The McCain campaign is sending strong hints that, unless the government bailout is substantially revised, McCain might lead Republican opposition to it in the Senate.
Last night, the campaign sent reporters a background e-mail previewing McCain's remarks today. McCain, in Scranton, PA this morning, said he was "deeply uncomfortable" that "so much power and money been concentrated in the hands of one person." "When we are talking about a trillion dollars of taxpayer money 'trust me' just isn't good enough," he said. A McCain adviser refused to rule-out any scenario, including a nay vote by McCain. "John McCain is interested in Main Street and the American worker. John McCain is interested in the American taxpayer. And those are the decision points for him as the package comes together. [At this point,] there is no package." |
