Spitzer's Brief Statement: No Resignation

10 Mar 2008 03:14 pm

"I acted in a way that violated in my obligation to my family...I apologize first and most importantly to my family, and to the public, I promise better."

"I am disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected my expect I must dedicated some time to regain the trust of my family."

No statement of resignation. No hint that he's going to be -- or has been -- indicted.

The presidential candidates will be asked about this at some point.

And now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together.

Marc,

It's (probably) not a federal violation, and at the very least, prosecuting it as such would constitute an inequitable application of the law. David Vitter isn't going to jail; why should Spitzer?

That said, it's going to be awfully tough for him to cling to office - or worse, he may pull that off, but it'll be near impossible for him to do anything for a year or more.

according to the NYT, Spitzer was flying the sex worker from NYC to DC... interstate commerce.

What FlyOnTheWall said. Why should Spitzer resign if Vitter does not?

I'm not sure what Spitzer has left to do that he could reasonable accomplish.

He shouldn't resign. Put all that New York spirit of sexual liberalism to the test. Time to put up or shut up, NY.

"I am disappointed..."

What!?! He is disappointed? With what exactly ...that he got caught? ...that the public can't help but notice his "ethical crusader" persona is and has been a sham? ...that people might remember that his "landslide, historic" election was largely because he was running all but unopposed?

The sheer, self-righteous hubris of this guy has never ceased to amaze me...

Will Hillary Clinton reject his support or just denounce him?

"according to the NYT, Spitzer was flying the sex worker from NYC to DC... interstate commerce."

The famous Mann Act!

I think Spitzer has to resign for a couple of reasons. It's somewhat different for Governor and a Senator - the Governor enforces the laws of the state. Secondly, he's politically dead now. He's was tremendously weakened by the Bruno scandal, and now is finished. Had he been doing well and popular like Clinton or Giuliani he might have been able to survive, but really he was kind of limping along. It's a shame because Spitzer seemed like he'd have the clout to make New York government functional. Of note, the Lieutenant Governor who would take over if he resigned, is a legally blind African American man, who was formerly the minority leader of the State Senate.

I enjoy your reporting. You are such a good writer. Does anyone ever remind you of this? Probably every day.

Maybe he can hire, Burson Marsteller, the firm that manages Hillary's campaign. They are experts at damage control.

To John Talbutt: Probably, the Rezko team would have the most experience in matters of this sort. I'd suggest starting there when looking for scandal advice. Hmmmm?

If Spitzer is forced to resign and face prosecution, so should Vitter. Period. The depth of Republican hypocrisy is bottomless and appalling.

Feel sorry for his 3 daughters, what a poor example of a dad he is. His wife has to hurt also, she is goodlooking and should not be treated that way..if she gets a divorce...i am available..

"... prosecuting it as such would constitute an inequitable application of the law."

Excuse me? How many people in New York have been prosecuted for solicitation -- is it thousands or tens of thousands? (Indeed, Spitzer himself prosecuted two large prostitution rings, involving dozens of people.)

He needs to resign *and* be prosecuted.

ANOTHER CORRUPT IDIOT. JUST LIKE ALL THE REST.
THEY CLAIM TO KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR US.
THEY DO NOTHING BUT STEAL FROM US.
THEY CONDUCT ASSAULTS ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THE NAME OF GOD WHILE LINING THEIR POCKETS.
THEY ARE DISGUSTING, AND SHAMEFUL HYPOCRITES.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. DEMAND BETTER. DO NOT ACCEPT LESS.

Mr. Spitzer spitssssss....on the law.....
and the lovely, virgin Hillary, who is practically joined at the hip to this hypocrite
is strangely distant. Would, that ONE, TWO, or
more reporters would ask her ....over..and over
what her feelings are about agreeing with,
then renouncing his "licenses for illegals"?
This guy was useful to her campaign when he
was a power broker.......let's quiz her
now that he's not. If she dumps him for the
scandal....ask her why she still hangs on
to her husband's dirty campaign jackets..to
get where she wants to go.

Re: Lars in Dallas:
I guess Bill Clinton should have resigned...
but that would have taken "character"...
watching this duo slide their political
offal back on the stage for a reappraisal
by the American voters is an affront to decency.
You may hate Republicans.....but don't choke
on Clinton garbage.
