Barack Obama raised $40m from 442,000 donors in March, of which 218,000 were new.

Isn't it more than 218,000 new donors and more than 442,000 total contributors for March? That is how Halperin and Ben Smith are reporting it.
Pretty darn good considering this was clearly his toughest month. I second the call for those tax returns and also raise the call for earmarks and foundation donor info.
Wow. That's incredible for a month in which Obama had his worst month of the campaign so far (losing TX & OH, followed by the Wright controversy). Wow. Gobama!
His campaign said the average donation was $96, but $40 million divided by 218,000 donors is an average donation of $183. To get to $96 you'd have to have those 218,000 donors donating $96 twice in one month. Either $96 is wrong, or Obama's small donors are doing some kind of biweekly tithing.
Whoops. Never mind.
T-Rock, I think that's 218,000 NEW donors. In Obama's worst month politically, he raised more than Clinton did in her best fund-raising month. Time to pay off your debts and drop out, Senator Clinton! Atleast you'll be able to avoid releasing your tax returns...
Waiting for Howard Wolfson or some other Clinton hired dog to come out and say "see, Obama's losing this thing, because he raised less in March than he did in February!"
And to think that Clinton said his support was "an illusion". That's one amazing $40 million sleight-of-hand! She's toast.
T-Rock, the math works $96 avg donation X 442,000 total donators = $42,432,000!!!

Howard Wolfson said that the Clinton campaign will not release its March fundraising total until the filing deadline of April 20th. They are done.
I bet if Hillary asked nicely Barack would give her a loan.
By the Clintons not releasing their fundraising until the deadline of Apr 20 we already know it will be bad for them and far less than Obama's. Of course we also know the Clintons have a tendency to pad their numbers and cover up their debts, to make things look better than they are. My guess is that the Clinton camp is in far worse debt than what has been revealed at this point in time. The Clintons are staying in the race to get more money to pay off their debts. They hope to con more people out of their hard earned money. Just say no to Hillary!
I think their debt is far worse than indicated, too. At this point, it's not difficult to believe that Hillary's staying in the race to earn enough money so they don't have to pay the poor vendors they stiffed out of pocket. The Clintons do NOT like to pay their bills. Wolfson announced the tax returns will be out today or tomorrow. My bet is late tomorrow -- try to throw them out with the weekend trash. Good luck with that.
Look for the Clintons to release their latest numbers at, oh, about 7 or 8 pm some Friday evening.
The Clintons are staying in the race to get more money to pay off their debts. No, she's trying to recover that $5 million loan. Do you really think she'll pay off the small vendors before covering her own personal losses? And Mark Penn is apparently still owed a big chunk. Do you think some small time vendor from Iowa is getting their tens of thousands before Mark Penn gets his millions?
He won't last,, people are not as dumb as the media has you believing.
In the interest of accuracy, please change this headline to "More Than $40M" or "At Least $40M." That's what the campaign actually is reporting.
This is a key parameter that should go into the supercomputer the superdelegates are using to make their superdecisions. I love being part of this movement--we're trying, in our $96 average way, to tell the world this man is the one we'll support and work for for President. They ignore these voices at their peril, imho.

Beth in VA - I think you've got it right. I know politicians are wary of the guy that "gets out the youth vote" and "energizes the base", because it fails them so often, and they always like a familiar face, but I don't see how they can ignore the consistent results from the Obama camp. Dean should have perked their ears in 2004; 2006 should have gotten their rapt attention. They ignore 2008, like you say, at their own peril.
Meme,, you might (possibly) have point. I say that, because I have absolutely know idea what you're saying. I'm pretty sure most people are not as dumb as you, so if I wouldn't put too much stock in your "expert" opinion.
On April 20th they have to release the debts, loans, and spending limits, too, right? That's what happened last month--$35 million announced at the beginning, and (of which we can only use 1/3) and (which barely covers our existing unpaid bills, if we actually paid them, which we aren't) trickled out a few weeks later. A little part of me dares to hope this could be done by the end of April. (I've been predicting she'd go through January.) Even the McCain ad--going out with a hint of grace, fire directed at the Republicans, preserving their stature in part? I'm thinking the repeated Richardson salvos, transparently stupid as they seem, are not an attempt to get the supers in line. In NC Bill wouldn't accept that the black vote was departing, and campaigned so agressively and woundedly he ensured even more of it departed. Similarly, I suspect the Clinton/Carvilles really do see Richardson's endorsement as the ultimate betrayal of their faithless lackey, and if they just explain it one more time are convinced people will finally understand and switch to their side.
a. That's a 21% increase in his donor base in one month, and this was a tough month. Total contributors now exceed 1,276,000 according to the campaign. That's the most significant number -- you gotta figure that the first million donors are the low-hanging fruit, so to speak, and each new 100,000 is harder to get than the last 100,000. b. And 21% of his existing base came back and chipped in a little more in March. That's the benefit of having the large base to start with.
Excellent breakdown Colin. That really puts things in perspective!
from swimming freestyle: "The stated Clinton campaign strategy, despite her second place position in each metric (states won, pledged delegates and popular vote), is to convince superdelegates she is the best choice for the Democratic Party nominee. It's a measure of Clinton power and prestige that some actually bought into that line of crap. The, presumably disappointing, March fundraising numbers are just more signs the Clinton campaign is now limping towards the end of their race." http://swimmingfreestyle.typepad.com
We need media to be asking about: Specifics on unpaid bills. Have they been paid, and where's the documentation? Previous years' tax returns Earmark info Clinton library donor info.
I think the Obama campaign had a little fun with this. They dropped the presumptive number - remember the $30 million number - To force the Clinton campaign to respond. They've figured out that the MSM NEVER calls the Clintons on their fundraising ' creative math'. Force the Clinton to drop some of their 'creative math - around $20 million - and it seems sort of close behind Obama, but not all that much. Once they've dropped that, here comes the Obama with the truth.. 40 MILLION. BAM in what everyone would consider to be their worst month. 40 MILLION DOUBLE what the Clinton campaign originally claimed. Yes, I think the Obama folks just had a little bit of fun.

Speculation: Remember how Obama granted the Rezko interview when Wright was peaking? And that's worked pretty well for him. Perhaps the taxes are coming out on the heels of that lower fundraising number to get it all out of the way at once. Could we hope for earmarks? (If much of her fundraising's from maxed out donors padding her total--and last month it was 2/3--then her campaign is in serious financial trouble, as anyone looking at bill -aying and ad-buying can see. I believe we get those numbers with FEC filings on the 20th?)
Obama knowing what you do about funds raised, why don't you come clean and tell the people who don't already know. where the majority of your funds are coming from. We know the average American is not giving you that kind of money, but we do know the Rich ones that can and are.

Whoa. I honestly expected it to be close to 30, maybe mid 20s as we settled into the grinding pace of Waiting for Hillary to Exit.
Critical question for both campaigns: how much is available to spend in the primary? I don't want any squeeing over totals that are significantly untouchable (anything over 1/4 of total being for general--Clinton getting away with her "record setting month" when almost 2/3 of it wasn't usable shouldn't happen again).
And, in the spirit of April, where're those tax returns?
