Veepstakes: Romney Subs For Paul Harvey

10 Apr 2008 12:17 pm

Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney substituted for legendary radio newsman Paul Harvey today, ably reading copy on everything from the American Airlines wheel-well inspections to the economy to Madonna.

Harvey is recovering from pneumonia and is scheduled for cataract surgery, and his producers have been asking guests to take turns at the mike.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstom said the governor taped his segment this morning from WBZ's radio studio in Boston.

Harvey, who is syndicated by ABC Radio, has a weekly audience of more than 22 million, and can generally be found on the same station where Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talkers can also be heard.

And now you know . . . the rest of the story.

don't leave us hanging--what's "the rest of the story"?!

I heard him today. He was pretty good. I still like Paul better. Hope he is feeling better!

was great.

Mitt sounded great! It was so good to hear his voice again and hope we get to hear more from him in the VP role with McCain.
McCain/Romney in 2008!

Caught a snippet. Romney sounded good and stints like this will be very helpful in giving Romney some of the communications skills and ability to connect with a non-business audience that he DID need some work on.

Subbing for Paul Harvey is an honor, and doing well with an audience of 20 million helps Mitt out.

Time for him to write Paul a thank-you, saying he liked the chance to guest host, and if Paul thinks he did well - ANYTIME, he'd like to be back on...

Good move by Romney. For those of you who missed it. You can hear the show here: http://www.paulharvey.com/

Romney did well, but I've come to expect that from him, so you end measuring him compared to his past performances rather than compared to others. If you force yourself to compare him to others, he's IQ is probably 100 pts higher, and so are his oratory skills.

Romney wasn't too bad. He certainly was much better than Fred Thompson.

(The best thing about Fred running for president was that he gave up the Paul Harvey subbing.)

But Romney is no Gil Gross. Gil is still the best sub Paul Harvey ever had. And Ron Chapman is a very close second.

We all miss Paul. Now that we hear from Ron Chapman that Mr. Harvey's wife, Angel, has passed on, how can we be sure just when or if he will ever return to his first love, the microphone. Personally, I believe his best substitute has been his son, Paul Harvey Jr., and I'm hoping one of them captures back the mic soon. My sympathy to the Harvey family. ~ RFH

I miss Paul very much. I am glad to hear he is improving daily. Any answer to when he might return to the air.
