"It's a Friday" You release bad news on a Friday. If Clinton's tax returns contain bad news for her, releasing them on a Friday isn't going to change anything.
Cadmus - I think it might take a full week for tax nerds to get anywhere with these taxes, but I do think you're right that the Yoo memo will get glossed over, and that makes me fuming mad - and I say that as someone who is in the military.
Wow. They've certainly made a lot of money. A lot more than I would've guessed. $52 mill for speeches? Let's see how this plays with the "working class" white Democrats that Hillary is counting on to give her PA. Obama should start saying "Say what you want about my speeches, but at least I'm not charging $100,000 for them."
At a glance, the most notable thing to me is the absence of 2007. Although it's perfectly reasonable to get an extension because of the vagaries re income from trusts -- I have done this every year since I was 21 -- I think for the Clintons, that not releasing 2007 hides the biggest elephant in the room, which is Bill's partnership income. That's Yucaipa they're trying to hide. I think his earnings from divesting from that partnership are going to be monumental. And if that's public, that's gonna be some ugly shit. Because lots of nasty people are involved with Yucaipa.

I just looked through 2006. All the schedules, all the worksheets are their. It looks pretty normal to me. The only thing notable is that they made a lot of money. I wish I made that much money. Good for them. So it took this long to make a few photocopies because...?
Although there is a lot of material to go through, I am struck by a few things: 1) How much money they made! Wow, and I was jealous of the Obamas. 2) The lack of details on where they got the money from. It just seems to indicate "speeches" without any more detail. We know that they get foreign tax credits but it does not say which countries (although I did see some mention of Australia and Canada). I suspect the devil is in the details. 3) They only give chartiable contributions to their foundation. Without knowing what that foundation does (for example, promoting Bill Clinton), this makes me suspicious. 4) All of the blind trusts make it hard to know where the money is coming from. Why do they still have blind trusts? Not a train wreck for them but not great, I think.

Arabella -- Bill Clinton has yet to divest from Yucaipa. He has made it very clear, through two different spokesmen, that he will divest only if Hillary Clinton actually gets the nomination. All he's doing now is putting in place a transition plan that would enable him to divest quickly, when and if that opportunity arises.

It appears Clinton uses a tax haven, Quellos, that was investigated by Congress while hearings on it were taking place. Why she would use this tax haven WHILE IT IS BEING INVESTIGATED BY CONGRESS is mind-boggling.

There's an awful lot of potential for corruption in that 109 million. And let's remember, the Clintons are not paid so much for creating a better widget or a better manufacturing process or for running a better restaurant or store. The Clintons are paid for who they are and for access to them. Bill has been going around selling access to a future Hillary administration, with who knows what favors promised. This is one of the main reasons to reject Hillary's candidacy; she would sell us out in huge ways.
The bottom line is the Senate is an institution that is the ultimate old boys club who cover each other's tails. Why, they can't even get rid of Larry Craig. This guy spent $213k of campaign funds to defend his little escapade in the bathroom when those funds are not supposed to be used for anything but things related to his official duties. Four things. 1. "Just words" seems to be pretty profitable for the Clintons, so I guess words do matter and words do put food on the table. 2. "I'm being outspent" is really not going to fly anymore with donors. Now that all her big donors are tapped out, how can you ask small donors to fund your campaign? 3. "Blue collar white guys", the soccer moms of this campaign may not feel that the Clintons represent them or their needs considering their vast wealth and the sources of it. The size isn't that big a deal--creates the appearance of some influence trades, but it's doubtful that'll be clear or easy to understand. Possibly one more nail, though: if voters ask "What'd they do to earn the money?" and "Why are they asking me for money?" and "Why was this a big secret?" it could be the few extra straws to either flip a voter, or make a supporter more comfortable with her eventual defeat. Over the last few months, my view of the taxes was that the big problem was creating the appearance of a scandal when there (presumably) wasn't one. That's still there. And reminiscent of too many 90s "we didn't do anything, but won't release the papers that would show it" scandals. The delayed filing of 2007 wouldn't be too significant except that Sheila Jackson Lee and every other surrogate spent February saying "Taxes! Ha ha! Have you filed your taxes yet?" and when the reporters and everyone else said "What's the problem with the 2006, 2005, etc taxes--because I could release mine in 5 minutes?" Jackson Lee would respond "Ha ha! I haven't filed my taxes this year! I'll bet you haven't either!" More of the "There's nothing to see here, but it's critical we throw up a bunch of double talk and refuse to release the stuff we say there's no trouble releasing."

Barack Obama, is speaking in Fort Wayne, Indiana today, where Bobby Kennedy broke the news of Martin Luther King's assassination in April 1968 and arguably saved many lives by quelling the riots that were sure to begin that night -- Instead of going to Memphis like Hillary Clinton and John McCain to pander and make good on poor past choices -- Barack Obama was in Indiana. And that is not answered in the false conclusions drawn in that article, which Wiliiams asked "what would Jesus do?" As a student of history surely Juan Williams knows that MLK Jr made some very incendiary speeches in his day - even calling the United States the worst war profiteer in the world - and much more Had YouTube existed in 1968 and MLK Jr's worst words been played on an "endless loop" on a then non-exitent internet, we, as a nation, may not have been celebrating the pride and dignity of this great man. Personally, as a white, jewish, over 50 woman voter who likes to get educated about who I am voting for; I have learned that Rev Wright gave up his student deferment and enlisted in the army during Viet Nam and was a Marine. If that type of personal sacrifice doesn't make a man a patriot - what does? Did Mr Juan Williams serve in the military? For the Juan Williams' of the world, who arguably owe at least some of their success to the legacy of Dr. King - to draw the argument "what would Jesus do" and come to the conclusion as stated here is laughable Let me suggest: Mr Williams and others; stop watching Fox News, and look at other sermons Rev Wright gave in their entireity which are readily available on the web and then go back and reread Dr King's words especially in his early, brave opposition to the Viet Nam way -- Rev Wright - who I am not defending - clearly through non violence, in his own way, tried and by all accounts, Rev. Wright right succeeded, in getting young black men to strive for a better life, for black families to stay together and generally was devoted to improving the quality of like for his parishioners. That would be to look at the total of the man and see clearly the good of the sum total of the life of the man far outweighing the bad -- and look beyond a few offensive sentences to the sum total of a life dedicated to helping others. You can disagree with the method - but you cannot disagree with the results. And on the 40th anniversary of MLK Jr's death - a dark day for this nation -we should all be grateful that in the 1960's when the civil rights movement did and said what they had to to make progress , against much hatred and opposition in the country - that there was no Fox News, no You Tube and no Internet Arguably - we may not be where we are today and celebrating the life of this great man - if there had been Let's not lose our chance to move forward and develop a new and living history; which I strongly believe Sen Barack Obama will inspire and lead.

DONATING OVER 10 MILLION DOLLARS TO CHARITY. I am happy that people like to bring this up, because the truth is that they DID NOT give $10m to charity. They gave $10m to the Clinton Family Foundation which is of course their own foundation. Charitable foundation are required to only give 5% of it's assets to charity. As of 12/31/06 it still had $4,383,401 in the bank. And that is out of only $7m in contributions, because they claim that they gave $3m in 2007. So, according to all accounts, the Clintons have actually only given here. I don't really care about what they did or didn't give to charity, but what I don't like the lack of truthfulness about their charitable giving. It is very "Clintonian" that I have sit here telling someone the difference between moving money to a family foundation and actually having that money reach charitable causes.
Edit to post above: they have only given $5m of the total $10m they claim in charitable contributions to actual charities. According to this WaPo article, they put about $3m in the foundation and gave $3m to charities in 2007. So out of the total $10m, only 50% has actually gone to charities. Anyone good with math want to calculate what $5m out of $109m is? I am pretty sure it doesn't reach Bill's own standard of 5% that he told everyone else to give in his book "Giving". Incidentally, I wonder where the proceeds of that book went. I would bet that all of it just went to the foundation and the Clintons gave nothing else.

Regarding Juano, I once saw him on Faux I believe and he was livid when someone said something fussy about Miss Hillary. His lips were actually trembling. I think she owns him and he likes it. Okay, that wasn't nice. An alternate interpretation of his obvious hatred of Obama flows from being too close to Hannity, who seems to think that going to a church that is unapologetically black is somehow much more egregious than going to a pub that is unapologetically Irish. Not that I'd mix religion with liquor but they do seem corrolated at least at the level of analytic rigor. Okay, that wasn't nice, either. But back to your wonderful post: CNN is reminding us over and over tonight how much the government (yes, Juano, the government like Rev. Wright says) was set on destroying MLK - the threats, the wiretapping and god knows what hasn't been declassified. There is so much for the Sunday morning talking heads to discuss...Mark Penn, the Clinton's taxes, the closing poll numbers in Pennsylvania, etc. So what can we expect? Maybe an hour dedicated to remembering MLK, Jr.'s assassination 40 years ago, with John McCain. Or maybe a half hour with Condoleeza Rice discussing passports and another half hour talking to Rep. Markey about the FAA. Heaven knows, we won't be talking about John Yoo's torture memos.
