McCain The Martial Southerner

31 Mar 2008 11:53 am

He was a Navy kid, so he moved around a lot as a child, but if you had to peg him to a particular geographic locale, it would be Meridian, Mississippi:

By all accounts, the McCains of Carroll County were devoted to one another and their traditions; a lively, proud and happy family on the Mississippi Delta. Yet, many McCains left here as young men to pursue careers in what has long been our family's chosen profession -- the United States Armed Forces. My great-grandfather was the sheriff and never left. But his brother, Henry Pinkney McCain, was a major general in the Army, and organized the draft in World War One. Camp McCain in Grenada, Mississippi is named for him. My great uncle, William McCain, was known as "Wild Bill" for his "dynamic" personality -- he was reputed to have ridden his horse onto his future father-in-law's porch to ask him for his daughter's hand. He chased Pancho Villa with General Pershing, was an artillery officer in World War One, and retired a Brigadier General. Both men are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, as are my father and grandfather. We trace my family's martial heritage back to the Revolution. A distant ancestor served on General Washington's staff, and it seems my ancestors fought in most wars in our nation's history. All were soldiers -- both Henry and Bill McCain were West Pointers -- until my grandfather broke family tradition and entered the Naval Academy in 1902. He was succeeded there by my father, then me, and then my son.

After this week, which will include at least three more speeches about McCain's martial history, there may well be some allied grumbling akin to William Kristol's today: biography is not destiny in politics.

True -- and McCain's campaign strategists know this. There will be several other tours over the next few months having nothing to do with where McCain is from but who he will do.

I, for one, am extremely excited to see who he will do in the coming months.

WHO he will do?

Let me guess - young, blond lobbyists.

So he comes from a long line of men who understood how to do what the civilian control over the military tells them to do. No doubt that's an honorable lineage, but just how does this qualify him to take on the role of Commander in Chief, which requires somebody who can judge whether a solution should be military or not in the first place?

Sounds like he's touting a background that's only partly germane, and the smaller part at that. His own resume, frankly, is not exactly stellar on the judgment part. All you have to do is review his utterly idiotic comments on how "safe" that Baghdad market was (with 100 heavily armed men and 5 helicopters ... and where 21 people were slaughtered the next day in retaliation). Or his comments early on in the war where he agreed with Rumsfeld that "we WILL be greeted as liberators."

McCain is interviewing for a position above his abilities.

Highlights of this old man's career:

Caught in Keating Five scandal.

Wants Iraq war to continue for 100 years.

Wants war with Iran.

Confused as to whether right wingers are agents of intolerance or not.

Caught in bed with Lobbyist.

Blames housing crisis on middle class Americans. Is for rescuing Bear Sterns but thinks that homeowners do not need any help.

Wants to give tax cuts to oil companies and millionaires.

Want same Old Bush policies then vote for same Old McCain.

Now all we need is a campaign pic of McCain decked out in his armor:

Who he will do?

McCain can't even keep straight which is Sunni and Shiite in Iraq & Iran !

Is that old age or is he that intellectually discombobulated?

I don't care how well he barbecues for the press, how the hell could Mr. Military screw that up?

100 years war, it's just unbelievable that this guy used to have such a sterling "maverick" reputation. I'm glad that this election is unmasking him and showing this guy's lack of integrity and brainpower (and, let's face it, age).

Whoa, what's with the disgustingly negative attacks aimed at this man's personal character? I guess Obama and his supporters don't live up to their "new politics" of hope after all since they are starting to sound like Howard Dean more and more.

What I come away with from this stop today is that the military is in McCain's blood. He has the best grasp of military and foriegn affairs matters of any of the candidates running. People can play 'sound bite' politics all they want, replay the same clips over and over again of him mispeaking every now and then if they want to but that doesn't change the facts.

There will be several other tours over the next few months having nothing to do with where McCain is from but who he will do.

Winner of the "most unintentionally hilarious commentary of the day" award.

Freudian slip, eh Marc? hehe

He has the best grasp of military and foriegn affairs matters of any of the candidates running.

Sorry, but his own words contradict that. Think Baghdad market, "greeted as liberators", quick victory, no house to house fighting, the surge is a successs (while forgetting the actual definition of "success".) He may understand how to wage warfare, but his grasp of foreign affairs is worse than nil, it's delusional. You only have to review his own words to see how out of touch he has been.

McCain can't even keep straight which is Sunni and Shiite in Iraq & Iran !

I agree on this one. This was a bigger deal than just a "slip". He made the same blunder twice. The topic is one in which he is presenting himself as an expert. He should have this down cold by now.

An interesting tidbit from Kos:

"The family's storied military history stretches back to Carroll County, Miss., where McCain's great-great grandfather William Alexander McCain owned a plantation, and later died during the Civil War as a soldier for the Mississippi cavalry.

"But what McCain didn't know about his family until Tuesday was that William Alexander McCain had owned 52 slaves. The senator seemed surprised after Salon reporters showed him documents gathered from Carroll County Courthouse, the Carrollton Merrill Museum, the Mississippi State Archives and the Greenwood, Miss., Public Library."

As Kos points out, no news stories about this - the focus was on the brilliant military history and folksy reminiscing. The fact that he has a slave-owning ancestor should not be held against McCain, but the story should be told. Especially if he's running around alluding to the fact that his family is noble and patriotic.

McCain knew his ancestor owned a plantation in ante-bellum Mississippi, and was surprised to find out about the slaves? I suspect the Salon reporters are embellishing.
