Michigan Moves Toward New Caucus / Firehouse Primary

06 Mar 2008 03:45 pm

The New Republic reports that the Michigan Democratic Party is about to submit plans for a brand new caucus to the DNC for consideration.

I'm not so sure that the MDP is that far along, and I think a firehouse primary is still under consideration, but momemtum is building in that state, certainly.

Also today, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) wrote DNC chairman Howard Dean asking him to pay for a new primary or seat the delegation allocated by January's primary.

Can you remind us what a firehouse primary is? Is it a primary run by the party rather than the state, like they have in South Carolina?

And how early could they realistically schedule this thing? I assume that reserving either caucus or primary locations, and doing all the organizational work would take some time. Could it be done any earlier than mid/late May?

I think the key word there is "caucus." That can't be good news for Hillary.

Bill Nelson expects the DNC to pay for ANOTHER primary after they broke the rules??

Screw you, dude.

I agree: Bill Nelson is an idiot. Those in FL know him as a moron...an empty suit...just a figurehead for his team of advisors. He cannot even speak very well...he has this super slow too-deliberate delivery style.

The Democratic party of FL broke the rules of the DNC, and now he wants the DNC to pay for that? Before, he wanted the taxpayers of FL to pay for that.

If anyone needs to pay, it's the Dem party of FL; they are the ones who scheduled their first primary at the warning of the DNC.

Why in the world would you reward the 2 states who broke the rules by giving them an incredibly high profile role in the nomination process? The other states who did not break the rules should be seething at the thought of FL or MI getting a break and getting to potentially play such a high profile role.

Either way, there's going to be a problem...but it's the fault of the Democratic parties in FL and MI for not wanting to play by the rules.

This morning on MSNBC, David Shuster pointed out that it's not a bad idea for FL to pay for it. With all the media/politico attention, it will more than pay for itself.

Nelson's a shill for HRC. How about making him this offer: The DNC is more than happy to pay for a caucus but not a primary. THAT should shut him up.

My understanding of a "firehouse primary" is where secret ballots are dropped off at the local firehouses. A variation of the mail in ballot type primary. The problem is that Military personnel over seas have trouble participating which I thought was one of the necessary criteria.

These new primaries are not going to be until late may at the earliest in not until mid June.

I imagine that Indiana and North Carolina would scream holy hell if they were scheduled before or even with them - seeing as they didn't break any rules.

Typical democrats/liberals. Won't keep their word. Change the ruls as they go along to suit them.

ONyl difference now is that it's Dem v. Dem. instead of the trying to scr@w the GOP usual.

If Obama wins a Caucus after Hillary won a Primary the workclass Dems and older woman in Michigan will go for McCain in Nov in Record numbers.

Barack Obama has the strength and moral fortitude to grow with America into a new era. Clinton has nothing but the same old tired politics we have lived with for far too long. She is the Rovian antithesis - opposite in parallel...the yin to the yang of the dark machine. I will vote against the democratic party for the first time in 20 years if she steals the nomination. I have voted for her family 3 times and finally saw the light when she chose the 'politically expedient' choice of voting us into Iraq. I've simply had enough. - Enough.

A firehouse primary is open only to the party at issue and has a limited number of polling stations.
