Ross Douthat proposes some here. Politically, it's an imponderable: how did it get to be that Democrat Barack Obama has worked more to associate himself with middle class tax cuts? (The only ads Nothern Virginia TV viewers see are about McCain's health care plan and its taxes, and Obama's middle class tax cuts.) Why didn't the McCain campaign, once it learned that Obama's tax cuts would help more middle class families, pull out a trump card? If McCain's agreed to spend hundreds of billions of dollars, why is he allergic to direct stimulus?
