McCain Lashes Out At Times Reporter

07 Mar 2008 02:34 pm

Sen. John McCain had better get used to lots of questions about 2004 and whether he was ever close to accepting John Kerry's offer to be vice president...

Today, he got angry at New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller, according to CBS News's Dante Higgins:

“Everybody knows that I had a private conversation. Everybody knows that. That I had a conversation,” McCain said. “And you know it too. You know it. You know it. So I don’t even know why you asked.”

Bumiller went on to say she read it in the New York Times and McCain charged back. “I don’t know what you read or may heard of, I don’t know the circumstances. Maybe in May of ‘04 I hadn’t had the conversation,” he said.

“I don’t know, but it’s well-known that I had the conversation. It is absolutely well-known by everyone. So do you have a question on another issue?”

Bumiller pushed to get more on the conversation by asking McCain if he could describe the conversation. “No, of course not. I don’t describe private conversations,” he said.

The reporter tried again “Okay. Can I ask you,” she said before she was cut off again. “Why should I? Then there’s no such thing as a private conversation,” McCain said.

Bumiller then asked him, “Why are you so angry?”

“Pardon me?” he asked.

“Why are you so angry?”

Great question.

Bumiller then asked him, “Why are you so angry?”

Well wouldn't you be angry if you threw a barbecue for all the nice reporters, only for them to ask you stuff like this?

Exactly the type guy I want with control of our armed forces and nuclear weapons.

Delectable.

Not if I was a Presidential candidate. If Obama had reacted like this, the press would crucify him. St.John will get a pass (#3105 by my count)

"Sen. John McCain had better get used to lots of questions about 2004 and whether he was ever close to accepting John Kerry's offer to be vice president"

That's great! Let's hope the "liberal media" doesn't bother asking candidates any question Americans want to know the answers to.

The stupid it burns.

"Lashes out"

And, Josh Marshall defines it as "flips out."

What a joke. He sounds a little annoyed, but certainly not the "angry" John McCain reported about. The reporter also pauses before asking the question about "Why are you so angry," as if prepared to bait him. Then she nervously laughs it off with a "Nevermind, nevermind."

Kudos to McCain for keeping his cool with a reporter trying to snag a "gotcha" moment.

Another win for McCain. I love the spin TPM and Ambinder are trying to put on this. If this is the best you goofy liberals can do, get used to President McCain.

re: March 7 McCain Meltdown with NYT reporter Elisabeth Bumiller

McCain, this supposed foreign policy expert, is indeed Senator Hothead.

Just what we need for world diplomacy. (not!)

Elisabeth Bumiller was right to ask "Why are you so angry?"

The American people and foreign leaders will not want to ask this about their leader.

Presumptive nominee, maybe, pompous ***, yes.

Does McCain really not know how to laugh anything off? Put him in a room with a bunch of old Reagan videos until he figures out how to do it correctly.
