The Times Will Correct The Kristol Column

17 Mar 2008 12:05 pm

The New York Times will shortly add a correction to Bill Kristol's column.

Comments (30)

They should RETRACT it and FIRE Kristol! This lie is already being emailed around as if it were truth, with the NYT imprimatur on it.

kristol's arguement is largely bassed on that error...the nyt should delete his op-ed altogether or at the very least have kristol make an unreserved apology on its front page

It was done delibrately by NYT and Chris.

Please review this link as it relates to "double standard" in this BO pastor issue.

thanks

I can just imagine the NYT reaction to a Herbert or Kristof column that erred because of infromation they used from Media Matters, Daily KOS or Talking Points Memo

Dear Times Readers,

I am a partisan hack. But your subscription fees pay my salary. Ha-ha!

Sincerely,

Billy Kristol

They should RETRACT it and FIRE Kristol!

Seconded.

They should RETRACT it and FIRE Kristol!

Make that three.

He added an addenda to the top and left the slander in the piece.

I know this will screw with the Times layout, but they need to pull that story down or have Kristol rewrite it.

Then they need to fire him.

PWNED!

He's added a correction to the header, but did not correct the story. What the f***???

I sent the following correction to the Times on March 12. I have not received anything other than an automated response:

In the "Political Memo" by Patrick Healy in the March 12 edition, Harold Ickes makes a factual assertion that is demonstrably false. He stated, regarding states won by Barack Obama in the Democratic primary process: "Most of those states haven't voted Democratic in a presidential [election] since the Johnson landslide over Goldwater in 1964, and we don't see that changing."

In fact, Obama has won 26 states (27 including the District of Columbia) in 2008. Fifteen of these 26 states (16 of 27, counting D.C.) have voted Democratic in at least one election since 1992. Ten states (Washington, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Hawai'i) (plus D.C.) voted Democratic as recently as 2004. An eleventh state (Iowa) voted Democratic in 2000. Two more (Missouri and Louisiana) voted Democratic in 1996. Yet two more (Colorado and Georgia) voted Democratic in 1992. (Incidentally, so did Montana, a state Obama is expected to win).

Please run a correction of this demonstrably false statement by Mr. Ickes.

This is really, really upsetting.

Newsmax has absolutely ZERO credibility and has been caught with bogus stories before. They make a ridiculous claim, provide no evidence and then....GET QUOTED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES! I find that simply incredible. Nor does a retraction undo the damage of having this story percolating around the Internet all day.

I feel very badly for Obama. It seems to me that as long as religious leaders stick to wishing damnation on gays, women who want reproductive rights, muslims and etc, they can get invited to the White House and embraced by politicians. But if you are black, and you have some ideas that are out of the mainstream, then you can be used to swiftboat a decent man that should be President. What a shitty deal that is.

I agree with you, Anna. White Americans should be very, very slow to judge what gets said about America in a black church. It's a bit disgusting to watch the talking heads profess to have understood everything about Wright's character from watching about a minute and a half of video. As a Jewish American, I hope no one ever starts judging individual Jews based on what gets said in synagogues, which are far more "nationalist" etc, than Trinity. Everyone should see this for what it is: an effort by Fox News to boost its tanking ratings by re-polarizing the electorate. It is not news by any respectable measure.

News would be kristol getting something right.

If Bill Kristol was a financial markets trader, who put money down on his predictions and analysis, I think he would have "blown up" several years ago.

There is a huge moral hazard going on in our country, where those who wear the mantle of Expertise are, in fact, clowns.

And they keep getting hired, and enabled.

Had the Times looked at or cared about Kristol's actual record, things could have been different.

Yes, this is nothing more than a Festival of Clowns.

The entire society has circled the wagons, to try and stop Obama. The victories, the votes, and the huge crowds were fine as a novelty--but--the powers-that-be got very nervous when he started to sustain it. Hillary Clinton, George Bush, the Republicans--he's up against them all.

"Enough with the speeches and the big rallies" --Hillary Clinton on Barack Obama.

Ah yes. The battle cry, of the untalented.

Thanks so much for digging into this story and getting out the truth!

Interesting article on Huffington Post:

When Senator Obama's preacher thundered about racism and injustice Obama suffered smear-by-association. But when my late father -- Religious Right leader Francis Schaeffer -- denounced America and even called for the violent overthrow of the US government, he was invited to lunch with presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr.

Every Sunday thousands of right wing white preachers (following in my father's footsteps) rail against America's sins from tens of thousands of pulpits. They tell us that America is complicit in the "murder of the unborn," has become "Sodom" by coddling gays, and that our public schools are sinful places full of evolutionists and sex educators hell-bent on corrupting children. They say, as my dad often did, that we are, "under the judgment of God." They call America evil and warn of immanent destruction. By comparison Obama's minister's shouted "controversial" comments were mild. All he said was that God should damn America for our racism and violence and that no one had ever used the N-word about Hillary Clinton.

WHAT MEDIA IS NOT REPORTING: RE: TRINITY CHURCH!

Rev. Thomas (Pastor of Mainly White Congreation of UCC) denounces e-mail smear campaign against UCC’s largest congregation - Written by J. Bennett Guess, Jan. 11, 2008

Obama, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, has been a member of Trinity UCC for 20 years." "Trinity UCC is rooted in and proud of its Afrocentric heritage," Thomas said. "This is no different than the hundreds of UCC churches from the German Evangelical and Reformed stream that continue to own and celebrate their German heritage, insisting on annual sausage and sauerkraut dinners and singing Stille Nacht on Christmas Eve. ." While Trinity UCC is predominately African American, it does include and welcome non-Black members. The Rev. Jane Fisler-Hoffman, Illinois Conference Minister, who is white, has been a member of the congregation for years.

"Trinity is a destination church for many members of the UCC, a multi-racial, multi-cultural denomination that is largely Caucasian," Thomas pointed out. "When in Chicago, many UCC members flock to Trinity to share in and learn from its vibrant ministries, dynamic worship and justice-minded membership. Contrary to the claims made in these hateful emails, UCC members know Trinity to be one of the most welcoming, hospitable and generous congregations in our denomination." [...]

Rev. Steve] Gray, a member of First Congregational UCC in Indianapolis (mainly caucasian), has worshiped several times at Trinity UCC and is most impressed by the overflowing sense of welcome it extends to visitors. "When you're Euro-American, (White) the people [at Trinity UCC] are so exceedingly gracious, warm and welcoming. They hug you and say, 'Welcome to our church!'"

This ramped-up smear campaign against the UCC's largest congregation and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's home church — Trinity UCC in Chicago — has raised the ire of the Rev. John H. Thomas, the UCC's general minister and president, who called the e-mail-driven claims "absurd, mean-spirited and politically motivated."

The Main Stream Media has been filled with images and video of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's controversial statements for the past four days, 24/7, which Obama has strongly condemned. My concern, however, relates to equal time. When Senator Obama, who, after all , is actually the Candidate, gave a speech in Indiana, addressing his faith, diversity, and unity, and Invoking Robert Kennedy, it has gotten such a tiny percentage of coverage in comparison to Rev. Wright's controversial statements shown every hour in the hour. The main stream media has asked the questions how is Obama to deal with this controversy and when he does they give very little air time to his Answer, which he spells out beautifully in this Indiana Speech. This is just not Right.

Here is the link to the transcript/video of Obama's speech. Let's urge our friends in the blogosphere, and in every level of media, to Air this and to tell the whole picture, not just a part of it, regarding The Trinity Church which Obama belongs to.

Here's the correction:
Kristol correction

This Obama pastor thing is a right-wing hit job, with an assist from Hillary Clinton's supporters.

The underlying critique of Obama here is: See, he is black after all! This is difficult for Obama to respond to because his motivations for sticking with Trinity were probably similar to the real motivations *most* Americans probably have for staying with their churches - they're looking for community, for a place to belong, for a place to raise a family. They don't necessarily believe that their church holds the only answer, or even the best answer - but it still remains their church and their community. But if Obama were to explain this, it'd sound half-a*sed.

the problem for the NYT is that this information that Obama was NOT at the July 22rd service was on the Obama Fact Check yesterday--

So this was readily available BEFORE this went to press and of all papers the NYT should have a fact check BEFORE publishing something

I think the Time also needs their ombudsman to state this correction on Sunday as that is more widely read

The NYT continues to inflict damage on the Obama camapign in the support of their Publisher who pushed Hillary Clinton's endorsement through
the rest of the editorial board

disappointing

From the Newsmax article:

The Obama campaign has told members of the press that Senator Obama was not in church on the day cited, July 22, because he had a speech he gave in Miami at 1:30 PM. Our writer, Jim Davis, says he attended several services at Senator Obama's church during the month of July, including July 22. The church holds services three times every Sunday at 7:30 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central time. While both the early morning and evening service allowed Sen. Obama to attend the service and still give a speech in Miami, Mr. Davis stands by his story that during one of the services he attended during the month of July, Senator Obama was present and sat through the sermon given by Rev. Wright as described in the story. Mr. Davis said Secret Service were also present in the church during Senator Obama's attendance. Mr. Davis' story was first published on Newsmax on August 9, 2007. Shortly before publication, Mr. Davis contacted the press office of Sen. Obama several times for comment about the Senator's attendance and Rev. Wright's comments during his sermon. The Senator's office declined to comment.

That's going to come out, if it's true. So you might want to put your party hats away.

That's going to come out, if it's true. So you might want to put your party hats away.

So they claim that Obama was in attendance, but they can't even figure out which day he was there? That's some real crack reporting right there.

Face it - they tried to run with a false smear on Obama, got caught, and are now trying to backtrack while still getting the lie out there. Classic right-wing smear tactics.

Thank you, Marc, for pointing out the error early this morning.

I red Newsmax. I smart, yes?

The impression of Obama as Opportunistic Liar who GRADUALLY AND RELUCTANTLY OWNS UP TO HIS MISTAKES WHEN COMPLETELY CORNERED is seeping into the public consciousness. That takes a lot of the sting out of any "correction" concerning information about him.

Certainly the campaign has shown no hesitation themselves about lying about their activities and events. Even if the details change, there remains AN OVERALL ABIDING SMELL OF CORRUPTION AND SELF SERVING OPPORTUNISM, that will never be scrubbed away. The Candidate of Change and Hope is a Cheap Fraud.

So they claim that Obama was in attendance, but they can't even figure out which day he was there? That's some real crack reporting right there.

There's no "they". The guy's name is Jim Davis. He gave the story to Obama's staff and they didn't quibble with it.

Maybe it was July 22nd or maybe it wasn't (although the timing does allow it). But back in August, no one in the Obama staff thought the story remarkable in any way. Whether or not the date is right, it seems hard to believe the story isn't correct if they allowed it to print without protest.

You can tell the NYT is panicked - they couldn't even manage to spell 'campaign' correctly in the 'correction'.
