On Tanker Deal, McCain Campaign Jabs At The Media

12 Mar 2008 10:14 am

"Incredibly," writes McCain adviser Steve Schmidt in a memo this morning -- and I am broadly paraphrasing -- the national media has the audacity to ask tough questions about John McCain. And if you ask tough questions of John McCain during this campaign, especially those questions that impinge on the sensitive parts of McCain's self-definition, you'd better be prepared for the full Schmidt.

Schmidt is a veteran of the Republican National Committee, the judicial nomination battles, Vice President Cheney's office and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's re-election campaign, has one tried-and-true battle plan for of dealing with dealing with charges he finds unacceptable: a full scale, blame-the-media, ridiculousness,outrageousness,sky-is-falling, blunt, pound, pound, pound, eye-squinting, jaw-clenching, vein-bulging -- you get the idea. That's his style.

Substantively, I have always found Schmidt to be fair, ethical and responsive.

Here's the memo.

To: Interested Parties From: Steve Schmidt Subject: Facts on John McCain and the tanker deal Date: 3/12/2008

Over the past few days, there have been a number of political attacks launched by John McCain’s political opponents attempting to blame him for the Boeing Company not being awarded the USAF tanker contract.

Incredibly, several news organizations have parroted the attack. Here are the facts:

John McCain uncovered a massive taxpayer rip-off and evidence leading to corruption convictions for Boeing and Pentagon officials, some of whom went to jail for their crimes. The CEO of Boeing resigned.[1] John McCain’s investigation saved the taxpayers over $6 billion dollars.[2] Is it really possible that there are Members of Congress saying that John McCain was wrong to fight and stop the corruption? Should the fraudulent deal have been permitted? Should criminals not have gone to jail? Should the Department of Defense not be held accountable to select the most capable systems for the best price to the taxpayers? Isn’t that what our security requires, and American taxpayers deserve? Are the Democrats now the Party of no-bid contracts? That John McCain is being attacked for uncovering and stopping corruption that sent criminals to jail speaks directly to everything that is wrong in Washington today. All John McCain has ever cared about is a transparent, fair defense procurement process. This process, established by the DOD following the tanker scandal, allows for a fair and open competition and an appeal process -- which Boeing is entitled to under law. John McCain fully supports Boeing's right to a review, and will demand that this review is fair. The American people want leaders that put principle over politics, who value our national security interests and the good stewardship of the taxpayers’ dollar over political self-interest. That’s what straight talk is all about. That’s John McCain.

Some of the Democratic attacks seem cheap. But the substance of the news stories are a little thicker. By asking the Air Force to change the questions it planned to ask during the bidding process, it tipped the scales in favor of EADS -- or so the reportage seems to suggest. That's what Boeing -- the company McCain investigated -- is alleging. McCain deserves the benefit of the doubt here. There's no evidence of a quid pro quo and no evidence of anything hinky... just, as I wrote yesterday, a little bit of an optics problem. Too many lobbyists with too many interests will prompt questions, and McCain will be forced to answer them.

I agree, Democratic politicians are actually appearing to defend corruption and criminals. And yes....a few publications are doing the same. This is insane. What happened to America?

What a crybaby. I thought McCain's campaign theme was "I'm tough"?

This campaign seems thin-skinned and afraid of the truth. I can see why McCain's scared of having his ties to lobbyists exposed, but when someone over-reacts like this, it sends the signal: Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I agree, Democratic politicians are actually appearing to defend corruption and criminals. And yes....a few publications are doing the same. This is insane. What happened to America?

The corruption was inexcusable, but that was also several years ago. The original tanker lease deal itself might not have been irredeemably bad, but if we can save some money with a different arrangement, I'm all for it.

A better question might be, what happened to the American aircraft industry? If you want to buy American for a platform based on an American-built airliner, you have one choice. If nationality isn't important, you have the luxury of, basically, two choices. (I'm not counting the Russians here.) I want the best, most cost-effective platform selected for the job, but I have some pretty serious qualms about outsourcing a $100 billion defense contract with the trade deficit where it is.

McCain and his cronies are full of sh*t.

It is very simple. McCain and his advisers lobbied for Airbus and against American jobs.

In 2006, McCain lobbied the Bush Administration to change its procurement practices so that Airbus, along with its partner Northrop Grumman, could bid on a $35 billion U.S. Air Force contract that may eventually be worth $100 billion. McCain trick worked since Airbus won the contract beating Boeing.

McCain's action are costing american jobs.

It is true when McCain says that the jobs that are gone are gone for good. Thanks you Mr. McSame.

McCain's campaign team has at least three lobbyists who were hired by Airbus to help the European aerospace giant win that very same contract.

McCain sends US jobs to Europe!

Senator McCain's refusal to comment personally on this, speaks volumes to me. He is complicit in the decision to award this deal to the EADS.

Remember that Mccain is a very very angry old man. He calls his republican senator colleagues "f*ck you".

McCain has huge anger management problem.

We all know that McCain is in bed with lobbyist. The only news here is that McCain is also in bed with foreign lobbyists.

McCain deserves the benefit of the doubt here.

Marc, don't forget, you're not allowed to write about your opinions here.

So now we've supplanted a $20-$25B corrupted tanker deal with a $30-$100B tanker deal that is as pure as the driven snow. Thank you so much, Senator McCain, for saving us taxpayers so much money. Thank you also for ensuring that the latest tanker competition was so fair and open -- to use the catchphrase from your boasts (no doubt well-scripted for you by your ex-EADS-lobbyist handlers) so effectively parroted by the USAF procurement types, post-award. What a deal: Bend over backward with a blind eye to entice, cajole, and coax the French into entering the competition, and then subsequently cluck over fairness and openness with the domestic supplier consequently disadvantaged. Fine show, sir: The Frog Tanker now joins the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill, the McCain-Feingold campaign speech abridgment, and the Gang of 14 accomplishments in your trophy case.

It appauls me that one of the aircraft that has received illegal subsities was even allowed to compete for this contract. I understand McCains objection to the first deal. This is a completely separate deal. McCain said that American jobs should not be considered. The best deal for the American taxpayers should only be considered. Where does he think the taxbase comes from for the extreme debt that the Republicans have added to our country? It sure does not come from people who work for EADS. That tax base is from American Workers paying American Taxes. If the American Workers are not working then the federal budget increases through unemployment insurance. Are we then going to ask France or Germany to give us money to help the displaced workers. I think not.

Its funny that Bush/Cheney get hit routinely for granting no-bid contracts to American companies like Blackwater and Haliburton instead of going with cheaper, more effective overseas companies.

Now McCain is getting hit for doing exactly the opposite.

I thought McCain was a third Bush term though??

Democratic pretzel logic is making my head hurt.

Well, not precisely the opposite, Jesse: the Northrop/EADS bid is both partially overseas AND more expensive. But then again, with 60% of the work being done in the Euro-zone, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

The full Schmidt? I think we're getting the full Ambinder. Since when does reporting consist of reprinting a press release? You've carefully omitted all the facts reported by those pesky media folks in the WP about how McCain's campaign is full of Airbus/Northrup dudes. From what I've read, Northrup deserved to get the contract, but to pretend that John has clean hands here, well, I guess you'd have to be, ..., wait for it, ..., wait for it, ..., full of Schmidt. OK, I retire. I'll never be able to top that.

McCain is the reason why Jack Abramoff is in jail.

McCain went against his own party and lead the investigation of Abramoff with ended sending republicans in congress to jail.

McCain has an awful press team. It shows how thin his staff is and how low budget his operation is.

If McCain had any kind of press team they would go on the offense.

A lot of K street hates McCain for leading the charge against Abramoff.

Going after McCain with lies and deception is juvenile.

McCain also has former Boeing lobbyists working for him. The EADS weren't lobbying for Boeing when McCain wrote the letters to Gates.

McCain has many weaknesses but he has shown by going after Abramoff that he is not a patsy for lobbyists. Could you ever imagine Dennis Hastert doing that?

All McCain wanted was for the deal to be opened up after their was corruption.

Dems were calling for Halliburton to be reopened after the corruption.

For the dems to attack McCain here shows they care nothing about corruption. They are for some crooks.

This line of attack on McCain is pathetic.

Ickes is a former lobbyist working for Clinton.

Obama has former lobbyists working for him.

McCain also has former boeing lobbyists on his campaign.

Campaigns are huge operations. One of the lobbyists in question is a former congressman who mccain is long time friends with.

This whole notion if you are a lobbyist you are corrupt is foolish.

McCain showed by going after Abramoff that he is no friend to the corrupt lobbyists even if it hurts his own party.

It is slimy for McCain to be constantly distorted by the DNC and the media. There hasn't been one day in the last 4 weeks that their hasn't been a hit piece on McCain full of distortions.

Maybe our government needs to learn what things are worth and in a single bidder contract the Government needs to set a price and ask the company involved if they want the contract. If not then offer it to the other possible companies!
Washington and the armed forces have just paid whatever to get their needed equiptment for too long costing the tax payers billions of dallars.

To quote President Eisenhower in 1961, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."
Given that the citizenry now feels the government is their employer of last resort, we need a President who, like Ike, understands congressional/military gamesmanship. Get the DVD "Why We Fight" and pay attention. If you really want change in Washington elect McCain, the defense industry lobbyist's worst nightmare!

John McCain has received tens of thousands of dollars from French based EADS. At least two of his staffers are former EADS lobbyists. He used his political power to eliminate Boeing from consideration. Are we suppose to ignore this? What is this "straight talk" nonsense? The above article mentions nothing of these very serious facts. Our leaders and the media have become a predatory menace. We're on our own.
