Steve King, The Outrage Du Jour, And Obama's Challenge

10 Mar 2008 11:01 am

Reader J.G.: "Obviously, the Germans were dancing in the streets when Eisenhower was appointed the Supreme Allied Commander...."

Rep. Steve King (R-IA):

"They will be dancing in the streets if he's elected president and that has a chilling effect on how difficult it will be to ever win this global war on terror,"

Never one to mince words or self-filter, Rep. King has cooked up the outrage du jour by suggesting that the "optics of a Barack Obama potentially getting elected president of the United States" does matter.

It does matter. His middle name does matter. It matters because they read meaning into that and the rest of the world, it has special meaning to them. They'll be dancing in the streets because of his middle name. They'll be dancing in the streets because of who his father was and because of his posture that says pull out of the Middle East and pull out of this conflict. So there are implications that have to do with who he is and the positions that he has taken.

Uncouth, of course, and transparently silly to many, but King is making an argument that Obama will be forced to contend with because he has an Arabic middle name and an African surname. King's argument, however misleading, is different than the non-contextual references to his middle name, or the false allegations about his religion.

King has his facts wrong. Obama doesn't want to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, first of all. Second of all, Al Qaeda, dancing in the streets? There are 400 of them, and they live in caves. Thirdly: wouldn't it more likely that Obama is viewed as an infidel? And Andrew Sullivan, in his December '07 Atlantic cover, starts with the same premise and comes to the opposite conclusion:

Consider this hypothetical. It’s November 2008. A young Pakistani Muslim is watching television and sees that this man—Barack Hussein Obama—is the new face of America. In one simple image, America’s soft power has been ratcheted up not a notch, but a logarithm. A brown-skinned man whose father was an African, who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, who attended a majority-Muslim school as a boy, is now the alleged enemy. If you wanted the crudest but most effective weapon against the demonization of America that fuels Islamist ideology, Obama’s face gets close. It proves them wrong about what America is in ways no words can.

Good video. The assclown at the beginning is typical of the Republican Party and a great example of why I dropped them a few years back and became an Independent.

Obama '08.

Aren't Arabs notoriously racist based on skin-tone? Wouldn't they chaff at being told what to do by an African?

Any I never hear any of you Obama-shillers admit that having a woman president would do wonders to inspire the 50% of the Middle East that is not engaged in politics and that is responsible for raising these would-be terrorists you keep suggesting will be de-fanged because Obama is president.

Deride all you want, but it's silly to act as if King doesn't have a point. The NY Times (I believe) had an article in which a senior Pentagon official said that the "optics" of an Obama presidency would be terrible. Ignoring the fact the Obama is Muslim by birth (anyone born of a Muslim father is considered Muslim in Islam) and has the middle name Hussein is just as bad as making too much of those facts.

Well, look at it this way. If Al Quaeda does start dancing in the streets, they'll be easier to locate. That would be a good thing, right?

"Let me be clear. I think Republican consultants are mostly very stupid. I think they have no education. I think they have no sense of history."

-- Newt Gingrich, in an interview with blogtalkradio flagged by Jonathan Martin.

With morons and brain-dead people like Peter King what Gingrich said sounds so true.

His remarks are appalling on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. It shows he doesn't have the foggiest understanding of jihadist thinking or theology. I suspect you are right--Obama would be seen as an infidel, or even if a link to Islam could be made, an apostate which is even worse in their eyes. It shows he thinks the war on terror is not about terrorism but about culture...a dangerous freefall that takes us straight to the notion that the US is at war with Islam, which it is NOT. What would have happened if during WWII we refused to let anyone in the public sphere who had a Germanic name? Or, for that matter, who was Christian? Didn't Hitler see himself as having a divine mandate?

Obama is the only candidate who stands a chance of undoing the alienation that our stance has caused to so many potential allies in the war on terror across the world. Andrew Sullivan was spot on in his cover article--Obama has an unearned but nonetheless true advantage in that simply who he is ethnically constitutes some of the soft power we are in desperate need of.

Shame on Rep. King.

Deride all you want, but it's silly to act as if King doesn't have a point.

Thanks, Tom. I normally save most of my derision for ignorant blowhards like you and your partner-in-idiocy, Peter Cav, above. WTF is the matter with you?

Peter King and his republican sycophants supporting what he said are the most ignorant, brain-washed and stupidest Americans for sure. It clearly shows that they have no clue about cause of terrorism and world affairs. Only thing they know is fear mongering.

Steve King is quite possibly the biggest buffoon in all of congress. I'm more qualified to say that than most people, since he is my congressman. His latest shtick for vetoing almost any new bill is that "illegal aliens might be able to use this service". He is a world-class idiot.

In 1928, many Protestants feared that Al Smith would take orders from the Vatican if elected president. He never effectively countered that idea. In 1960, John F. Kennedy did manage to deflate that fear. Obama needs to do something similar this year, the sooner the better. It's all ridiculous and ignorant, but Hillary is playing on these vague fears right now, as in he's not a Muslim "as far as I know."

The American Taliban and Rep. King

Islamic fundamentalism is more in tune with conservatism than progressive values.

Our international enemy, Islamic radicalism, is actually the polar opposite of what progressives stand for. Both islamic radicals and conservative radicals here stand for exaxt same things.. their actions on women rights are deplorable, they insist on theocracy, they love torture and the death penalty, they demand to control the culture (TV, movies, music), they rail against rampant sexuality, they seek to spread their ideology via force, and they have a well-defined black-and-white sense of truth.

The Taliban/Al Qaida/Hezbollah/Jihadists of this world are exactly what we see in the Republican Party of Peter King as the GOP wants to consolidate power by any means -- creeping theocracy, moralizing, us versus them, embrace of torture, the need to constantly declare jihad on someone, hysterics over football-game nipples, control over "decency" on the airwaves, lyrics censorship, hostility to women freedoms, curtailing of civil liberties, and so on.

Mr. Peter King, please look into the mirror!

For Republican Lurkers.

The democrats are just TOO MESSED UP.

Hillary Clinton is NOT A FIGHTER..SHE’S A BULLY!! She would SAY & DO ANYTHING TO GET WHAT SHE WANTS. She's soo full of herself, stoop soo low as to make Obama less qualified than the Republican nominee , calling him a fairy tale, maybe a muslim, maybe a drug dealer, going around telling people to fear him, equate him to Ken Starr for crying out loud and after that she has THE ARROGANCE to imply she would consider him to be her running mate when he’s the one with more delegates, more states won, more votes. Now, that's LOW even for republicans. The Clintons would rather see their party torn apart, than having somebody else be the nominee. She has made Obama's supporters so disgusted & appalled that the thought of voting for her on any ticket would make them hurl!!! REPUBLICANS SHOULD KEEP THIS GOING, The longer the Clintons talk, the more repulsive they become, they JUST CAN’T HELP THEMSELVES.

My republican friends, WITH OUR CANDIDATE ALREADY SELECTED, LET'S MAKE SURE WE VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON! This is OUR GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. She has screwed up her party so much, there's no way most of those new enthusiastic Obama’s supporters would vote for her come general election, those Obama republicans certainly won't, majority of independents may consider McCain but CAN’T STAND Clinton. There's NOTHING MORE ENERGIZING FOR US THAN TO VOTE AGAINST HER IN NOVEMBER (talking about turning the table to our side) She's done a PERFECT job FOR The Republican Party, LET'S REPAY HER “KINDNESS” & GIVE HER WHAT SHE WANTS. Obama's movement will be GONE (Thanks to her), and WE'LL BE THE ONE REAPING THE BENEFIT. WE WILL HAVE A MOVEMENT VOTING AGAINST HILLARY IN GENERAL ELECTION. You gotta stomach it republicans, if you’re in PA you have until March 24 to register as democrat & vote for Hillary. The outcome will so worth the sacrifice.

We should NEVER let democrats win the White House & Hillary can help us do it, SHE ALREADY HAVE, WE JUST NEED TO FINISH IT! Even after George Bush screwing up, Billary are helping us claim VICTORY in 2009. There's still HOPE for us afterall. Ooh the IRONY is just too much. One DEMOCRAT is A MONSTER and the OTHER is A LOOSER, Thanks to the Monster! Their ONLY HOPE candidate is crushed by his party MONSTER and giving US the HOPE instead. PERFECT!

THANK GOD FOR MCCAIN…, he looks BETTER & BETTER BY THE DAY! My fellow republicans let's MAKE SURE WE VOTE FOR HILLARY. This is WAY…TOO EASY to keep the White House. NO WONDER DEMOCRATS NEVER WIN. Hillary has given us OBAMA on a SILVER PLATER, & SHE WILL BE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK when SHE'S THE NOMINEE. EITHER WAY, REPUBLICAN WILL WIN! HOW BEAUTIFUL IS THAT!

Where is McCain on this?

Why is media not asking McCain whether he condemns and rejects Steve King's support? Or is media still bloated after spending weekend at McCain's ranch? Looks like the bribes have worked.

Let us see if McCain has balls to condemn and reject this bufoon called Steve King.

Shame on Rep. King and on all Clintons' campaigners! About her: I am puzzled. Why can't Mrs. Clinton rather explain what she really did during the last 20 years to truly help Americans and Latinos in particular? I mean something that really counts. Anything ? She is projecting to the world the image of a nasty woman pushed by an incredible hunger for power. NAFTAGate has embarrassed the Canadians and she should apologize, but she won't because anything goes as long as she wins. She just suggested she might well ask Sen. Obama to become her VP. Will she, really? Someone she says would not be ready to be the President of the United States? Another day, another lie. May God protect us from her after 8 years with Bush.

Party of Bush, McCain, Steve King, Tom, Republican party, is being rapidly rebranded as a party of men who exemplify the least attractive, most pathetic aspects of the gender—they are the stubborn, arrogant, lazy, incompetent (Iraq, Katrina), clueless, fearmongers, hypocritical, crude, nasty fathers, Homer Simpson crossed with Tony Soprano, the kind of men who snarl and posture as old-fashioned patresfamilias but don’t come through when and where it counts.

"THANK GOD FOR MCCAIN…, he looks BETTER & BETTER BY THE DAY!"

I agree with this even though I'm not a Republican...

Representative King's comments only confirm my belief in the republican party-they are ignorant and pompous, and they only spew their hatred of those different from them. Fear is their usual tool of use. Rep. King reminds me of Archie Bunker. What an utter dolt! Archie Bunker was a role, what is Rep. King's excuse? Moreover, isn't it odd that republicans, can never say I was wrong or I apologize. WOW!

Oh no, Tom...please don't threaten us!

American soft power would grow at a logarithmic rate???

Do you realize how SLOW that is? I think they meant exponential. Logs grow slower than plain counting 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. etc.

Can anyone answer this for me: Why are republicans so stupid?

Barack is also an Arabic (Semitic) name. Its root meaning B-R-K is "blessing." This root appears in other leaders' names like Hosni Mubarak, Ehud Barak, etc.

Juan Cole spells it out in greater (and more authoritative) detail.

King's comments, though inflammatory and stupid, are only a trend for him. His comments should really be considered spam and sent to the trash, considering that he's most famous for calling Joseph McCarthy an American Hero.

Unfortunately, the absurdity of Rep. King's comments only speak to the fear mongering that is so prevalent in our current political state. King's use of fear clearly demonstrates his ineptitude, but speaks to the larger problem of fear as a voting tactic.

As an Iowan, I can only hope the 5th District votes him out next time he is up for re-election. He's a stain on our state for sure.

Responding to above comment from Trish
I am disgusted by Republicans that would vote in the DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY just because they want the "weaker" Democrat to win so their canadite has a better chance of winning the general election. What an underhanded, unfair and chicken S**t way to try to get your canidate elected. If you feel strongly about the canidate you support good for you but don't cheat to win that is not the American way, even my 6 year old T-baller has already learned that lesson. Play to win but play fair!!

King speaks for himself, and was a hero for McCain-hating far right conservatives in the primaries. To give you an idea of where he sits on the spectrum, self-styled "true conservatives" of the sort who still refer to McCain as "Juan" because of McCain-Kennedy were deeply disappointed when King's primary endorsement went to Fred Thompson instead of Mitt Romney or some more radical pandering loser on immigration. If King has spoken up in support of McCain, I'm not aware of it. He's only slightly more representative of mainstream conservatives than Cynthia McKinney or Pastor Wright or Minister Farrakhan or William Ayers is of mainstream liberals.

As for the merits of King's position or Sullivan's, both are rather ridiculous. If radical islamists don't hesitate sending suicide bombers against marketplaces, wedding parties, political offices, etc., etc., full of their nominal co-religionists and ethnic or tribal brothers and sisters, why should they care whether the Great Satan's figurehead is black, white, brown, or puce?

For some, Obama's apostate status (something he was born into just as the children of Jewish mothers are born Jewish as far as both Jews and their enemies are concerned) may matter as a point of propaganda, but, really, how the sentiments of our racist enemies or reverse racist friends might be affected by skin-tone atmospherics and other superficial racialisms should be the last thing we take into account when we choose our leaders.

or racist friends or reverse racist enemies...

So I was channel flipping and stopped at Fox News. They ran three stories in a row of a black or latino guy killing or kidnapping a white girl. While Fox is all about forming bigotry in its viewers, giving way more time to crimes committed by people of color against whites, this one was even more outrageous. I kept watching to see how they would use these stories to push a bigger agenda (like a "war on gangs," which they did) and to see how many of these stories they would string together. Try to follow the bouncing ball:

Story 1: "Black man caught driving murdered pretty college white girl's car and using her ATM card." [Legitimate story, though we must ask why we only hear about pretty white girls killed by people of color.]

Story 2: "Black man arrested in murder of pretty college white girl." [By stringing the stories together the implication is that the black man from the first story is the killer of the first pretty white girl.]

Story 3: "White girl kidnapped by black/brown Latino boyfriend." [Huh? Ok, where did this story come from? Where are they going with this? Are they setting up another story?]

Story 4: "Barack Obama 'attacks' Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail." [Unbelievable!]

This is exactly why Obama cannot "get tough on Clinton" or "hit back." She'll play dirty and keep hitting him and people will question his toughness. His toughness is in his ability to take all of this shit and not hit back. The Clinton's are hoping to God that he'll hit back so that these "big bad black man attacks innocent white girl" stories. There are few racist story lines that are more deeply ingrained in US consciousness. We still haven't Killed that Mockingbird...

Enough of fear mongering! We are in 21st century; by 2050 more than 1/2 of the U.S will be non-European.

Jim Wallis, the evangelical theologian and best-selling author, gets the last word.

"Like his politics or not, support his candidacy or not -- but don't disparage Barack Obama's faith, his church, his minister or his credibility as an articulate Christian layman who feels a vocation in politics," Wallis wrote in a blog last week.

"Those falsehoods are simply vicious lies and should be denounced by people of faith from across the political spectrum."

You have just confirmed once again why dems. will win the next election.Racism us an ethos of the repub. party. What happened to the party of Lincoln?

You have just confirmed once again why dems. will win the next election.Racism us an ethos of the repub. party. What happened to the party of Lincoln?

I'll be scared to have Obama as our president of U.S.A. than Clinton.

"Why are republicans so stupid?" Elaine

TR: Around 30% of all people are stupid. (This is going by polls where it's always "30% don't know who George Washington is" or "30% can't identify the US on a map.")

Still I think it's plausible stupid Republicans have a higher voting turn-out than stupid Democrats. Many of them have kids or spouses or churches to remind them to vote. Because of that idiotic or bigoted Republicans may get voted in more.

Stupid Democratics tend to be unmarried people. Stupid Republicans may believe in things about evolution that allow them to join a supportive group. As I recall Democrats have a higher belief in things like ghosts and astrology. However these things seem to be more individualized and not communal. So we're not seeing many astrology or New Age clubs getting their people to vote Democrat. If we did we might get stupid Democrats saying that McCain would ruin the country because he was born under a bad sign or is cursed by having a slave-owning ancestor.

Certainly this stuff has to be worrisome to Hillary Clinton when she sits down to decide WHETHER OR NOT TO OFFER OBAMA THE VICE PRESIDENCY.

Myself, I wouldn't be inclined to. Aside from the AS YET UNRESOLVED REZKO/AUCHI QUESTIONS dogging Vice Presidential Candidate Obama in Chicago, there is the the matter of his very shady UNITED TRINITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH involvment with BLACK POWER ADVOCATES like Jeremiah Wright Jr., and Louis X Farrakhan.

The Afro Centric Church is currently being investigated for financial fraud, and recently the gay director of the TUCC boy's choir was killed in a sordid deviant sex dispute.

Ethan:
I guess using your logic we should also be worried of Euro-centric and Latino-centric churches of our politicians, Israeli-centric synagogues, or you just fear people who have dark complexion. I am sure, just like Mr. King, you don't consider yourself to be racist. Can you reflect on this? Or, this may be too hard for you to grasp.

I guess most comments here are from American. I am a foreigner from Asia. When I first heard Barack Obama was running for US President and his name is Hussein. The first thing jumped into my mind is , "Is this guy a Muslim?" For people outside of USA who are not familiar with the background of Barack Obama or any other candidates, we draw the first impression from their names. Just put this way, what will the average American will think about when they hear Muhammad becomes the Britain Prime Minister. Well, Steve King may seem arrogant but he does have a point. Frankly, I am surprised so many people denounce him for what he said is basically a common sense and truth.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I live in USA right now.

Obama is the Christ of the political season for the Democrats. The Clintons hold the political
TEMPLE. Whom do YOU think wins? The superdelegates are "Pontius Pilate".....I
rest my case.

"Deride all you want, but it's silly to act as if King doesn't have a point. The NY Times (I believe) had an article in which a senior Pentagon official said that the "optics" of an Obama presidency would be terrible. Ignoring the fact the Obama is Muslim by birth (anyone born of a Muslim father is considered Muslim in Islam) and has the middle name Hussein is just as bad as making too much of those facts." Tom

Comment: Because of racist guys like Tom, US will never elect a black, woman, Italian, East European and anyone other than a white Anglo-Saxon male as President in our lifetime. That is why I think the Democrats are deluded. Forget the racist south. There are enough racists in Iowa (especially Steve King's district), Ohio and Pennsylvania to give McCain the Presidency.

One more thing..if Tom is a racist, I am not sure what Steve King is. In the immigration debate two years ago, he made a speech which was almost plagarized from Karl Marx's Das Kapital..made him sound like a Soviet style communist. His support for raid on homes, giving police more powers, waterboarding and KGB style tactics may mean he has communist and Marxist sympathies not very different from Andropov. But, then again he has made comments which make me think that he may belong to the American Nazi party or the KKK.

Following the jewish rules Hillary would be jewish (anyone born of a jewish mother or of a mothers mother is considered jewish). Normally people in a glashouses are not throwing stones. How she can be so sure that no one ever will throw on of this kind of stones back?

As an Iowan, I would like to apologize for all for the simple fact that Steve King has been repeatedly elected by Iowans.

Fear-mongering is quite popular these days and it is an ominous sign. It has always been used by despots to engage in war, pogroms, smear campaigns against the opposition, etc., etc. Look how the fear machine slimed John Kerry and other decorated war heros. Look how it fired attorneys general who weren't sufficiently partisan in their prosecutions. Look how it has been used to justify torture.

My beloved country faces real challenges in energy independence, a faltering education system, an unsustainably expensive health-care "system", and changing global realities.

Until we all can recognize that the likes of Steve King are roadblocks to real progress (and this includes Big Media, who loves to chase stupid stories), we are in for tough sledding.
