Tough Ad One: Obama, North Carolina, "Mills."

08 Oct 2008 11:52 am

An American flag thread-making factory has its work outsourced to Asia...  And the Obama campaign wraps it into a tough commercial in North Carolina. The tag line: "McCain even said 'All Buy American Provisions Were 'Disgraceful'."

Is 'Tough' the adjective you are going to use when it's completely factually accurate?

Or just when it's an Obama ad?

Maverick he is not. NcCain has been repeatly exaggerating his Maverick label. Fact is McCain has consistenetly supported legislation that is bad for the American worker. Still today in the subtext of his proposals are consequences that will not be to a greater advantage for the worker. I have been out of work for the last 4 months and the only work I can find pays less than the unemplyment. I really need help and I really feel that I will have a better chance with Obama than McCain. That is why I am switching my vote. I can no longer worry about some of the accusations about Obama that may or may not be true. I am broke and my family need real help.

I don't like this ad, or the message it sends.

But silly season is upon us.

I like this ad. It reality. It shows the truth. Some don't like it. But the truth sometimes hurts. mccain lives in a fantasy where everything is dandy, and there are no economic woes. Just iraq. why don't we send mccain to take over general patreas so he'd shut is old trap up?

Send his dubmass supports there with him, since thats all they care about. DUmbass hicks.

John McCain doesn't hate America. He loves America. Really.

It's Americans that he hates.

I like this strategy myself, think national, punch locally.

Hopefully there's a few more state specific ones on the way.

That ad will work here in NC. No one will see it as extreme or distorted. Failed mills and outsourcing have been big issues here. If they don't get daily media play it's only because most of them are gone already.

There are a number of small towns in this state that have been bankrupted by the loss of their mill, typically the only major employer in that region. Medium and large cities have taken hits, too, but the small towns lack the funds and infrastructure to deal with the human aftermath of a mill closing. Metro regions like Raleigh, Charlote, Greensboro and Winston-Salem attract 21st century business, but the small towns can't.

This will work in North Carolina. Larry Kissell built his 2006 campaign against Robin Hayes using this same tactic and the very underfunded Kissell almost won. He is still using Hayes' votes on trade agreements against him. If this ad is shown in North Carolina's 8th District it will work against Robin Hayes without saying his name.

Good strategy in North Carolina.

If it didn't work they wouldn't do it, but I think Obama may live to regret his protectionist rhetoric. More than anything else, it's sleazy for Obama to attack McCain for voting against the farm bill. The farm bill is an evil that politicians indulge in when they want to win the Iowa caucuses. But there's no way Obama sincerely believes that subsidizing a narrow group of agribusiness conglomerates serves the broader national interest. Also, dumping artificially cheap agricultural commodities in third world countries keeps poor countries poor.

Hopefully Obama will drop this crap when he has to deal with trade from a position of responsibility.

I have been waiting for something like this.

The Air Force needs tanker planes and cargo planes and McCain wants the European company called AirBus to build them.

That means billions of our tax dollars would go to France to build up our military. That's unpatroitic and un-American.

Our tax dollars must go to support American companies and American workers, not to foreign countries like John McCain wants to do.

Hi ,

i feel no one can beet outsourcing....because it is cheap for companies to outsource work and do it in china or india........americans should understand that even obama cant stop it.....i love outsourcing...........i bet try changing it

try stoping outsourcing.......challenge

McCain called people at his Allentown rally as "my fellow prisoners".

D*mentia?

This ad is so relevant. I'm a market researcher for a commercial real estate company in Charlotte, NC and have done a lot of studies recently that cover areas from the NC mountains to the Carolina coast. So many plants/mills have shut down due to offshore outsourcing. One county lost 2,500 jobs - 5% of its workforce - when a single plant closed this summer. It's a disgrace.

On a separate note - I have a 1-year old, and I won't buy her any toys that have been imported, because I can't trust that the ones that we're getting from China instead of making here are safe. Yeah, way to save money for companies - who cares if kids get lead poisoning.

~Nancy (stepping down off of soap box now.)

If you people want to quote voting stances, please do your research and check Saint Obama's voting record in the Senate yourself, you might be suprised by what you find. Good luck spending your vast wealth of "CHANGE" if he does pull this off.

If outsourceing is sooo damn great, why do our congress people and senators have districts, would it not be better to be able to choose from canadates from all over the world! Including the upcoming pres election?

How is Obama supposed to keep jobs in America when he is raising the business taxes?

I love this new Obama commercial
just saw it today

send it to friends it sends the point home - YOU WILL AGREE good going guys

If the US has a "free trade" policy, then we will have the potential to lose jobs to countries that can make the product cheaper in dollar terms. Therefore, the US must force China to allow its currency to "float" against the dollar and Euro, in order to level the playing field. We can make textiles in North Carolina as good as any country, but the cheap Chinese currency prices them out of the market. Before "free trade", we would just slap an excise tax on imports that were deemed unfairly priced in this country. If China does not let its currency float, then I would be for import excise taxes!

This ad is such BS. Rising costs for healthcare and fuel were responsible in addition to outsourcing. The Dumocrats are just as responsible for the state of affairs our nation is in as the Ripublicans are. Once the politicians get to Washington they all start hurting the people that put them there. Neither Obama the socialist terrorist nor McCain the big business patsy will make any difference. But with Obama raising taxes you will see more of this, not less.

Are these the jobs Obama is fighting for....making thread? Please tell me that you haven't pinned the economic recovery of the US on....making thread.
