Yes, but we'll chuckle as we say it, for the first month or so -- then forget the joke. :-)
That is sickening and racist - as if "The White House" were just a place for white people.
Though I wish it wasn't true, the TX GOP convention was in Houston this year, not Dallas.
yes and we'll say, Obama is in da house. Sick.
I didn't think it was actually that bad, but if people find this offensive, there's an obvious rebuttal. "If McC wins, will we call the White House an Old Folks Home or a retirement village?"
Dave, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, and that is in no way as offensive.
Funny how everyone is buying this story sans, you know, evidence. Where is it? They do not sell those buttons on the website. There is no picture to be found of them selling it at the booth.
This is the sort of thing that McCain needs to denounce strongly.
It's not that its grand vizier levels of offensive so much that it just doesn't get it on so many levels. How would you explain the button to someone who asked the meaning? "Hee hee, see, the president has always been an old white guy, except Kennedy, he was a young white guy--and Catholic, too--and so when you say "white house" it's like you're talking about the old white guy house but Obama, see, he's a black guy!" "Huh."
These are the same people who told us that Bush was a "uniter and not a divider."
Any idea if this is sanctioned, or some bozo with a button maker was standing outside selling them.
Old people are funny!
This is exactly the kind of backward attitude that will get Obama elected. Change is good.
I saw a moron walking in Reston VA two weekends ago with a t-shirt that read "Liberalism breeds Terrorism." I found it kind of irritating but also kind of refreshing to find someone so comfortable pronouncing his ignorance so publicly. It's just nicer to be able to make fun of someone who so expressly deserves it.
they are republicans.
Attitudes like that should help the GOP plenty in reaching out and winning the Latino vote in Texas.
I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who may not believe it was raining if they were standing in a hurricane, but will believe anything they see on the internet.
Still waiting for actual proof.
Shouldn't that say "If Obama WERE president..." ?? Sheeesh...
Just curious if any of the people objecting so strenuously are black. If it were a Jew running and they said something like "If Schwartz gets elected vill ve eat gefilte fish at vat ve used to call The White House" I'd say they made a stupid joke (actually it's not a joke) and wonder what the big fuss is. I thought it was kind of ironic and almost funny when I saw it and 100 percent harmless. I think you guys need to lighten up a bit. FWIW, IANAL, my mother loves me, Murphy-willing, etc.
What's fascinating about these tactics isn't that they exist. We've known for decades that this is how Republicans exploit fear and bigotry. No, what's fascinating is that the mainstream media pretend that it's somehow just a small fringe who don't accurately reflect Karl Rove's party. Time to wake up. It's a lily-white party for a reason.
very funny. I didn't think it was called the white house anymore since the carpets got so very soiled by the current shit-kickers who inhabit the place.
If you see someone wearing that button, sneak up behind them and shout BOO! in their ear. They'll probably have a heart attack and die. One lest Republican to worry about. :-)
NO NO NO NO NO!!! Definately not!!! We'll call it "The White Crib". ...from the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans, er......um...ya, I can see we're gonna have lots of problems....
If a Texan is president...oh, wait, we know what happens.
If a Texan Republican is president...oh, wait, we know what happens.
This is from an independent vendor- NOT from an RNC-affiliated vendor. It is horrible and disgusting, but fully within the free speech rights we all have. Even worse- they sell a pin that says HRC Chicken Dinner Special- two fat thighs, two small breasts, left wing.
Let's build a giant fence around Texas so they can't let any more of their idiots leave. Not even close to funny.
Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean that it's NOT true. The Dallas Morning News website says "At the Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House." So, Gin, why should we assume that this is some sort of urban legend?
what would you expect from texas. for that matter from the republican party. the other poster is correct, its not just a once or twice thing. this is how this party in its core feels. if you are not white hetero and of the christian faith you do not belong here. the constitution and justice and equality mean nothing to these people. they are on the same level as hamas, al queda and other orginizations who terrorize in the name of their religion. no difference
Everyone in the media and the Grand OLD party seems to forget that Obama is just as much white as he is black. And, yes the button is stupid and bigoted. Just my $0.02 though...
I love it. Get it all out there for everyone to see. BUT, it's our job to refrain from the name-calling(racists pig, bigot, etc.). I fear if we start throwing around the "racist" word then it will put people on the defensive...people who may not want to vote for Obama becasue of his policies, not becasue of his race. Also, voters on the fence don't want to fear being branded a racist if they decide they might want to vote for McCain. If we start tossing that word around there will be a group of Obama supporters who will use it endlessly till November. I don't want any part of that kind of behavior. We are better than playing the victim and branding people racists. Let those people be who they are...the time is coming when their lot in this country will by minute and insignificant. Crap, for all we know maybe that time is now. Don't give them justification for fighting with us by giving them the opportunity to be a victim.
Lets change the name to the "Peoples House" and really get them going...
Yes. I am American, and I am black living in Dallas texas. First, the TX State convention was in Houston this past weekend. Second, not that this button is offensive but it is just in really poor taste. Creating and licensing a vendor to sell a button like this at a state party's convention stokes recial embers that I feel is wreckless. There were some parts of the state here that were only integrated less than 10 years ago. Can you say Vidor? But it is what it is, and it is always more than just black and white...I wish the knuckleheads in all races could mature enough to see that.
The Republican Party is marginalizing itself more by the minute....
Stay Classy GOP
I hope Barack calls it "his crib'
It's pretty crude and infantile as far as jokes go. But in light of Obama winning the Dem nomination running strongly as the "black candidate", (now he appears to becoming the "bi-racial candidate" with the black vote already in his pocket)it carries some grain of truth. Along with his association with Jeremiah Wright and the Trinity Christian Church, with it's stated dogma of loyalty to "Mother Africa" first and foremost. Certainly Obama is expected, by the overwhelming majority of the African American voters who put him in the position to be elected to the White House, to promote their cause and concerns above all else. Whether that proves to be the case remains to be seen, but the seeds of perception are planted.
Then again, my IQ is 14, so what would I know.
i'm black.
Every time I see something like this I'm so repulsed I end up giving money to the Obama campaign. The Republicans are gonna bleed me dry!
Scott - "HRC Chicken Dinner Special, two fat thighs, two small breasts, and left wing.". Yeah, but when one of those fat,red faced, cholestorol filled tipsy delegates with a glass of wine in one hand, a half eaten plate of deadly calories in the other, and a cigar hanging from their mouth, sees the button and is overcome with mirth, they either do a Tim Russert on the spot,or choke to death on the hor d'ourves they've been inhaling. Hillary has the last laugh.
"Liberalism breeds Terrorism." Where can I get that t-shirt. It's hilarious! Nearly as good as http://www.thoseshirts.com/pave.html for Colbert-ian humor!
The irony of this is that a black man is currently the front runner in the campaign for the presidency. Despite their best attempts to inculcate racism into the American psyche, they've failed! The statement is frankly, irrelevant.
What is racism good for if not for the jokes? I plan to vote for Obama with enthusiasm. The joke is silly, but who does it hurt? A joke of that sort is only hurtful if it's directed at a person or a group who is oppressed. If the guy is elected then he's obviously not oppressed and it's harmless.
Guess they haven't updated their website, or perhaps they have a "back-room" page that you can only get to if you can prove you are a bigot.
myeeehhh...Time to paint the house anyway. It must be a couple hundred years old.
I live in a rural, very conservative county in Texas and have a number of friends who were delegates to the Texas GOP Convention. All except one saw the vendor and the buttons being sold, along with a few other buttons that were of "questionable character." One of them asked the guy how many he'd sold and he didn't get a response. No one I know saw anyone wearing it, but you can bet your Democratic ass that a few people bought 'em and have 'em hanging around somewhere. So the story is legit...it was there. In fairness, the vast majority of Reps around here are honestly sickened that such trash made it to their convention. However, as I constantly remind them, the mere fact that the buttons were there and on display says more about the Texas GOP than any denunciation....no matter how public the denouncement. But what it ought to tell you is just how entrenched the state GOP establishment believes they are here in Texas. This only happens if someone believes they're not going to be held accountable....that they're "safe" from electoral recrimination. This button issue is one of numerous examples of how our state GOP has become a club of Grade A, Prime jackasses. We've got a S.Ct. justice who refuses to recuse himself despite taking "campaign money" (eg. bribe money) from a party that is presently before the Court, and another S.Ct. justice who was indicted for arson for burning down his own house only to have the indictment thrown out by the Republican D.A. of Harris county (Houston) less than 24 hrs. after it was handed down, and the D.A. himself was forced to resigned his own office 1 month later b/c he was caught up in a public corruption sting. Then you've got all the bullshit with Tom DeLay, TAB, redistricting, etc. I point that out for those who question the validity of this report....shit like this button is par for the course for this state's GOP. No one down here is surprised by this, and no one I know even questions whether or not it really happened. But it's crap like this that makes me want to beat holy hell out any and all pachyderms who defend or laugh at this bigotry. Sorry SOBs...
Hmm, interesting. We have ugly anti-Republican and Texan remarks, ageism, and just general hate coming from people who are upset about a hatefull button that they have no proof actually exists.
No kidding, William. What a bunch of drama queens. I attended the convention and did not see the button, though it may have been offered. Folks here buy the story hook, line, and stinker because it plays well with the Democrat narrative. Anyone who has been to a political convention realizes that imprimaters are not rquired, sought, or requested for merchandise offerred, and wide latitude is rightly given. The harrumphs registered in this space are overblown.
ugly?
by the way, that tired old republican tactic won't work with me, and most folks who are aware.
No, it's not 2008 .... it's just Texas! What can one expect from a bunch of social, political and intellectual throwbacks?
Uh, what's happening CC? To each his reach There's a lot of chocolate cities, around Gainin' on ya! Hey, CC! Hey, uh, we didn't get our forty acres and a mule Gainin' on ya! Yeah! Gettin' down Ah, blood to blood And when they come to march on ya Are you out there, CC? Yeah, get deep
Let's just take the high road, and move onto to more important things like issues and qualifications of the candidates. I'm not sure why we're wasting valuable time and mental anguish over a button that may or may not exist.
okay if someone had given me an assignment to dream up the most chilling emblem of our time (besides the cheney bush war/wealth machine), i wouldn't have been able to top this. whoever these people are, i truly truly truly don't understand them or their world.
Hey All: Please sign this petition and let the Texas GOP know what we think about their racist pin: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/322079918?z00m=15489513 Thanks!

Mark, the Texas GOP convention was in Houston, not Dallas. Both cities are likely to go overwhelmingly for Obama, although Texas will not.
goatchowder.....What you call your little number, "14% AND FALLING"? That's the percentage of the population that defines itself as "black" in the U.S. of A. You're "gainin" those inner cities because everyone else is leaving. They're used up and not fit to live in for the most part.
whaaaaaatever. sincerely,
Marc, have you been able to confirm this button story anywhere other than a blog? I don't doubt it for one minute, but I'm wondering if this is yet another case of the mainstream media passing on what should be talked about.
They make me want to vote for him just so they can find out.
there isn't anything complicated going on here. the button is just meant to encourage one to be a bigot. naturally, republicans eat it up. then, drama queens that repugs are, they cry victim that there is just too much hate on the thread. waaaaaaaaaa!!!!! of course, thats after denying it happened. but if it did, its no big deal apparently. what is a big deal? all the "hate" on this thread. this from the losers who try to own the term "pc".
"Just curious if any of the people objecting so strenuously are black." Doubtful. All the hallmarks of liberals engaged in faux outrage using a single tasteless button imagined by some political vendors as *proof* of the nefarious evil devious minds of Texas Republicans. The Texas truth would shock the Liberals: ALL THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STATEWIDE CANDIDATES IN TEXAS ARE REPUBLICANS. EVERY ELECTED STATEWIDE AFRICAN AMERICAN OFFICE HOLDER IN TEXAS HISTORY HAS BEEN REPUBLICAN. Republicans were and are the party of Lincoln, equal opportunity, and for civil rights. Never mind that this button, tasteless but maybe 1% as offensive as Rev Pfleger's Trinity church rant, was deservedly obscure until a journalist rescued it - nice going, publicize what you condemn, just like those TV news shows that condemn trashy women at Spring break and show just enough skin to be interesting about it an get ratings. The leftists have spent 8 years calling Bush ugly names, including calling him a chimp. If even 1% of the name-calling like that was used against Obama it too would be 'proof' of racism.
I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in Casablanca!
PJ just proves my point. he cant see that the button is racist. only "tasteless". as for black republicans in texas, i'll leave that to the wonder of future generations. I guess you must be right, finding racist republicans is just SO hard.
William Teach and Mark Rutledge: Is an admission by the Texas GOP proof enough? http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/061708dnpolobamapin.11d96bfd.html *** Texas Republicans cut off vendor that sold racist campaign pin 08:48 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 AUSTIN – The Republican Party of Texas is cutting off a vendor that sold a racist campaign pin at the state convention last weekend. “We were stunned,” said state GOP spokesman Hans Klingler. “That vendor will never be at another Republican convention again.” In a pavilion adjoining the convention hall in Houston, Republicanmarket.com was selling a pin that said, “If Obama is President…Will we still call it the White House?” The pin was noted in a blog post from The Dallas Morning News and picked up by national media Tuesday. Repeated phone calls to the vendor were not answered. Mr. Klingler said the party reviews vendors to assure they are reputable and sell quality items, but “we don’t have a chance to go by and look at the merchandise they’re selling,” he said. When he learned of the pin after the post on The News’ Trail Blazers blog this weekend, Mr. Klinger said, he spoke by phone with state party executive director Eric Opiela, who told Mr. Klingler that he would contact the vendor and inform them not to reapply for another state event. Calling the pin distasteful, Mr. Klingler said he was saddened to learn that it was being sold at a Republican Party convention. “After what we consider to be a pumped-up, unifying convention, it’s one of those things you hate to see,” he said. - thirty - ***
Will the "Dallas Morning News" be good enough proof for you, William Teach? http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/06/stick-a-pin-in-it.html "At the Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House." And PJ, your specious claim that (BTW, your Caps Lock key seems to be stuck here): EVERY ELECTED STATEWIDE AFRICAN AMERICAN OFFICE HOLDER IN TEXAS HISTORY HAS BEEN REPUBLICAN. Why, I would think that anyone from Texas would be familiar with the eloquence of Rep. Barbara Jordan - who alone proves you wrong. But you may be (but then again, maybe not) interested in more facts: "Following passage of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, registration of black voters increased to about 11.5% of the total population of voters. Between 1895 and 1967, no black person served as a state legislator. By 1993, however, there were 472 blacks holding elective office." http://www.city-data.com/states/Texas-Political-parties.html
Hi all, dhmlt on 6/18 called this issue "specious" and I agree. I encourage you not to give this or any of these negative efforts too much of your attention, but rather, keep your eyes focused on the goal. The nay-sayers are betting that Obama supporters will become mired in the negativity. Work instead toward being the best that you can be. Lift yourself up out of the muck and then turn to lift others up and we will win.
I am ashamed of being called a republican. They should ban this vendor. I have seen him at our convention, he is one rude and nasty guy. He is very racist. He looks the other way if you are other than white. He probably just wanted media attention.
