense, but I really didn't see what was so angry about the exchange. Just because the reporter used the word, doesn't make it accurate. McCain obviously was annoyed, but to call this some sort of lashing is just silly hyperbole. This is right up there with the "anger" Obama supposedly showed Zeleny, another Times reporter, at a rally. The video showed a pretty calm, smiling Obama disagreeing with Zeleny's line of questioning, and ABC news framed it as an angry attack. Wow, we have some thin-skinned reporters out there. Or, uh, could they be putting on the drama to make headlines on slow news days?

You know, my daddy once told me, "Son, never use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent one will do. But if you do use a five-dollar word, make damn sure to spell it correctly."
