Sherman, Meet Petraeus

10 Apr 2008 05:35 pm

In an interview with Brian Williams, General David Petraeus seems to definitively rule out ever serving his country in an elected capacity:

Williams: General, will you ever hold political office in this country?

Petraeus: Never. And I've tried to say that on a number of occasions. Some folks have reminded me of a country western song that says "what part of no, don't you understand?"

Both Romney and Huckabee are breathing a big sigh of relief after this.

Did Julius Caesar hold political office, so to speak?

Now we just have to wait until Gen. Petraeus cross the Potomac.

Actually, Caesar held quite a number of political offices.

And the Weekly Standard wept.

Good, I always suspected Petraeus really was a man of honor. Now it's confirmed. After his generalship I'd love to see Petraeus as a Professor. Lord knows he'd make a great teacher and scholar.

But this does not preclude him holding an appointed post such as Cabinet Secreetary or Ambassador.

Julius Caesar was elected to every office he held from tribune to consul, even Dictator for Life (although after he marched on Rome, his main political rivals were dead or exiled, so those votes tended to be a foregone conclusion). Indeed, the pretext for marching on Rome was that he was not being allowed to run for office in absentia, as the Senate had allowed past generals such as Pompey the Great.
