01 Sep 2008 05:43 pm

A new CBS News / New York Times poll gives Sen. Barack Obama an eight point lead over Sen. John McCain, with Obama rising on stronger numbers among men, women, Democrats and independence.

Women are voting for Obama by a margin of 14 points, and the two candidates are tied among men, an improvement for Obama. Although the findings are preliminary, the Palin pick seems to have had the greatest effect among men, with 17% of men saying they're more likely to pick McCain.
