The Fowlers Split! And Are Still Married

04 Mar 2008 02:08 pm

It's official. The top power couple in Democratic Party politics have broken up -- but their marriage is just fine, thank you.

Don Fowler, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a member of the DNC from South Carolina, is a long-time support of Hillary Rodham Clinton's.

And today, Carol Khare Fowler, the chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, has thrown her support to Barack Obama.

So from the Fowlers, it's net one for Obama. I wonder if it increases marital discord given the fact that Don, being a superdelegate from Florida, doesn't actually have have a vote. That one has to hurt.

Jeff, I doubt it. Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are on opposite sides of the aisle and not only has California benefited from that situation, but their marriage seems as strong as ever.

Obviously I'm not a member of either family but it seems to me that intelligent Americans take diametrically opposed political viewpoints in stride from the people they love. In this case they are both Democrats; I can't imagine this causing more than a tiny little blot of tension. I would imagine it more likely to spark interesting and lengthy debate sessions between spouses. At least, that's the way it was with my last roommate (who wanted Ron Paul to win).

C'mon, this is called covering your bets. Rangel's wife endorsed Obama in Harlem too. You need someone in the family who'll get phone calls returned.

Whatever their foibles, I have to say that Bill & Hillary Clinton remain the top "power couple" in the party. As a second, what about John & Debbie Dingell? Tom & Linda Daschle as #3? Rosa DeLauro and Stan Greenberg? A mildly interesting parlor game. Other nominations?

If James Carville and Mary Matlin can make it, the Fowlers will be alright

Hate to correct you, Marc, but Don is an At-Large member of the DNC who lives in SC, not a member from Florida.
Although when I saw what you'd written I called to make sure this whole episode hadn't caused him to move to Florida!

I think we can safely and emphatically say my predictions of marital discord were not, repeat not, correct.
