McCain Wants To Seat Full Michigan And Florida Delegations

12 Mar 2008 09:19 pm

A nice contrast is developing between Republicans and Democrats:

Later, speaking to reporters aboard his “Straight Talk Express” bus, McCain said he disagreed with the Republican National Committee’s decision last year to punish New Hampshire, Michigan, Florida and South Carolina Republicans for holding primaries prior to the Feb. 5 date allowed by an RNC rule. He said he supports overturning RNC-imposed sanctions that cut those states’ delegations by half.

From straight talk to straight pander in one easy leap. Of such things are Dear Leaders made.

Puh-lease. This is not in the least bit unexpected, and the same would have happened on the Democratic side had either party locked up the nomination. The only reason this has become a problem is that Obama wasn't just a passing fad and didn't shrivel and die up as expected, so now those delegations actually hold sway on the Democratic side. No one expected to have to follow through with insulting two fairly important states.

The only reason he is saying this is to give his preferred opponent Hillary a talking point.

Hillary's candidacy is on life support and being kept alive by Rush Limbaugh and the media...and now John McCain too.

I can't wait for the superdelegates to pull the plug on this freak show.

Funny how McCain only chose to voice his disagreement now that he's won the nomination. Did he really think this would fool anyone (other than Ambinder of course)?

It seems that McCain and Hillary seemingly have converging messages these days.

I agree with RKA: the superdelegates need to have some guts and pull the plug or else literally allow Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans to influence the show for the Democrats. Hillary, sadly enough, will readily go along.

I mean, Hillary has run a racist campaign the likes of which we haven't seen from Republicans for quite some time.

This is exactly the sort of situation that superdelegates were created for, and they need to act in a hurry, or else the party loses more and more each day.

Rush is laughing. Remember that.

As the old saying goes - "What's good for the Elephants is good for the Donkeys". Or something like that.

BEST CASE SCENARIO for our girl Hillary, is that the FAR LEFTIES aligned with Elmer Fudd and his spiritual heir Crack Alabama, stretch out the inevitable till late in the race. So that a re-do, or final recognition of the original vote in the two states HARMONIZE WITH PENNSYLVANIA to give her a PERFECT STORM OF MOMENTUM in the time leading up to the Convention.

If there's a mail in re-vote in FL, then there should be massive protests.

Anyone that thinks that any state, much less FL, can pull off a mail-in vote for the first time in a fair and accurate fashion is just fooling themselves.

It took Oregon 10 yrs to perfect the process and they have scans of people's signatures.

And I am willing to bet that if any group is shafted in such a process, it would be African Americans. I wonder how many African American votes would be "lost" in the mail, only to end up in a dumpster somewhere? I wonder how many African Americans would not receive their mail-in ballot?

I wonder how many fraudulent votes would be counted?

A mail in vote in FL is a disaster waiting to happen. I hope responsible citizens in FL speak out against it.

I claim no great feelings for the current primary system of who gets to go when. But, there were rules, fairly agreed upon, and certain states chose to thumb their nose at authority anyway. Well, there is a certain Americaness in that, and pray we never lose it. Nevertheless, what makes that attitude right or wrong is the momentousness and importance of the issue at hand. This is not such a case.

I think either the RNC rules and decisions emanating therefrom should be followed unaltered--*or* a full seating of the contested delegations should be done, but only concomitant with a completey revamped primary system.

And I hope this is not what we could expect in the future from a President McCain--royal proclamations of amnesty and forgiveness because he feels like it. That would make me most unethusiastic this fall...

This really angers me and not for the reasons being talked about above. If Clinton's camp did not raise a big stink about delegates that there were previously disqualified, it would not have opened up a political opportunity for McCain. For if Obama wins, you can be sure that he will be running ads in those states claiming he can best represent their interests. This Clinton/McCain ticket looks more and more likely.(And yes im joking, but only half joking.)

CM
Obama has run a racist campaign.
1. the bogus racism charge against Bill Clinton in South Carolina
2. the harassment of black superdelegates with threatening phone calls and emails to switch their votes to Obama
3. the attack on Geraldine Ferraro

The votes of FL & MI are going to count. It was the Republican governor and legislature that moved the election date. The Democratic party obliged them by punishing the voters.

You forget that the RNC also punished the states (albiet not as severly), even though the governor and legislature were Republicans.

'Sides, the decision to move before Feb 5. was popular with the two states, it's not likely that it was a partisan move.

EWard and Skeptical - Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the Gov of Michigan was a certain Canadian American lady not given to laudatory remarks about Republicans.
And in Florida, it was also Wasserman-Schultz (the liberal that talks like she has a cock in her mouth) and her fellow Dems that enthusiastically voted with the Republican Legislators and Gov??

Kind of sneaky of McCain. I like the rules and we DEFINITELY need to shift the Primary schedule around to get candidates around the special interests that rule the NH and Iowa contests - but still have rules that avoid a "The Other 49 States and Party rules be Damned" free for alls.

But bottom line, McCain is telling two critical swing states that He respected their voters and their state's power while the Dems only gave lip service to "Count Every Vote" and dissed the shit out of Florida and Michigan.

The attack on Geraldine Ferraro - A mistake, IMO. Another gratuitous use of the race card by the Obamites. I think every white woman over 50 that votes Democrat agreed with every word she said. I agreed with every word she said.

And her dismissal as a woman's favorite in the Dem Party only makes women think yet further that they are 2nd class to blacks, that Hillary has been treated shabbily by Obamites and their fawning media. And any woman will be dissed and put in their place if they ever run against a more-favored black in the Democratic Party..

I would expect many of those pissed off older and working class women to seriously consider voting McCain if they believe he treats women in politics with more respect than Obamites do. McCain has been careful to be complementary of Hillary in the Senate and so far on the campaign trail as an intelligent, hard working woman qualified to run for President while disagreeing with many of her policies.

"'Sides, the decision to move before Feb 5. was popular with the two states, it's not likely that it was a partisan move."

It's phrased differently, but I essentially said the state had bipartisan support when they disobeyed the rules.

How do you connect disagreements with respect? What makes you think McCain is secretly dismissive of women just because he disagrees with Clinton on policy issues?

Just because I disagree with someone on something like immigration doesn't mean I'm dismissive of that person's whole ethnic/gender group, let alone the person himself.

chris ford - "The attack on Geraldine Ferraro - A mistake, IMO. Another gratuitous use of the race card by the Obamites."

I agree that the whole thing was probably a mistake, but it was hardly an "attack". She said something that a lot of people found genuinely offensive, and they responded. I also find it kind of hard to wrap my head around the idea that addressing a statement that someone else makes about race is "playing the race card." If someone said that Hillary Clinton wouldn't be where she was if she wasn't a woman, and she reacted, could we accuse her of "playing the gender card"?

That's a nice, shrewd move from McCain. He's showing a lot of moxie for someone who once fought dinosaurs.

Blaming the Republicans in Florida doesn't hold water either. Only two democrats in the entire legislature voted against moving the primary date. The Democratic leadership in Florida was a full accomplice in the act.

Hillary Clinton / John Edwards 2008

FLORIDA GETS TO RE-VOTE!!!!!!!

Life Is Good!!!!!!

On Ferraro, I'll repeat my comment on the last thread:

Ferraro is a complete and total tool, both in the sense of Hillary's campaign and the meaning used in Animal House.

First, let's look at the stupidity of her comments. How could a man in his 40s with mostly local gov't experience, despite being academically accomplished, intelligent, politically astute, and a great speaker, possibly get this far in the race for President? I don't know, Gerri. Maybe you should ask BILL CLINTON, you moron!

Next, is this really how you feel? Well in 2006, you are quoted as saying said that running for President is "more realistic for a woman than it is for an African-American." Here are the other money quotes:

"There is a certain amount of racism that exists in the United States — whether it’s conscious or not it’s true."

"Women are 51 percent of the population”

Gee! How quickly she forgets. As I said, a complete and total tool.

Can anyone identify the "nice contrast...between Republicans and Democrats" that Marc is referring to.

Is it that Republicans want the FL and MI delegations seated and Democrats don't?

Is it that the remaining contenders for the Republican nomination (one) are unanimous on the issue, and the remaining contenders for the Democratic nomination disagree?

I swear, reading this blog is putting a major strain on my Excedrin supply.
