McCain's American Story Prepares To Challenge Obama's American Story

03 Apr 2008 07:22 am

JACKSONVILLE -- Picture it: At the Naval Academy, John McCain was a small, skinny rambunctious young adult, conceited and “stupid,” who ignored the rules and earned enough demerits, he says, to be forced to march to Baltimore and back 17 times. He rebelled against the starchy discipline of his military family and life, but his country kept giving back. But somehow, maybe by osmosis, the code of the Navy was imprinted on his conscience, and because of it – really, only because of it, McCain survived five years of imprisonment and torture. When he finally was released, all he wanted to do was to give back and to urge Americans to serve an interest greater than themselves.

Relax. I have not fallen for McCain. I’m just communicating the version of the story the campaign hopes Americans will learn. And in truth, it is a compelling story, made all the more so by its basis in truth. No embellishment necessary -- just a good writer, which McCain has in Mark Salter.

McCain’s biographical tour, billed as an effort to “reintroduce him” to America, is, needless to say, accomplishing that task inefficiently. The tour is not on the front page of newspapers. Evening news broadcasts are covering it perfunctorily – but more out of an obligation to give McCain some airtime. The real action in the Republican Party is elsewhere, in New Mexico, where Republican state chairs are meeting with McCain campaign strategists to plot out the next six months.

Besides, Americans already know McCain.

Private polling shared recently with McCain’s strategists shows that, under the right conditions, Americans were ready to embrace McCain as the agent of change they’ve been waiting for. (Where have I heard that bef……oh…..) The polling, and the developing strategy, hinges on McCain’s convincing those Obama-loving independents that McCain is known commodity who embodies change and that Obama’s story is just that – a story and his rhetoric is mere words. Obama may run on his biography, but McCain will run as biography; he is who he says he is; you know him; you trust him; and you’re comfortable with him. McCain is an open book; Obama is…well, more of a mystery.

There’s a deeper, more holistic messaging attempt at work. McCain often likes to say that the country owes him nothing, but McCain owes the country everything. By contrast, McCain advisers believe that Obama’s core message is arrogance: America has problems, and only Obama can fix them; he deserves the presidency. (An irony: the incarnation of JFK – Obama – cast as the foil to Kennedy’s most famous maxim.)

McCain advisers have thought a lot about the next few months.

They’ve planned a calendar full of events – twelve weeks, to be exact, including several policy rollouts, high-profile visits to places Republicans don’t usually campaign, and more aggressive efforts to rope in the conservative base through outreach and private visits. (Rush Limbaugh will be approached through allies.)
They’ve set a fairly modest budget of about $50 million.

“Holistically,” as in, frequently and deliberately, McCain will communicate broadly (appearances on David Letterman), narrowly (weekly blogger calls) and locally (through town meetings). The Straight Talk Express will continue, albeit with reporters pooling their coverage, and with TSA
security screenings before the rented Jet Blue E190.

The campaign has not foreclosed the idea of running against Hillary Clinton, but most of his advisers have Barack Obama in mind when they think about their opponent.

Just wait until 30 other cell mates will testify that he was a collaborator with the enemy who ratted on his fellow prisoners to get himself more food and early release.

I heard they interviewed at least 10 rats and 20 cockroaches that will attest to that story.

OBAMA LIES IN PENNSYLVANIA AD
It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices. In his ad, Obama says, I'm Barack Obama, and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists, and I won't let them block change any more. Obama has been the recipient of more than $220,000 from the oil and gas industry just since as of Feb/08. Two of Obama's campaign bundlers are also CEOs for oil and gas companies, per his campaign Web site? Obama needs to answer to VOTERS about his dealings with one of his largest contributors Exelon, a big nuclear power company that he cut deals behind closed doors protecting them from full disclosure in the nuclear industry. Exxon, Shell, and others are among his biggest donors

Obama said he goofed on votes angered fellow Democrats in the Senate when he voted to strip millions of dollars from a child welfare office on Chicago's West Side. But Obama had a ready explanation: He goofed! Also announced he had fumbled an election-reform vote the day before, on a measure that passed 51 to 6. The next day, he acknowledged voting "present" on a key telecommunications vote. He stood on March 11, 1999, to take back his vote against legislation to end good-behavior credits for certain felons in county jails. "I pressed the wrong button on that," he said. Obama was the lone dissenter on Feb. 24, 2000, against 57 yeas for a ban on human cloning. "I pressed the wrong button by accident," he said. But two of Obama's bumbles came on more-sensitive topics, he backed legislation to permit riverboat casinos to operate even when the boats were dockside. The measure, pushed by the gambling industry and fought by church groups whose support Obama was seeking, passed with two "yeas" to spare -- including Obama's. Moments after its passage he rose to say, explaining that he had mistakenly voted for it.

Marc,

Can you insist on original content for your comments?

The spam is detracting from the fun.

Can something be done about these hysterical mental cases spamming the comments?

The only problem with Mc's characterization of Obama is that Obama doesn't say he can fix it, he says that we can fix it.

Could you please refrain from parroting the phrase Straight Talk Express?

Perhaps some context should be added whenever talking about the money McCain spends this primary and how it is in violation of the FEC campaign rules that McCain himself wrote.

There is an Obama-arrogance issue, but it was much more of a problem (and then a small one) in January--he really has become a better campaigner. I doubt this one gains a lot of traction.

I fear October will be "You're a phony," "No, you're a phony" month, but maybe the determination of both men to claw their way out of the silly tank can overcome their mutual distaste.

Can I pause to giggle hysterically that McCain needs to approach Rush through intermediaries, while Bill Clinton had no problem getting on the show and sharing a strong "Vote for Hillary" message? In that GQ interview, did Rove say anything at all negative about Clinton, or did he hue closely to the "we in the Republican party have nothing but respect and warm thoughts about the good Senator" line?

This is just atmospherics that overlooks the manifest reality: a majority of Americans don't want to stay in Iraq for up to 100 years, and they don't want a continuation of Bush's failed economic policies.

When you add in the fact that McCain looks older than his mother, the manifest reality is that he cannot win.

McCain bringing change? are you JOKING??

McCain = Bush's third term

More war, sending more of our kids to die in a endless war, having now knowledge of economy is NOT CHANGE but it is MORE OF SAME.

Only change McCain will bring is a angry, hot tempered very old man in WH.

Talk about rhetoric... John McCain must clearly articulate his position in Iraq and convince the American people why it is in our best interests and in the best interests of the region to remain there for even 4 more years. He must also clearly tell us how we will pay for all of this and why I would want to. And if the paying for it is through tax cuts that will spur on the economy we need to see direct proof of this "theory." Oh, and remind me again how keeping our soldiers in Iraq is fighting the terrorists? And he has to STOP the ridiculous rhetoric that it's our "duty" and "honor" and that we must "win" and "not be defeated."

And if he can't even be clear on the war in Iraq god help us about his clarity on the economy. Once again it's all about tax cuts and the free market. Once again, spell out the proof how this is going to help the economy. Then tell me how we are going to improve the job market, improve our schools, and provide a less expensive health care system.

He has said nothing that is different from how Bush is running his administration - the do nothing but go to war administration. I agree with Ab: McCain=Bush's third term. The man has done nothing to distinguish himself from Bush. If that's not enough to get people to vote for a Democratic I don't know what is.

Ab> More war, sending more of our kids to die in a endless war,

Considering that most of those "kids" have either joined or re-upped since the beginning of the war, I'd say they feel a bit different than you. I would also suggest that those men and women, those warriors might object to being called "kids".

Ab> having now knowledge of economy is NOT CHANGE but it is MORE OF SAME.

I agree that his understanding of economics is weak but then again neither of his opponents show much understanding the issue either. Mouthing platitudes and raising taxes doesn't mean that they really understand the issues. They are both lawyers at the end of the day.

SN> And he has to STOP the ridiculous rhetoric that it's our "duty" and "honor" and that we must "win" and "not be defeated."

If you require an explanation for why being being seen as being defeated by an enemy who's selling point is being the "strong horse" vs the "weak horse" then you are a lost cause. The "kids" certainly understand the stakes and signed up to fight and win.

Obama and Clinton have lost any little respect I had for them. Pull our troops out of Iraq and so many husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters died for nothing. This tells me he doesn't give a hoot about those who died so that we don't have to fight this war in our own country. He and Mrs. Clinton are both weak and think only of themselves. And then we will have another 911. And who they going to blame that on? The 1st Clinton administration did nothing about the bombings that took place on that watch why would his wife be any different?

EricP:
The point is our soldiers ARE dying for nothing already. More death wont make them better deaths. The president has never made a convincing case for this war.
