April Fools! Clinton Plays Joke On Press Corps

01 Apr 2008 01:48 pm

She's dropping.... a bowling challenge.

"It's time fo rhis campaign to get out of the gutter and allow all of the pins to be counted."

I swear she freaks me out. Did you see her telling the 'joke'.
Its like some scary ass head teacher giving a lame joke.
I swear she gave me the chills when she gave it.
Even when she tells a 'joke' she sounds like a female version of Nixon.

Honest, I kept an open mind. I had every intention of enjoying the joke. But after fifteen seconds, it becomes increasingly clear that even her humor is fake, stilted, scripted, drawn out far too long and in the end painful -- like the campaign itself.
Blecch.

Would like to see them bowl though. Obama could get a little practice in and prove that he's a quick learn.

I'm a die hard Obama supporter but I thought this was pretty funny. Of course she knows she'll totally kick his ass. Obama needs those bumpers when he bowls (full disclosure- I totally need those bumpers). Curious to see how he responds.

Since she's counting pins, does that make her a pinhead?

Jesus God. I loved that he bowled for sh*t, with a sh*teating grin. Why are people wishing he was a better bowler, or got some practice, or picked something else to do in front of cameras? It was fabulous.

Can we all just take a joke... God. Obama supporters are like rabid dogs sometimes.

Yes we can take a joke, but she'll have to give us one first.
Her fake seriousness is so frakkin smirky that it does make me foam and cower. I can't help it. She is entirely without irony and assumes her audience is made up of complete morons. She even explains that it's April fools. Creepy Creepy Creepy. There's nothing worse than wanting to laugh and cringing instead.
This is one more disturbing example of how both sides must be filtering the candidates through all kinds of assumptions and preconceptions.
I cannot for the life of me imagine how anyone can see this woman as genuine, any more than I can believe George Bush's Cowboy of the People routine.
That said, I understand that many people see Obama's speech as mere rhetoric. But for me there's nothing "mere" about it. His speeches are signposted as rhetoric - as attempts to convince by argument - and so they seem much more honest than all these attempts to sound like Joe sixpack.
And on second thought, I do think it's pretty cool that he can happily suck at bowling.

He should do it but up the ante with a game of hoops.

Cog:

You didn't want to laugh. You just wanted to cringe.

Tim: Who's rabid now? At least I'm (painfully)aware of my own bias.

Just. Not. Funny. ...... (. To. Me. ).

Cog

At least she kept a straight face when delivering her "challenge". You gotta give her props for something.

But I'm pretty sure, with some time to practice, that Obama would beat her at bowling. His learning curve has been steep throughout the campaign, and he's shown himself quite capable of self-improvement throughout.

Why should the next 10 frames he bowls be any different?

This is not a happy woman. The joke was too long, and she looked like she was going to explode as she told it . . .explode in anger. She is holding in a lot of rage.

Who told her to give this inane skit? She is too scripted. I understand the intent was to give her some air time on television, but when you have to resort to silly April Fool's jokes to get media attention, it's sort of pointless and merely shows that her campaign is in its death throes.

And -- bonus! -- when people do see this skit on television, they will cringe like Cog above, or like me, not because I thought of her as a school marm, but because I just sensed a lot of anger in her persona, a lot of suppressed irritation. Her ego is wounded, she's losing, and she knows it.

You posters are too serious. I thought this was pretty funny. Oh, yeah, and I am an Obama supporter. Thanks for the smile, Hillary!

Transfat,

I fully agree, though at least part of what makes me cringe is embarrassment for her. (I'm one of those people who has no real reaction to sex or violence on TV, but if someone's making an ass of themselves, I find I have to cover my eyes and ears)Obama says in his second book that one of the main motivators behind politicians comprimising their principles or pandering for votes is fear of public humiliation. Most of us left that fear behind in high school, but politicians deal with it daily and it must crush your soul after twenty years. And Hillary's been humiliated BIG time at least once. Her anger is perhaps all she has left to drive her through that fear. Scary.

Ho ho ho ho ho ho! .....penned by Penn and
delivered with comic brilliance...Ho ho ho
...I can't stop laughi........

Watergate-Era Judiciary Chief of Staff: Hillary Clinton Fired For Lies, Unethical Behavior

As Hillary Clinton came under increasing scrutiny for her story about facing sniper fire in Bosnia, one question that arose was whether she has engaged in a pattern of lying.

The now-retired general counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee, who supervised Hillary when she worked on the Watergate investigation, says Hillary’s history of lies and unethical behavior goes back farther – and goes much deeper – than anyone realizes.

Jerry Zeifman, a lifelong Democrat, supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair. When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation – one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman’s 17-year career.

Why?

"Because she was a liar," Zeifman said in an interview last week. "She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality." . . .

...Zeifman says that Hillary, along with Marshall, Nussbaum and Doar, was determined to gain enough votes on the Judiciary Committee to change House rules and deny counsel to Nixon. And in order to pull this off, Zeifman says Hillary wrote a fraudulent legal brief, and confiscated public documents to hide her deception....

The brief was so fraudulent and ridiculous, Zeifman believes Hillary would have been disbarred if she had submitted it to a judge.

...Zeifman says he was urged by top committee members to keep a diary of everything that was happening. He did so, and still has the diary if anyone wants to check the veracity of his story. Certainly, he could not have known in 1974 that diary entries about a young lawyer named Hillary Rodham would be of interest to anyone 34 years later.

But they show that the pattern of lies, deceit, fabrications and unethical behavior was established long ago – long before the Bosnia lie, and indeed, even before cattle futures, Travelgate and Whitewater – for the woman who is still asking us to make her president of the United States.

Actually, as someone who is often pained by her attempts at humor, this is quite good up until she starts trying to tie it into her argument about staying in.

The cold delivery is perfect, because its exactly how she would deliver a real proposal if she were to do so. Well done.

This style of humor reminds me of an anecdote that was told about her sense of humor, how when she was working in a law firm, and there was pizza served, she saved her piece for later, only to have it eaten. Upon discovering that it was eaten, she circulated a memo around the office asking "Has anyone seen the piece of pizza that was evidence in my poisoning case?"

You people are crazy.

The cold delivery is perfect, because its exactly how she would deliver a real proposal if she were to do so.
You see this is what I don't quite get. Not to put too fine a point on it, she never delivers a real proposal that "coldly" precisely because she is so afraid of seeming inhuman. So the minute she puts on her somber face here, she gives away the joke. She just can't win in this particular game. The only way I can imagine this being genuinely funny would have been as one item slipped into an otherwise serious list of talking points delivered in her usual manner without comment. That might have made an audience of journalists go "What the f*ck?' and been a bona fide April Fools gag. As it stands, she just seems to be crying "Look at me! I'm funny!!!"

I have to second Tim K here. And YLight - that's actually pretty funny.

Obamanut here, I thought it was pretty good. He should immediately hit back with a basketball challenge.

Amazing. Obviously I accept that funny is subjective. But again and again I'm seeing that the different camps in this contest don't just disagree, they actually perceive the world differently in fundamental ways. How can we hope to fairly and rationally choose a candidate?
Are we doomed to choosing a president whom more people "identify" with for all kinds of superficial reasons? I used to mock people for choosing Bush because the thought he was regular Joe just like them; I'm beginning to suspect I like Obama because he's a complex Joe just like me. Is that any fairer?

I'm a member of Obama's zombie-cult army, and I thought this was charming. 55's right, though, she doesn't stand a chance against Barack in a game of HORSE.

Terrifying. Sounds like she's delivering a death sentence. Really.

The press didn't seem to find it too hilarious. If she had challenged him to a test of who can tell the tallest tale it would have hit a much funnier, more self-effacing note. But Hillary doesn't have a real sense of humor and doesn't realize that.

This was just a lame attempt to keep the bowling story in the news.

Obama supporter here, thought it was pretty good.

you do of course get the self serving as opposed to self deprecating humor being used by hillary here, that she would probably win AND that obama is not good company for people in a blue collar setting. nobody you would like to have a beer with, play a working man's game with. sure, he would be too intellectual for that. bite me hillary!

It wasn't a bad joke. It just went on too long.

Only problem was Hillary didn't laugh herself when she told the punch line. But that's OK, she's running for president, not comedian of the year. It was a pretty funny idea. She pulled off the beginning great. It really looked like she was going to have bad news.

Funny in a lame and sad kind of way. Like when a company ceo gets up and tries to relate with younger employees by making slighly-off popular culture refernces....Think Mr. Burns...

Hillary Clinton Fondly Recalls Leading Arkansas to 1994 NCAA Title

Asked by a reporter if she was participating in an NCAA Tournament pool today, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wowed media members by recalling the magical run the Arkansas Razorbacks made to the 1994 championship – a run Clinton says she fueled by averaging 38 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, good enough to be named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

“The mid-90s were a tough time for Arkansas with Bill and I off to the White House,” said Clinton. “We felt the hard-working men and women there needed something to uplift them. Bill was wrapped up in various things, so it was left to me to go down there and win them a championship. And I did.”

Clinton says her championship illustrates a big difference between herself and her rival, Sen. Barack Obama.

“He likes to talk about how he is a basketball player, how he was a sixth man in high school, how he still plays pick-up games,” said Clinton. “But he never led a team to a national championship. I have. I have years of experience playing basketball. He has one left-hand dribble.”

The junior senator from New York says she will never forget the 1994 championship game.

“We had Corliss Williamson, Scotty Thurman – good players,” said Clinton. “But we were going up against Duke, a powerhouse. We didn’t have a chance without me bringing my A-game. But you all know I never duck from a fight.”

Clinton recalls one series of plays in the second half that allowed the Razorbacks to pull away.

“Cherokee Parks got the ball down low in the post and had great position on Corliss,” she said. “He had an easy lay-up to tie the game. But I came flying in and just swatted that sh-t out out of there. Just jumped up, ripped the ball out of the air and came down with it. I had to have been two feet above the rim. At least. Maybe more. I remember almost catching my chin on the top of the backboard. Then I pushed it up court, went behind my back to get past Chris Collins at midcourt, and then just f—king dunked right on Grant Hill’s head. Just right on his motherf—king head. I mean, I teabagged the kid. I remember hanging on the rim screaming and my balls were dangling on his head. And that was pretty much the game right there. We were national champions.”

Questioned by a reporter who said there is no record of Clinton on the 1994 Razorbacks, Clinton said she may have remembered incorrectly.

“Well, that’s what I recall happening,” she said. “But, who knows. It was many years ago. I may be wrong. Perhaps I just watched the game on TV at the White House. But let’s not get off the main point here: Barack Obama hates white people. White people and America. White people, America and Christians."

Let's just say that Hillary tells a joke as well as Barack bowls. And leave it at that.

Let's just say that Hillary tells a joke as well as Barack bowls.

Comedy is about timing. When youre not dodging sniper fire maybe you could give Sinbad a call and ask him about it.

Wow, this is a great test of political rabidity. If you don't find it refreshing that she can do a little self-irony with a straight face you've lost your perspective (maybe because Andrew has...). And I'm speaking as someone who dreams of the day I wake up to see "Hillary concedes" on the front page of the morning paper -- the sooner the better.

Jeez, people, lighten up. I'm a diehard Obama guy but I thought this was pretty cute.

She should've magnanimously offered Obama the v.p. position in order to unify the party. That would've been a good April Fool's Day gag.

I heard Hillary compare herself to Rocky yesterday, which made me snork my coffee, because-*duh*-Rocky loses in the end.

She needs to think before she speaks-unless, hmm...

was she conceding???

I'm not at all a fan of Hillary, but I tried to give her a chance on this joke.

I did think it went on a bit too long, and it was also obnoxious that she felt it necessary to "clue everyone in" to it being April Fools Day.

My biggest problem, however, was with all of the semi-attacks on Obama. "it's time for his campaign to get out of the gutter and allow all of the pins to be counted". I can just imagine the glee with which the speech writers tackled this one.

Unfortunately, I think it would have been much more effective if she'd just stopped after issuing the initial challenge. Or better yet if her April Fools announcement would have been a self-effacing spin on the whole Bosnia fiasco.

But that's really not her style. With Hillary, a joke can't just be a joke - it must remain a weapon. Which is probably why I didn't find much humor in it.

I've come to seriously dislike both Clintons, but that was funny.
