McCain: Clinton Withdraw Plan Means 'Qaeda Wins

17 Mar 2008 11:28 am

From a CNN interview:

John KING: Well, today, back home, one of those Democrats, Senator Clinton, who could be your opponent in the fall election, is giving a speech in which she is saying if she is elected president of the United States, she will start bringing home the troops within 60 days.

John MCCAIN: Well, all I can say is that she obviously does not understand nor appreciate the progress that has been made on the ground. She told General Petraeus last year when he testified that she would have to suspend disbelief in order to believe that the surge is working. Well, the surge is working.

So I just think what that means is al Qaeda wins. They tell the world that. And we fight here again and around the Middle East. And their dedication is to follow us home. All I can say is that this will be a big issue in the election as we approach November because at least a growing number of Americans, though still frustrated and understandably so, believe that this strategy has succeeded.

…But when you look at what has happened over the last year, in the view of most objective observers, it is a pretty remarkable improvement.

How, precisely, does McCain reconcile his claim that "the surge is working" with the fact that he wasn't able to revisit the same market he attended only a year ago? Oh that's right, he can't, but nobody will bother to ask him about it, so it's a moot point.

Let's not forget a problem for HRC here too, namely that she applauded the surge's success in Bush's last SOTU address.

It would also be nice if McCain would point out that al Qaeda is not really our enemy in Iraq. Al Qaeda has already lost in Iraq in the most important sense. They have lost the support of the vast majority of Iraqis, even among the Sunnis.

The only thing that is giving them any chance of even existing in Iraq right now is our presence.

Can't wait for Petraeus's testimony...

the only thing that matters is are you pro-Israel, even when that means that you see Israel as a bait for Jeebus.

Evangelical born again Christians (crazy, scary white people) they get a pas in the media even when they call other churches " a great whore"

John McCain is coming to Israel in order to attract Jewish voters back home, James Besser reports in The Jewish Week.

It’s difficult to decide which of the Republican Jews that Jim quotes win the chutzpah award.

The Iraq war bankrupting the US means al Qaeda has ALREADY won, thanks to bin Laden's little helpers like Bush and McCain.

Steve LaBonne -

I think people do tend to forget that the stated goal of bin Laden's is to bankrupt the US.

Just part of the on going success story that is Iraq.
A female suicide bomber attacked a group of Shiite worshippers near a mosque in Karbala on Monday, killing at least 32 people and wounding 51, officials said.

soccty- and the frustrating thing is, if we actually had a Democratic Party and not just a Kinder, Gentler Republican Party, its presidential contenders would be pointing that out, every hour on the hour.

How exactly does al Qaeda win if we withdraw and the Shiite government wipes them out - as most experts believe would happen? Ah, nevermind...

John M.:

Fantastic posts!

People who are living in Iraq understands the situation better than we do and they are saying that the US occupation of Iraq is keeping al Qaeda safe in Iraq. John McCain is dead wrong when he stated that al Qaeda will run loose if the US withdraws. We the people for a perfect union must demand a better answer from John McCain...because he is still living the Vietnam War and intends on keeping the brave men and women in Iraq for another 100 years and start another war with Iran.
